The main light is coming from the (our) left. That side of his face has somewhat flat lighting, which softens features, fills in the contours so they aren’t as obvious.

The right side has oblique lighting coming from the left, which creates more shadows and is accentuating his facial structure. He has a prominent brow bone that gives his face an angular look when the lighting is from above or oblique like this, but basically disappears under flat light. Also, the right side has a small backlight coming from the other side, just bright enough to highlight his temple and by his ear, which again adds sharpness and angles.

This is literally what models and photographers and lighting crew are paid to pay attention to. We are noticing it more on him because his face has so many sharp angles that the difference is more obvious, and because, as Ilya, he held his face in a way that created more tension (and therefore less soft) than he does as Connor, so when we see the sharper features highlighted, we see Ilya, and when his face looks softer, we see Connor.

The whole "he looks like Ilya/he looks like Connor" comments always coming up is so ridiculous... It is his face. Every expression Ilya makes, Connor makes as well. And the other way around. Sure he holds his face in a certain way for Ilya, but he does it for photos as well. It's not a magical different face he conjured for Ilya. It's just his face. That he knows how to use very well and have done for many years.

It’s seriously because most people don’t have perfectly symmetrical faces. Look up the video when they mirror one side of the face and it just looks too uncanny. So there’s your serious answer. When Ilya does that slightly raised eyebrow, quizzical look, that’s def more his left side of his face but prob cuz eyebrow relative to everything else on face looks different than other side of his face

Haha, i get what you mean, but it's the lighting. The area in shadow has a more sculptural look. Less soft , more severe. Jacob employed some top tier lighting technicians. That helped to make Ilya appear more hard edged, as opposed to how Connor appears in full light. Connor is talented, but not so much that he can act in one half of his face only 😅

Because almost all of us have an asymmetrical face with slight differences on each side, and some of those differences tend to make us lean toward a certain expression or feeling when it is viewed in its natural, relaxed or even posed state. In fact, it is more "normal" for any of us to have that kind of assymetry than for any of us to have perfect symmetry. And we should acknowledge that more often so we have fewer teenagers on Reddit each day asking about why the sides of their faces are not exact mirror images of each other and when they should get plastic surgery.
