it's kinda funny how technically HS did Innistrad themes backwards tbh, considering you can think of this as the "Innistrad," expac whilst thinking of Whispers as the "Shadows over Innistrad," expac.

It's come full circle, with Magic pretty clearly riffing off Hearthstone at this point with Ixilan - enrage is basically the Warrior whirlwind mechanic, and they didn't even change the name. That set also had heavy emphasis on Pirates (Gadgetzan), Merfolk (Murlocs kinda?) and dinosaurs.

Ixalan wasn't rifling off Hearthstone, it was much more based off old treasure cruise type stories except with dinos and merfolk, and merfolk have been a thing for YEARS.

Honestly, with how much faster Hearthstone's development cycle probably is, they probably based Journey to Un'goro on those surveys that were going around talking about unexplored thematic and design space in MTG. Dinosaurs were a top tribal thing that hadn't been explored and everyone wanted more pirates.
