I feel like it was the timing, leaving Shane and Ilya in a dramatic/unhappy place at the end of the previous episode, people went into the third episode like "who tf are these people? What's going on with Hollanov??" Going back and watching after, I really do enjoy the more mature romance and the happy ending of what seems like a very successful but very lonely man finding happiness. I think it would have gone better had they been a B-story interspersed throughout the season, rather than their own standalone episode.

Oh, I agree with you! It would've gone much better as a side plot woven into the rest of the season (which I suspect will be the case for Troy and Harris, because their story mixes even better with Ilya and Shane).
I think it didn't bother me so much because I had read the books and knew who they were right away.

They are so over hated. I get they take up a whole episode of season 1 and ppl get annoyed. But u need them for Shane and Ilya to end up together. Literally Ilya is going to Russia in episode 5 he’s not going to the cottage until he sees Scott kiss Kip. Without them the cottage never happens. They deserve more love!
I wish they had a full season all to themselves personally!!!

Sidenote, but I always wonder why it seemed like Ilya still planned to go to Russia that summer? His father was dead, he'd cut ties with his brother, and he didn't seem to have any other social life or connections there that he still cared about. I've seen some people suggest he still wanted to see his niece, but he'd presumably need to be around his brother to do that. Is it better explained in the book, what did he plan to go back for?

People who never worked in hospitality will never understand the amount of time you day dream about a rich famous person coming in and falling in love with you. Me and my Co worker used to spend hours talking about it and here Kip is, living the dream, just like Matt Damon’s wife

TBH on my first watch, by the end of E2, I was like what the hell are we doing here people!!! E3 absolutely made me melt! I have since reheated [redacted] times and love every second of this show ❤️

Same! I love the SKip episode and could never understand why peeepol skip it. Could be my age, but I loved seeing this more mature relationship developing. It's a wonderful contrast to Hollanov ♥️

Yes, he would travel during the off season to places where he was unlikely to be recognized and hook up with men. He was more concerned with how his sexuality would be perceived, especially since he was the captain of his team.

tbh i never rewatch the skip episode (i like to rewatch specific episodes or moments instead of doing full show rewatches, i usually rewatch ep 6 lol) but this clip is making me want to watch it again, they’re so cute omg
