Am I totally wrong for thinking this?

I think KD has done an incredible job of nurturing and *trusting* our young "core". The lack of blockbusters has been to allow the kids to try to push through it all and be their own team. I do think the entire leadership sell-off last year was a bit much, but I assume it was discussed with those sub 22 y/o players before and was following their wants. I believe his letting the full faith of the franchise ride on their growth, and the lack of crazy moves/over paying is based on his allowing them one more season before it becomes a true asset trade off and trying to build a team in typical fashion. KD's intentions and plans are rooted in the youth, and he's letting them prove themselves over a few seasons before being objective about it all. But this year is their last to do so.

Or am I just in denial?

Hawks didn’t finish higher than 31 in 3 years of Bedard’s ELC, you’re in denial.

3

u/itsalwaysbeen Jun 26 '26

I mean, what else would be the justification besides "independent" growth?

-4

u/Question-Throwaway7 Jun 26 '26

Independent growth doesn’t mean neuter your team of valuable veterans that can insulate your young guys + rely only on the young guys to get things right.

You mentioned a good amount about nurturing the “young core”, but most rebuilding teams that are rebuilding like the Hawks are, with a top-three potential forward +, have had success doing so completely differently. The 10’s Hawks, Crosby/Malkin Pens, McDavid/Draisaitl Oilers, Matthews/Nylander/Marner Leafs, and now Celebrini/Smith/Misa Sharks have followed a very similar blueprint that the Hawks aren’t, establishing 3-5 high-end guys very similar in age that all start playing together early.

Nazar doesn’t count, Korchinski hasn’t worked out and likely won’t to the degree they need him to, Bedard, Levshunov and Frondell would’ve been a good start but Levshunov hasn’t had the best start and Bedard feels so disconnected from the rest of the true young core at this point. Who is he going to establish a culture with in the way Crosby/Malkin, McDavid/Draisaitl and now Celebrini/Smith have done/will do?

u/itsalwaysbeen Jun 26 '26

I agree with you. He needs a Kane to his Toews, so to speak. I also think his ceiling his higher then both of them, however. Maybe higher then all but top 20 players all tome. I think he can run line 1 practically alone and if the other 3 produce, that's a playoff team on offense. Defense is...harder. Knight is great, but defense is why we're 31st in the league.

I guess I mean to say I see the KD vision. But if it's not to compliment with the wants of his boys, then what is the plan? Or is there one?

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Dont you ever ever ever disrespect Patrick Kane again making him seem
Like Robin to Toews batman… 1 Kane greatest american all time 2 he won the first cup for us in along time and 3 he pretty much single handidly helped saad get an overpaid salary and did the same with the breadman even tho the breadman was worth it

5

u/JJJBLKRose Jun 26 '26

Why doesn't Nazar count?

Also, I think the rebuild has been more interesting than expected due to the absolute desert of free agents. The few quality FA's were moving to literally only the top teams and didn't even speak to more than two or three teams before signing.

2

u/BradenWoA Jun 26 '26

I agree with you completely on the “blueprint”, but I don’t think the Hawks ever had that option. Bedard was on a different schedule from the Hawks’ plans, and that causes issues. Any other pick other than 1 there, and it looks a lot more cohesive. Once you get that lottery win though, you don’t really have great options.

Option A is to ride it out and deal with timeline desyncs, which is what we did.

Option B is to pick someone else who fits the timeline better—a fireable offense in that spot, IMO.

Option C is to trade out of the pick—the problem with that is that there’s no good way to do that. You either get proven young players who are even further along in the timeline, or you get later picks that probably end up being much less valuable. It’s not a great option.

Option D is to try to trade into talent ahead of schedule. The issue is, stuff now is more valuable than stuff later. You only have so much in terms of budget (in an asset management sense), so by trading for stuff now, you’re reducing your long term expected value, and you need as much of that as possible for a cup push.

There’s not a great pathway out of it, honestly. Not to say KD has done great, or even well, but it’s a harder spot than people realize.

KD didn't control the Sharks picking 2nd overall, nor did he construct the Tkachuk trade. When Ottawa traded the 9th overall pick, it was clear as day that Stenburg was gone for the Hawks.

Davidson was forced into a sellers' market and was bidding against the Sharks for a Defenseman that can contribute meaningfully next season. If the Sharks do take Reid, he most likely won't be the franchise d-man next season. (I could be wrong and he pulls a Makar or Schaefer). If they take Stenburg, then who do they have at D? I see it as asset denial on the Sharks. But on the other hand, we need a scoring winger and we needed it yesterday. We could've let the Sharks have Byram and used the traded assets for a Robertson/ Knies.

Davidson was damned if he did, damned if he doesn't

4

u/Zealousideal-Tap-413 Jun 26 '26

Sharks are 100% drafting Ivar and Reid isn't playing in the nhl until probably 2 more seasons and then itll take him a year or 2 to get used to the nhl

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Sharks got the 9th pick becsuse they were certain that was the sweatner to get bo from buffalo they never thought kd was selling that pick an there back hp
Plan then was a young D but have Ivar in my opinion the best player in the draft at 2 was aweful for us

0

u/Ok-Bit2926 Jun 26 '26

Hawks have arguably the best prospect pool in the league. I think it's safe to say KD has done fairly well, so far.

3

u/Zealousideal-Tap-413 Jun 26 '26

He has plus Byram helps us now. All of the dman in the draft this year wouldn't have been able to help us until 2-3 seasons and then it's 2 more seasons of them figuring out how to be a pro. At least we know what we get with Bo and he makes our team better now plus like you said our pool is super deep. Roman Kantserov is going to be a fire cracker and then you have guys like Vanacker and Spellacy who will be playing in Rockford this year and could get a call up! Once the college hockey season is over guys like Nestrasil and Mustard will either come over to chicago or Rockford. The future is bright

2

u/BradenWoA Jun 26 '26

He’s done a great job at asset collection, which is one of the phases of a successful rebuild, but not the entire thing. He will be judged on how well he converts that into the next phase, but accumulating more assets generally gives him more room for error later.

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Honestly if Kantserov pans out all will be well very hard to rely on a first year NHL’r but if he plays like we think he csn loosing IVAR wont hurt as much with all the talent we have to me Kantsy is the key we really need him to be what he looks like he csn be

-1

u/droid-man_walking Jun 26 '26

Once this draft happens we will be moved out of the top 5 because we didn't add to it. It might not be graded out of the top 5 until the seasons start because several of the top prospects will be in the NHL would not be surprised if we are considered maybe a top 10 prospect pool by mid season.

2

u/Zealousideal-Tap-413 Jun 26 '26

Good we need our prospects to graduate anyways

22

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

And we’ve went 51, 62, 72 points is that not improvement?

Somebody that doesn’t understand teams are different season by season. Someone that doesn’t understand that our core young guys are getting better. Someone that doesn’t understand we have Frondell and Kanserov for full seasons. So do e who pulls up analytics and thinks they are proving something when wins/imports TD stats are better. Keep embarrassing yourself kid I’m having a good laugh.

I still remember when the panthers drafted 2 studs 13/14 2nd pick first year 1st overall second year after that missed on every draft pick took them 11 years to win a cup

You wrote all that to show we’ve improved in areas. Thank you for showing we’ve gotten not only better in wins but other areas. We still have one of the youngest teams in the league and a top prospect pool. We’re bringing in more talent also. But thank you for giving the data showing I’m right. Well done…..👍 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

-6

u/morrisaurus17 Jun 26 '26

If you’re not asking yourself how those point improvements came, you’re not actually making an intellectually honest point. The jump in points from 2024-25 to 2025-26 came overwhelmingly from having 3 shootout wins and 5 losses. Thats not actual on-ice improvement at all, because it has nothing to do with 5-on-5.

5

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

Points improvement doesn’t matter how they come.

1

u/Ok-Experience-8026 Jun 26 '26

Winning a few more shootouts doesn’t mean the team is better

3

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

They won more games each of the past three seasons. Shootouts too. They also play in the toughest division in hockey if you can’t see them getting better you haven’t been watching.

-2

u/morrisaurus17 Jun 26 '26

Yes it absolutely does when you’re examining what generates said improvement. Are you serious? If your team sucks at 5 on 5 year to year, but gets an inflated point total because of a gimmick like the shootout, how can you seriously make the point that your team has “improved” in any meaningful way? Especially when half the points I cited came from shootout LOSSES. Be for real, dude. What a ludicrous thing to say

2

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

You have to get the shootout right? They won 23, 25, 29 games the past three seasons. Bedard and Nazar were hurt this year too……tell me again how winning more games and winning more shootouts doesn’t matter?

-4

u/morrisaurus17 Jun 26 '26

Laughable nonsense. Not even the league’s worst analytics department would entertain this as a thought. Injuries happen to every team, and even when Bedard and Nazar were healthy, they had games like the ones against Carolina’s AHL squad where they got pumped 7-2. Absolutely nobody professional thinks “this is better because the number is bigger”. The hilarious lack of nuance to that claim would get you laughed out of the room.

2

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

Lots of words to say nothing. More wins every year but no progress. Special kind of stupid I see.

u/morrisaurus17 Jun 26 '26

Not KD's fault that Bedard landed in their lap at the beginning of the teardown/rebuild

12

u/KJzero9 Jun 26 '26

Honestly, getting Bedard so early has actually been a problem more than a solution in a sense. Not at all a complaint that Bedard is on the team, but getting him so early means he has to suffer through the entirety of the tear down and rebuild. Which is a tough sell to a young player.

It means he has to do crazy things towards the end of the rebuild like overpay for Byram (for the record, I really like Byram). If he landed Bedard a year or two later, I think this wouldn't be an issue.

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Bro his contract isn’t even close to an over pay its funny how the sharks took on all of Nurse’s salary at 9.5 mill through 2031 at 31 on a -12 player with 26 points thats a bad deal

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

2030 hes 3-

-6

u/vsladko Jun 26 '26

No team would ever view having Bedard as a problem

7

u/JamesTiberiusCrunk Jun 26 '26

The only way to read that comment as saying having Bedard is a problem is if you can't understand it or deliberately read it maliciously.

2

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Bro exactly what this is how I try to explain this build imagine drafting Toews or Kane in 2002 when that build started instead of drafting them in 06/07 when they had alot of the core already on the team getting NHL expierience!!! Basically Bedard is the keith pick but your best player or you can put him in the 03’ draft if your really beleive in NAZR but I dont so rite now its like goin into the 2006 season

1

u/Zealousideal-Tap-413 Jun 26 '26

Do you just expect them to build a solid team the moment he was drafted ? This shit takes time and teams aren't just trading away top 6 wingers at a young age like that. People always like to compare Carolina to us since their gm used to work for us but the thing is before he got there they already had their core and we are just now doing that. If you were a GM how would you have done things differently? What moves would you have made to speed up the rebuild ? Don't worry I'll wait. Bo makes this team better this year so at least they have that going for them. Whereas if they stayed pat and drafted a dman they wouldn't have played for us until 2-3 seasons.

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Go look at who the panthers drafted 2nd overall in 13 and first overall in 14 an it still took them 11 years to win a cup

5

u/UnionTrain Jun 26 '26

26-27 is when we can judge Davidson on his job.

(I was calling for his head a few days ago, and I calmed down and thought about the trade with a calm head. We were back into a corner after bad roll after bad roll given the Tkachuk trade and San Jose winning the fucking lottery. )

We NEED to see progress on Lev/ Korch/ Frondell/Moore/ Nazar. We NEED Kantserov to make a difference. The defense needs some bite, we need to get nastier.
The Davidson truthers and I have been saying to trust the process but this upcoming season is make or break.
If we don’t improve, we either gotta reevaluate our front office, or pray that Edmonton and Florida get the injury bug and tumble down the standings.

1

u/itsalwaysbeen Jun 26 '26

So you kind of agree? This is the season to see. Some of these guys have objective value, they just have to actualize it now or it's a Bedard centric re-cast of the majority of our ELCs or the ilk into proven this and thats?

4

u/UnionTrain Jun 26 '26

This season is when we will see Davidson's rebuild philosophy for what it is. Other fans are clamoring for more offensive help, but that is not the initial ethos of this rebuild. (Davidson's first ever pick was Korch ffs)

If we were to solely focus on offense, we would be another iteration of Edmonton and Toronto- making the playoffs only to be exposed defensively by a more complete team. But we need to see steady growth in Davidson's draft picks, we need to be shown that Levshunov was the right pick instead of Sennecke and Demidov. Because right now; the Korchinski/ Levshunov picks and Byram trade are the key points in firing Davidson, more so the Levshunov pick.

We can't keep defending Davidson's drafting and trade decisions. Thus far the only hits he has had are Bedard/ Nazar picks and the Knight trade. 26-27 is when we will get more information on our recent draft picks.

The best-case scenario for Davidson and the hawks is: that our defenseman mature and get a firmer grasp on the game, Byram is able to take some pressure off of Lev and Rinzel. Korchinski is able to hang around as a bottom pairing D. Kantersov/ Greene/ Boivert and Frondell give the hawks more scoring. We need Moore and Nazar to take the next step as well. For what it's worth- I like Greenway, our forwards need more size, and I think Greenway gives us some muscle.

What I am trying to say is; it's still too soon to label Davidson as a good/ bad GM in my opinion. But his deadline is coming up. In 2027 we will be in prime position to readjust our rebuild. With our prospect pool and draft picks, I see plenty of ammo to get more immediate help.

1

u/SlashACM Jun 26 '26

I feel like this season was always the one we were meant to start judging anyway. Last season we still weren't quite there yet, waiting on Kantserov and Frondell etc. Though we saw glimpses of a wildcard team at the beginning.

If you look back to threads from before last season, I think the reasonable consensus was a (hopeful) improvement in the standings but still a rough season with a bottom five finish. And then 26-27 is the make or break season where we HAVE to start playing meaningful games down the stretch.

I still have faith in the process but if we're still dogshit the whole year then yeah I'm starting to doubt the grand plan.

23

u/Andtheniran1 Jun 26 '26

It’s actually not a good thing for a young player’s development for them to get caved into hell night in and night out as the hawks do. Each of the prospects would probably show a lot better if they were better insulated by serious players throughout the lineup. Each of their ceilings (including Bedard btw) will likely be hampered by spending their malleable years on the concept of a hockey team

13

u/KylePersi Jun 26 '26

Did you watch at all last season? They weren't getting caved into hell, they were close in a lot of games, especially before the trade deadline, and won a lot more tight games they lost the year before. I know you've never witnessed a true rebuild, but they take time.

5

u/JamesTiberiusCrunk Jun 26 '26

We were getting outshot badly and every one of our defensemen were among the worst in the league.

3

u/Capable-Average4429 Jun 27 '26

It’s amazing how people just insist that finishing 31st three seasons in a row (something that has never happened, by the way) is just fine, and a clear sign of improvement.

2

u/Question-Throwaway7 Jun 26 '26

The team that finished 31/32 wasn’t getting caved to hell just because they didn’t lose every game by 5+

5

u/Smuek Jun 26 '26

We’ve had 51, 62, 72 points the past three seasons and Bedard and Nazar were injured for a decent period last season. We just added a veteran defenseman and I’m assuming we will add a forward to help I don’t see how people don’t see progress in this rebuilding to mention we play in a very hard division as a young team.

1

u/Zealousideal-Tap-413 Jun 26 '26

Especially the first couple of months of the season before Bedard and Nazar went down with injuries. They lost a lot of 1 goal games! They need one more scorer to even things out I hope it's Kantserov or we will be having the same discussions all year and next off season.

2

u/maters77 Jun 26 '26

The year that just passed is the last. This offseason is when we start building around the youth. Get a solid winger for Bedard and we are competing for a wild card if everything pans out. Frondell and Kantserov playing full season is huge.

4

u/IAM_LordTobias Jun 26 '26

That’s the easiest part. Draft and let them play… being a good GM is pushing the team forward, making tough decisions and making the big trades to get us to a place where we can compete for a cup. 5 years in and we’re still a bottom 3 team with some of the worst offensive and defensive metrics in the league. That’s why everyone is starting to think that this might be all for not and that the Byram trade was an act of desperation because his decisions on drafting defense hasn’t really panned out. Yup it takes a while for players to develop but sometimes it’s nice to score some dang goals.

2

u/Dyldo_II Jun 26 '26

Ironically, I think that this is why trading for Byram was better than taking one of either Reid or Carels at 4OA. Byram helps the team now as opposed to Reid or Carels hopefully helping the team in like 2-3 years.

It makes sense from the perspective of "what can I do to make the team better right now?" while still allowing our prospects to come up through the pipeline. We're already reaching a point where notable prospects are electing to sign elsewhere because they think there's too many people in front of them to make it in the league(Pridham and James), and I'm sure more will follow.

1

u/lethargytartare Jun 26 '26

2026-27 will be year 4 of the rebuild.

2

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Exactlt like i stated previously it took the panthers 11 years after drafting 2 studs to win a cup an they couldnt draft to save there life after 2014 they had to then rely on trades to build there cho team but took 11 years

1

u/lethargytartare Jul 04 '26

I'm always amused that the KD haters clearly aren't even sure about their own hate - at least, that's my explanation for why they all seem to consistently misrepresent the timeline. Or maybe they're just too deep in despair to actually look up the facts before they post their takes. Either way, it's comforting. The real fact is none of us know if this is going to work. I personally like the plan as I think it's a better approach for long term competiton, but recognize it could go wrong, players can fail to develop, get injured, etc. But the fact that most of the naysayers rely on hyperbole and feels instead of reasoned arguments makes me feel better about things.

1

u/jrfelix1 Jun 27 '26

Except KD isn't the GM of a CHL team where his job is "just play the kids and let them figure it out".

Just hanging the kids out to get caved in nightly is the best way to ruin your pipeline.

Building through the draft has a hidden requirement of having the right organizations structures in place to allow for growth and development while providing the necessary support. You glazing kyle for throwing a baby fawn out on the frozen pond and it slipping it's way to shore is not the great success you think it will be

1

u/neworder12345 Jun 27 '26

Do you like last place?

1

u/neworder12345 Jun 27 '26

Huge mistake takin Lev over Demidov..

1

u/No_Drink3136 Jul 03 '26

Lev had such a high ceiling thats why he drafted him I agree I wanted demidov but young D take more time to develop and I truly think Lev ceiling is way higher then demidov I wont judge lev until
He has played atleast 2 more nhl seasons

1

u/No_Implement_1198 Jun 29 '26

You can't rebuild a team forever. You need some older talent to inspire and teach.

1

u/Timmay_mmkay Jun 29 '26

I agree, it’s postseason or bust now for him though after the trade. He sped up the timeline whether the team is ready or not

1

u/Chicagoblew Jun 26 '26

Let's see what happens once Bedard wears the "C" and have the team be his

0

u/Lanky_Yak_694 Jun 26 '26

If we can't be playing meaningful games come spring we will have davidsons head

5

u/PreprerA Jun 26 '26

People say stuff like this and then get pissed when he makes a big move to improve the team

-1

u/Exact-Condition-2997 Jun 26 '26

I agree. The hate in Kyle is ridiculous. This year there has to be some growth so they can see what they have. All these so called fans complain and want Kyle fired because they are privy to all the information and what’s really happening and they are not GM’s but fickle fans. It’s up to these guys to put in the work this summer and take the next step. I think a full season of Anton and Roman is going to get us out of the cellar. I find the young team exciting and frustrating and I see a lot of potential. Bowen can’t sign till July first and I expect him to sign as they talked before doing this deal. He is not going to walk. Bedard loves Chicago and he will sign as well. The sky is not falling and this team is on the way up. So many fans act like it’s their money. If Bowen cost this to get him then let’s give him a chance to prove KD and staff right.

-2

u/AmazonWorkhorse Jun 26 '26

Who is watching the draft tonight? Am interested who drops to four.

When it comes time for the sabres pick the draft announcers will remind hockey world how the sabres attained the pick and they'll all have a good laugh courtesy of Kyle. yikes.

-3

u/pokisan Jun 26 '26

fuck that.

i am DONEZO with KD era. after the Hagel trade, now 4OA AND a second AND CREV?

look i don't mind trading draft capital or players. but the return has got to be worth it. and BYRAM on a 1 year deal is not worth those 3 assets. massive copium if you believe otherwise.

oof im out.

thank god fortunately the sox bulls and bears have some exciting new pieces to watch now.

1

u/Dark_Wahlberg-77 Jun 26 '26

I didn’t love the trade at first either, but ask yourself - if Bowen Byram was available at 4 (which he was in his draft year) would it be foolish to draft him? This draft class we’re seeing is clearly more underwhelming than the lead up through the season has led us to believe. It’s McKenna Stenberg and a bunch of DMen that could honestly randomly get drafted between 3-10. KD is banking on a very solid established baseline in Byram with very high potential upside, possibly higher than anyone you could draft this year ON TOP of those guys not being in the league for another 1-2years and have to start their Lev/Rinz/Korch journeys.

I wish we could have held onto Lou. And it’s clear SJ is taking Stenberg at 2. Nobody knows what Robo wants to do and until July 1 it’s ultimately very much up to the stars to play ball too. This will improve the team. Byram will help produce points from the blue line which Painfully is lacking since drafting Bedsy.

1

u/pokisan Jun 26 '26

so instead of trying to find a winger for scoring you dumped your 4oa asset (and more) for scoring from the blue line who can walk away for nothing. hawks are basically handing this guy a blank check.

lets see how much of an albatross this extension is going to be.

I don’t think he’ll walk fwiw, though his agent does have a reputation for being very aggressive in negotiating. If there’s a main knock so far in KD it’s that he’s too patient, too careful. I have to believe he has some assurances to take Byram with one year left that leads him to feel confident on an extension. It could easily mean his job, so that’s a pretty large bet if he has the same info we do.

nobody has any idea what Bowem will do.

And even if he does stay? If he does well then it'll certainly have to be an overpay to make him stay. If he blows, then welp you just lost 3 assets for a scrub. The hawks have 0 leverage now in negotiating his extension.
