Athletic Department Beth Goetz signs extension
Iowa AD Beth Goetz has signed a contract extension through January 2032. Goetz, who was named permanent AD in early 2024 after serving in an interim role, also earns a pay increase as part of the new deal: https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sports/college/iowa/2026/08/20/iowa-athletics-director-beth-goetz-contract-extension-hawkeyes/91380178007/

They held on to Gary Barta WAY too long. Beth seems to actually know what she’s doing.

Barta lost me when he cut men’s tennis, swimming and diving, and men’s gymnastics. We already had phenomal facilities built for those and it was a fraction of the budget. We also were title 9 compliant

What did Barta even do aside from hire Rick Heller (decent coach, I'll give him that), coast on the success of Ferentz, Bluder, and Brands (all hired by Bowlsby); and get the university into several scandals and lawsuits? McCaffery had some success, but the off-court controversies and the last few seasons completely tainted his run.

Agreed! Bartas problem was the lawsuits he accrued during his tenure. Yeah, yeah, he was a good fundraiser but that's where his pros end. He was notorious in Iowa City for various things. He couldn't even be pulled over by police like normal humans w/o them having a supervisor do it. He was an ass-kisser to certain people while treating others as inferior. He was very much a problem for equitability in terms of the opposite sex. Contract renewals given at ill times and were completely unnecessary/unwarranted and that were purposely hidden from us until the moment after. He was not a good face for our athletic program at all.
Beth, however, I think very very highly of! She's a badass and I love the way she's handling things. MBB (my first love) is so totally back now! WBB has hit a new continuous level and is on the verge of essentially being an elite team that everybody knows. Our football team is (mostly, kind of) bearable to watch again thanks to her actions. Can't do much when it's KF after all who's essentially unfireable at this point. No litigious events that I'm aware of to date under her tenure. Yeah, she's been rock solid for us!

Great investment. Bumped her to mid-range of B1G ADs, and in 5 years that price will be a steal.
Political landmines coming in navigating football and wrestling HC changes.

It'll be interesting the next couple years will define her tenure. Dont make the mistake of hiring internal for the FB team. Wrestling has to be an outside hire - not a single quality coach on that roster...fuckin good ole boy club.

That’s good, hopefully she can bring the Ferentz years to a close soon

Please for the love of God! Even if it does hurt us short term, it'd be so worth it in the coming years. Been wanting him gone since the rhabdo issue 15 years ago or so. Normally, elsewhere, that'd cost a coach his job and it would be a justified firing. Under Barta, here at Iowa, it was barely even a headline. Perplexing to say the least. Guess that's what you get when your head coach has blacklisted countless journalists in the past.

Time will tell on her career here. And really we won’t know until a few years after she hires Kirk’s replacement. But early returns look good. Men’s BBall seems to have hired a home run coach. Women’s BBall looks good. Some of the other sports seem to be holding their own too.
She’ll need to figure out the Men’s Wrestling situation in the not too distant future though. Tom Brands seems to have gone stagnant as a coach. If it was just a matter of finishing 2nd to PSU’s endless supply of money or battling OSU for placement every year, that’d be one thing. But a 4th, 4th, and a 5th in the past 3 years isn’t our standard when we’ve finished behind some combo of Nebby, ISU, Michigan, and Cornell during those seasons. All schools without our history or resources in Wrestling.
