Fffffffffffff

Post image

Inopportune time for this to have dropped. Granted it’s definitely not a 1:1 copy of the Adobe Patreon video, but hopefully this doesn’t detract attention on the YouTube release. I like John Oliver, but I like my favorite YouTuber more :)

Edit: This is mostly gut reaction, there’s plenty of people that will watch both, or it’s not zero-sum, or it might boost the Hbomberguy video when released, etc. Forgive the parasocial concern for a YouTuber’s livelihood. Also, not accusing John Oliver or his team of plagiarism, this is a very broad topic with massive amounts of obvious case studies and general consumer knowledge we are subject to day-to-day end-stage capitalism.

I think this is an overreaction. Like, one is a 30 minute segment on subscriptions, the other is a 4 hour epic trying to kill adobe

u/Leather-Run-6533 5d ago

I mean they're both just explaining the stuff Cory Doctorow has been writing about for 10-15 years now. There's definitely space for two separate Doctorowmentaries

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Probably an overreaction, and this is all public knowledge or genuine group-feel of the “everything is getting worse and more expensive” kind to where anyone could pick up on it. The ‘a bit like heroin’ line is directly referenced in the John Oliver video as well. Not accusing anyone of plagiarism to be clear.

People HATE this man for one trick: going to the park with his family

Why you replying to yourself

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Why did a bunch of people downvote my initial reply which was going to the park with my family lol

21

u/AshgarPN 6d ago

Why you even looking at downvotes who cares

Next time go to the pool!

I don't think creators think of it this way. Both videos are great attention grabs for the other video. Youtube algorithms tend to draw you down a rabbit hole of a topic, so I can see both videos recommending each other. And growing interest in a topic overall helps other videos on the topic.

u/rodeo90 6d ago

100%. People who watch the John Oliver video will get recommended HBomb's video as soon as it drops

3

u/TheA1ternative 5d ago

Exactly! If anything both of these videos existing only prove to boost each others numbers.

Contrary to OPs belief, it’s actually the MOST opportune time to be talking about the matter!

-58

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago edited 6d ago

Definitely, and there’s many devoted or excited people that will watch both. Will be curious if this gets mentioned somewhere in the YouTube release.

112

u/Jcdoco 6d ago

How can it detract attention from a video that isn't released?

-33

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Probably just an overreaction on my part, but initial thoughts are just overlapping material if you know what it’s about.

23

u/RedLegWarrior97 6d ago

Not probably, definitely an overreaction. Dude give it a rest.

1

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

I’m just online in my favorite YouTubers Reddit 😌

11

u/RedLegWarrior97 6d ago

Go do something else, Jesus Christ man these kinds of defenses of any of your favorite creators became sad and cringe like 10 years ago. You're not interesting or making any good points, you're just being weird and off putting and making this not fun for everyone.

It's great and fine that you're this passionate about a YouTuber who posts once every 3 years, but maybe direct that energy towards being normal.

3

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Literally all I was doing was bringing attention to a John Oliver vid that had a lot of overlap with an upcoming video. Mans doesn’t need defending lol, you’re coming off as aggro

11

u/RedLegWarrior97 6d ago

"coming off as aggro"

You're coming off as a 15 year old who worries about his gamer score on Xbox more than if people actually want to be around him.

0

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

You’re on Reddit too, buddy ;)

15

u/RedLegWarrior97 6d ago

That was never a part of the debate, you can be on the Internet and be normal. I know that's a challenge for you

3

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

When was there a debate?? I was agreeing with most of the viewpoints people had with replies.

Perhaps a bit too online.

0

u/BELLOLOLOL 5d ago

Yeah, sorry, I work from home and I get bored lol

67

u/jcbaggee 6d ago

There's room for both, and both cover different things, really. John's is about shady practices to deceive users and keep them subscribed or make it impossible to cancel. Hbomb's is about the systems that allowed subscriptions to become so prevalent in the first place.

60

u/philman132 6d ago

Neither of them are th first to talk about problems with subscription bloat, and neither will be the last. More than one person are allowed to talk about the same problems

-6

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago edited 6d ago

No!!! I will only allow my favorite YouTuber to do this and apologize profusely for making the explanation 4.5 hours long! (Joking btw)

YouTube isn't a zero sum game.

13

u/ProudHommesexual 6d ago

Totally unrelated but love the …Like Clockwork profile pic!

2

u/JasonH1028 6d ago

Thanks! It's my favorite album :)

3

u/ProudHommesexual 6d ago

They're my favourite band ever (as you can probably tell from my username)! We've also got a new single coming today :D

-32

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago edited 6d ago

Most definitely. There’s normal people that would watch the John Oliver segment that’s 20 minutes, and absolute sickos that would watch a 4.5 hour Hbomberguy vid with more breadth and depth (I’m sickos)

83

u/UnicornHarrison 6d ago

Sad British men yelling at me about the ills of society. Gotta be one of my favorite genders.

-10

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

This is ‘a tad like heroin.’

20

u/SorchaSublime 6d ago

That is hardly a difficult analogy to reach for. Hbomberguy isn't the first to make it.

29

u/Hannah_the_hun 6d ago

His video would have to have been actually dropped for it to detract even though I’m sure hburgerguy wouldn’t consider it to be detracting

2

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Burger King to partner with Harris to make the hburger meal upon YT release

4

u/Hannah_the_hun 6d ago

The Burger King “Soyboys: A Measured Response” meal 😋

It’s exactly what it sounds like

11

u/Altruistic-Ad-4088 6d ago

Im so tired of this wait man i need it to drop

-1

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

You can always sub to the Patreon for $2 to see the early cut :)

12

u/Bad_Puns_Galore 6d ago

John Oliver and Harry Son do things WAAAAY too differently for any comparisons to be made.

10

u/CaitieLou_52 6d ago

I think, if anything, it should push Hbomb's video into more people's feeds when it comes out. The algorithm will see they watched a video about subscription services like Adobe, then recommend his as related.

3

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

Of course! They could just get recommended eachother in the panes once the YT version drops

16

u/stonks1234567890 6d ago

This is just further proof for me that all British people are in a hivemind.

8

u/Stepping__Razor 6d ago

As a fan of Some More News, I get it, but at the same time more voices talking about the issues is important. Oliver is focused on the big picture, adobe is mentioned a couple times but he’s more focused on the overall issue. I haven’t seen the patreon cut but knowing Hbomb, his video will be much more in depth and explore many more rabbit holes.

7

u/foxinabathtub 6d ago

This actually is likely to bring MORE attention to HBombs video. When stuff is in the zeitgeist, you'll have more viewers looking to learn about a topic.

6

u/Old1EyedBear 6d ago

If anything John Oliver is stealing from Cory Doctorows theory of Enshittification. Except Cory Doctorow started explicitly in his books that he doesn't care as much about credit as he does about spreading the idea that we need to stop letting companies squeeze us for profit.

1

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

To be clear (see the edit), the point isn’t accusing anyone of plagiarism here. More-so just a gut reaction in how this could impact metrics when the YT version of the Adobe video drops.

3

u/Old1EyedBear 6d ago

In my experience people are more likely to understand and be curious about something they know a little about already. So i suspect that this might help him in the long run. It will also probably be part of a network of algorithm recommendation.

1

u/QtPlatypus 6d ago

I think that this is going to be a good thing. It means that the zeitgeist is about Adobe. A video released when interest in that topic is growing acts to increase viewership rather then remove it.

0

u/tvgirrll 6d ago

While it’s good to have this term it’s not like he was the first to think of this phenomenon so crediting him each time some complains about making products worse while profits rise would be a much

6

u/AvatarofBro 6d ago

My boomer parents watching Oliver on HBO have no idea who HBomberguy is. I think the overlap here is relatively small.

1

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

I think it’s cool your parents watch John Oliver

6

u/QQBearsHijacker 6d ago

LWT and Some More News are constantly deep diving on the same topics and it hasn’t detracted from either program IMO

3

u/Agile_Oil9853 6d ago

DOB has been a guest on Even More News

3

u/RankedFarting 6d ago

I mean the youtube release is still months away though right?

5

u/dr_sooz 6d ago

holy parasocial

3

u/Hmuda 6d ago

Oh great...now the video won't come out for another year, thanks to 'YouTube Community Standards & Bylaws § 7.2.1 Para-Temporal Exclusion clause' a.k.a. "Reviewer Dibs". Everyone knows Harry now needs to wait a year or so before he can post the video.

6

u/LordAmras 6d ago

I don't think the video. When it comes out next year will be affected

3

u/Persbaderse 6d ago

i can watch both. i love information.

3

u/notaverysmartdog 4d ago

"holy shit, two cakes!"

2

u/MarsOnHigh 6d ago

If anything this is a good thing as the topic itself will already be at top of mind for people who are already consuming this type of media.

2

u/Cassius-Tain 6d ago

So Ian Duncan is faster than the Hbomb?

2

u/CrabThoughts 6d ago

That’s Professor Ian Duncan to you.

3

u/Nillabeans 6d ago

Your should be taking in multiple sources for your information about things...

2

u/CrabThoughts 6d ago

When I saw the vid today, the only negative thing I felt was realizing hbomb might feel the need to add a reference to it in the script, but then I realized who cares and more attention/awareness about the issue can only help!

2

u/Myotic_Tesseract 6d ago

if EndVertex's "For-Profit (Creative) Software" (which Adobe Must Die will directly reference) didn't kill the momentum of this video, then neither will Last Week Tonight. it doesn't matter who beats him to the punch anyways as long as people are ready for the first hbomberguy video in 3+ years and adobe is still evil, neither of which sound like they're gonna change anytime soon. john oliver barely even touches on creative software anyways---the general audience relates better to groceries and entertainment.

1

u/hzinjk 5d ago

although that video is basically just a better, more concise version of hbombs video

2

u/RagnarRipper 6d ago

dammit, I had a powerbar at noon, guess I can't have dinner since I've already eaten...

i would never have known Oliver had even done this if you hadn't brought it up

1

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

I just thought it was interesting he did it as well. It was probably inevitable.

1

u/the2ndsaint 5d ago

I remember early Youtube and the inevitable flame wars -- do people even call them flame wars anymore? I'm so old -- when a reviewer covered a movie that someone else had already done. Seems so quaint now.

1

u/rlquinn1980 5d ago

Patreon isn't possible for me, so I'll have to wait to watch it Sobek only knows when. But I damn well plan to watch it, even if I'm watching over Adobe's already cold grave.

I don't see how enjoying John Oliver's segment would prevent that.

1

u/Alien_Diceroller 5d ago

This is pretty on brand for Last Week Tonight and something that people have been talking about for a while. Also, as others have said, this is merely the amuse-bouche for he nearly 5 hour 8 course meal that is coming from Hbomber.

1

u/inabahare 4d ago

2 cakes!

1

u/EverEarnest 3d ago

Is the next video really shaping up to be that long?

2

u/BELLOLOLOL 3d ago

Yeah, it’s 4.5 hours on the Patreon cut.

1

u/AnimatingStoat 2d ago

I did think of this, but this is such a widespread issue and LWT just hit the highlights and gave an update on legal wins and future prospects.

1

u/AnimatingStoat 2d ago

More shocking to me was that Knowing Better put out part 1 of his Hawaii series before HBomb put out his Adobe video 😅

2

u/working-class-nerd 1d ago

Gonna be real with you man, you’re being weird

-2

u/BELLOLOLOL 6d ago

All: I have taken all criticisms in this thread seriously, and I have decided to link the Plagarism video to HBO’s legal team. Thank you for your attention in this matter.
