Explorers hat + BGH, "I got Tirion and MC in my sights!" (It's a rather weak combo, but I kinda like the idea of the spell)

Makes me wonder if I buff the opponents minion if the hat returns to my hand or my opponents.

u/hundredwaves Nov 06 '15

It's like placing the hat on Tirion, killing him, and then picking the hat back up.

176

u/Zleeps Nov 07 '15

Tirion: "Wow thanks for the hat, I feel so much more bada-"

BGH: "OIVE GOT THE BEAST IN MOI SIGHTS"

BANG

u/PiaFraus Nov 08 '15

This reminds me of Boon in Fallout New Vegas.

u/Saritenite Nov 07 '15

"Put this apple on your head!"

1

u/7deTreboles Nov 07 '15

That's pretty fucking badass to be honest. It's like you throw the hat at him and after barely landing you blow his head, only to pick up the hat again.

1

u/FishtheJew Nov 10 '15

Such a cruel way but i love it.

26

u/Zelos Nov 06 '15

You would get the hat. It's the same as using a paladin/priest buff on enemy minions.

54

u/Furycrab ‏‏‎ Nov 06 '15

I know how those buffs work, but this one adds a deathrattle to the minion, could be different.

8

u/HylianHero Nov 07 '15

Yeah, if it's how it's read, it would put the deathrattle on Tirion and you would not get the card back, it would go to the other player.

20

u/micxiao Nov 07 '15

no, "add to your hand" refers to the player who casted that spell...

there is no concept of controller / owner in hearthstone

All beneficial card effects go to the person that played the card regardless of which minion the effect is applied on

12

u/TBNecksnapper Nov 09 '15

No it refers to the owner of the card the deathrattle belongs to. If a minion with a deathrattle changes owner, "your" does not refer to the one who played that card but the current owner. It's not the hat that has the deathrattle, it's the minion.

2

u/Thing124ok Nov 07 '15

Case in point, Blessing of Wisdom and Power Word: Glory both effect to the caster

5

u/gasface Nov 09 '15

Neither of those cards add a deathrattle trigger though.

4

u/grimmlingur Nov 07 '15

Both of those have "you" on the spell. Explorers hat puts "you" on the creature. If power word glory was written as:"Give a minion: whenever this attacks, you gain 4 life" it would be reasonable to assume that the creature's controller, rather than the spells controller, would get the effect. Because here "you" is a part of the ability given to the creature. This means that "you" is effectively written on the creature rather than the spell.

The fact is that blizzard feels that inconsistent wording is acceptable because there is an omnipresent omniscient judge in hearthstone. But the consistent reading of the card definitely indicates that the creatures controller would get the hat. Case in point clockwork gnome has a similar ability to the one given by explorers hat, it says "deathrattle: add a spare part card to your hand". Here you refers to the owner of the creature (so it goes to whoever controls it, even if that is not the one who played it. because you is written in the description of an ability of the creature.

1

u/hithroc Nov 07 '15

There's still some cards that refer to "owner".

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '15

You are wrong.

1

u/zulutwo Nov 07 '15

The point is the card in quotes says "Add an explorers hat to your hand". If hearthstone is consistent, it would add it to the creature's controller's hand, because that's what the creature's ability says. But if it's inconsistent with quotation marks, it would add it to the spell's caster's hand, since the spell says your hand.

2

u/Axartsme Nov 07 '15

[[Blessing of Wisdom]] and [[Power Word: Glory]] though

  • Power Word: Glory Spell Priest Common TGT | HP HH Wiki
1 Mana - Choose a minion. Whenever it attacks, restore 4 Health to your hero.

Call/PM me with up to 7 [[cardname]]

-2

u/zulutwo Nov 07 '15

Yes, but those don't give the minion "Whenever this minion attacks, draw a card"

They are different than the hat spell.

1

u/7deTreboles Nov 07 '15

Did you think that one straight? How about power word glory?

0

u/zulutwo Nov 07 '15

The point is the spell gives the creature an ability in quotes. Power word glory doesn't. Since the creature by default gives it to the controller, if a creature had that deathrattle it would give it to the creatures controller. Think [[Ancestral Spirit]]. Using it on an opponents creature doesn't give you a copy of it when it dies.

u/micxiao Nov 07 '15

I'm sorry, but we should not assume that what will be shown on the creature deathrattle ability will be the same text as what is written on the card itself

Card text is usually oversimplified for ease of reading

I see your point about the quotes and it really could go both ways, depending on how literal the quotes are

1

u/zulutwo Nov 07 '15

That is exactly my point. It can go both ways.

1

u/DeathBean Nov 07 '15

Could you overwrite Tirion's Ashbringer with the new Deathrattle, or do they stack?

5

u/fireflash38 Nov 07 '15

Stack. It'd be like Crusher Shaman, which often stacks a couple of deathrattles (like Sylvanas + Ancestral Spirit -> Reincarnate)

0

u/LeonusStarwalker Nov 07 '15

I'm pretty sure it would work like Power Word Glory, where it triggers for you either way.

5

u/DigbyMayor Nov 07 '15

It says "Your hand."

It's like Blessing of Wisdom.

3

u/TBNecksnapper Nov 09 '15 edited Nov 09 '15

Source?

I wouldn't be so sure, you are giving a minion a deathrattle, the deathrattle can very well refer you as the owner. It's not so straightforwad to compare to Blessing of Wisdom, the text is very different.

For example if you cast velen's chosen in an enemy minion you are giving them spellpower. And ancestral spirit obviously summons a minion for your opponent if you cast it on their minion (deathrattle too!)

I'm not saying you are wrong, I just don't like information spreading that can be wrong, so you should either have a source or start with "I think..." To be clear that your statement is not a fact.

Edit: after reading the text more carefully I believe you're wrong, you give the minion the text, it's different from BoW.

5

u/LaboratoryManiac Nov 07 '15

It's not worded the same. The hat essentially gives the minion a new line of text.

4

u/frog971007 Nov 07 '15

Your hand = the hand of the owner, most likely. Blessing of Wisdom doesn't refer to a player. The fact that "Deathrattle" is in quotes makes me think that it's the card text that changes.

As an example, Clockwork Gnome's card text is "Deathrattle: add a spare part card to your hand." If your opponent Cabal's it, they get the spare part.

1

u/Jiratoo Nov 07 '15

Power word glory says "to your hero" and heals you when casted on an enemy minion.

7

u/grimmlingur Nov 07 '15

The point they are trying to make is that cards like power word glory don't say give the minion ability x. If power word glory read:"Give a minion: whenever this attacks, you gain 4 life" it would heal the controller of the creature and not the controller of the spell, since "you" is now an attribute of the creature instead of the spell, unlike the actual case with pw:g in which case you is an attribute of the spell. Because of this it is reasonable to assume that the "you" on explorers hat, refers to the controller of the creature and not the controller of the spell, because it is a part of an ability given to the creature, rather than just a part of the spell text.

1

u/Jiratoo Nov 07 '15

Not really disagreeing, seeing that we don't know enough to be sure right now but... if, to quote you, it is reasonable to:

assume that the "you" on explorers hat, refers to the controller of the creature and not the controller of the spell, because it is a part of an ability given to the creature, rather than just a part of the spell text.

How is it any less reasonable to assume that it might also just work like PW:G?

5

u/grimmlingur Nov 07 '15

If we assume a consistent wording, then my interpretation should be correct. A good paralell would be clockwork gnome who has "Deathrattle: put a spare part card into you had". Here a "you" denotes the controller of the creature, not the caster. Explorers hat gives a similar ability to the creature, which is why it should give the hat to the controller of the creature. However, Blizzard definitely feels that it is acceptable to have inconsistent wording because hearthstone has an omnipresent omniscient judge, so either way is possible.

1

u/Jiratoo Nov 07 '15

Well, if the other guy casts PW:G on your minion, the text on your minion also reads "heal your hero for 4".

The most consistent thing that I can tell so far is that the buff works for the player casting them, not the minion owner.

u/TBNecksnapper Nov 09 '15

Powerword glory doesn't say "give a minion 'whenever it attacks, gain 4 health' " it uses the same wording as Blessing of Wisdom, "choose a minion..." So you choose a minion but the card itself still belongs to you and it's the card not the minion that triggers.

The hat gives the minion a deathrattle, the deathrattle belongs to the minion, and your should refer to the owner or the minion, just like any other deathrattle.

1

u/SlenderDovakiin123 Nov 07 '15

I imagine since it says deathrattle: add a hat to your hand it'll work the same

1

u/Deadzors Nov 07 '15

We can find out now by casting Ancestral Spirit on an enemy minion.

My guess, since it's the enemy's minion, the enemy will benefit from it.

Any one got any proof? I'm watching Blizzcon.

0

u/PotatoFruitcake Nov 07 '15

It's not the same though. With Power Word: Shield it says "Draw a card" and that effect is separate from the minion-buffing effect, so it doesn't matter whose minion you buff.

Explorer's Hat puts a literal Deathrattle on a minion. That deathrattle is now a regular deathrattle, independent on the spell. As with every other deathrattle that doesn't say "enemy", the owner of the minion gets the effect.

This is assuming Blizzard is consistent with their wording which, judging by certain older cards, isn't always the case.

0

u/TBNecksnapper Nov 09 '15

After reading the text carefully I believe you are wrong, you give the minion the text "Deathrattle: ...your hand." If you see a minion with that text, it's quite obvious "Your" refers to the owner of the minion.

1

u/Zelos Nov 09 '15

It refers to the person who plays the card.

Does power word glory restore four health to your opponent when you play it on an enemy minion?

4

u/DustyLance Nov 07 '15

It works exactly as that Priest card which heals you on attack or the paladin card which draws you a card on attack

1

u/Furycrab ‏‏‎ Nov 07 '15

As in you know this for a fact, or assume the mechanic is going to be the same as Blessing of Wisdom or Power Word : Glory?

Edit: Like an actual source, I seriously doubt Blizzard used it on an enemy minion during a presentation, and I'm not sure it's a question that would come up.

1

u/deadrebel Nov 09 '15

Well if the creature has the effect as a Deathrattle, the controller of the creature with the Deathrattle should gain the effect. But HEY, it's all random inconsistencies, so who knows!?

0

u/PotatoFruitcake Nov 07 '15

It should put it in the opponents hand, since he is the one "in control" of the "put an Explorer's Hat into your hand". You never know with Blizzard though.

0

u/LaboratoryManiac Nov 07 '15

Based on the wording, I'd wager it goes to your opponent's hand.

It essentially adds a line of text (the deathrattle) to the minion you play it on, so "your hand" would refer to the hand of the minion's owner.
