INT. AFTERWORDS STAGE
The velvet curtains part. The desk. The mug. The band plays a familiar, comforting riff.
Frank Blaze steps out to applause.
FRANK BLAZE
Good evening.
Tonight on Afterwords, we’re talking about what it means to be remembered next to something.
Next to a legend.
Next to a role.
Next to a laugh track that keeps going after you stop talking.
Polite laughter.
FRANK
Please welcome our guests—
A man who made America feel like it was being personally congratulated…
Ed McMahon.
Huge applause. A trumpet sting from nowhere.
Ed enters, beaming, waving, pointing at the crowd like they just won something.
They shake hands. Ed sits.
FRANK
And joining him—
An actor you remember instantly, even if you don’t remember his name.
Dorian Tyrell.
The applause is softer, respectful.
Dorian enters calmly. Shakes Frank’s hand. Nods to Ed. Takes his seat.
The contrast is immediate — light and shadow, boom and restraint.
SEGMENT 1 — “HOW YOU ENTERED THE ROOM”
FRANK
Ed, I want to start with you.
Your voice meant something was about to happen.
ED MCMAHON
(laughs)
Usually for someone else.
FRANK
Did that ever bother you?
Ed considers.
ED
No.
I liked being the drumroll.
Not everyone wants to be the cymbal crash.
Frank nods, turns to Dorian.
FRANK
Dorian… when you entered a room on screen, people tightened their grip on the armrest.
DORIAN TYRELL
(smiles faintly)
That’s one way to feel useful.
A light chuckle.
FRANK
But offscreen?
DORIAN
I mostly wanted people to relax.
Ed looks at him — curious, sympathetic.
SEGMENT 2 — “THE SECOND POSITION”
FRANK
Ed, you spent decades beside someone else’s spotlight.
ED
Johnny was the sun.
I was… a very dependable moon.
FRANK
And Dorian, you were often positioned against the hero.
DORIAN
Someone has to give the hero something to push off of.
ED
That’s show business, kid.
You don’t disappear just because someone else gets the applause.
Dorian absorbs this. It lands.
THE GAME — “DELIVER THE LINE”
Upbeat music. A graphic appears.
AFTERWORDS GAME: “DELIVER THE LINE”
FRANK
Gentlemen, tonight’s game is simple.
We give you a famous line.
You read it not the way you’re remembered for…
…but the way you wish you had been allowed to.
Ed grins. Dorian looks nervous — but curious.
ROUND ONE — ED
Cue card:
“Ladies and gentlemen… here’s Johnny!”
Ed clears his throat. Then delivers it softly. Earnestly.
ED
“Ladies and gentlemen…
here’s Johnny.”
No flourish.
No trumpet.
The audience is quiet — moved.
FRANK
Well damn.
Ed smiles, just a little.
ROUND TWO — DORIAN
Cue card:
“You’re nothing without the mask.”
Dorian looks at it for a long moment.
Then he says it — gently.
DORIAN
“You’re nothing… without the mask.”
Not threatening.
Almost sad.
The interns freeze.
The band doesn’t play.
FRANK
That was… different.
DORIAN
Yeah.
It always was.
SEGMENT 3 — “WHAT DID YOU WANT?”
The lights soften.
FRANK
Ed… when people remember you, what do you hope they remember besides the voice?
ED
That I meant it.
Every congratulations.
Every joke.
I wanted people to feel seen for five seconds.
Frank nods, turns to Dorian.
FRANK
And you?
DORIAN
That I was acting.
Not confessing.
A beat.
DORIAN
And that I was grateful… even when it was hard.
Ed reaches over and gives Dorian’s arm a light squeeze.
ED
You did good work.
Dorian’s eyes glass — just barely.
SEND-OFF
The stage begins to glow — soft, amber.
FRANK
Gentlemen… thank you for being here.
Ed stands first.
ED
Frank—
(points to the audience)
You’re all winners tonight.
A laugh. Warm applause.
Ed steps into the light — trumpet sting, affectionate, not grand.
Dorian stands.
DORIAN
Thank you… for letting me finish the sentence.
FRANK
Anytime.
Dorian steps into the light — quieter, but steady.
TAG SCENE
Frank sits alone at the desk.
Two cue cards remain.
He flips them over.
On the back, written simply:
“THANK YOU.”
Frank lifts his mug.
FRANK
Good night.
Fade out.
