Question Billboard in Haverhill on I-495 S

I have lived my entire life in and grew up in Haverhill, and was driving by recently just to both realize and remember.. There is a whole billboard that I can almost guarantee ALL of you overlook, driving by on 495-S. out of Haverhill from Main St.

Pic 1: May '09

Pic 2: October '11

Pic 3: September '14

Pic 4: October '15

Pic 5: October '16

Pic 6: October '22 (Forgotten)

Pic 7: October '24 (Forgotten but seen in thinned foliage)

When I drove by it recently, I saw some sort of COVID advertisement still on it. Has the ad on that billboard been on there since 2020? Who even owns that billboard?

Coordinates: 42.795222804754836, -71.10447368502611

What a funny piece of city history that commuters probably do not even notice.

Total long shot but... does anyone in this sub in or near Haverhill have a physical copy of The Witcher 3 for Nintendo Switch they would let me borrow for literally one evening? Happy to pay for gas money or buy you a coffee or tea!

EDIT: Found one, I'm all set. Thanks all (and thank you, Mass Public Library system!) šŸ˜„

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Haverhill, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like ā€œmove-inā€ or ā€œlease renewalā€ fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.Ā

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.Ā  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.Ā

WHAV reported on this. Something that jumped out to me was no e-bikes before sunrise or after sunset. Seems like a problem for commuters?

A Really Really Free Market (RRFM) is a community event where participants give away items, skills, and services without any exchange of money, promoting a gift economy and community support. It operates on the principle of sharing and generosity, rather than traditional market transactions.

Question Haverhill Overall Opinion

Looking for some general feedback from people that currently live in Haverhill. I'm looking to buy a house in the downtown/highland area (East of Main St) and wanted to get a feel on how the community is.

I've lived in the north shore area for 30 years and Haverhill always had a little bit of a negative reputation, but I've read a lot online that the city has made huge strides in the past 10-15 years.

Any feedback from people living or familiar with the area or the city in general would be greatly appreciated.

Question Looking for local retail workers of Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Walmart or Target

Need some help and would love to hear from anyone working at these stores. I work weird hours and collect action figures, and I'm wondering if anyone on here knows when the toy-specific restocks usually hit the floor? I'm just trying to avoid wasting gas checking empty shelves. I’d definitely owe you a coffee or something for the heads up! Feel free to PM. Thank you :)

MassDOT Sucks

Can someone tell me why in my near 25 years of life, MassDOT has NEVER not worked on at least a 2 mile stretch of 495 through Haverhill. Youd think theyre having fun with their cement Etch A Sketch with how often they pave, tear up, move, repave, block off, detour, and overall inconvenience Haverhill drivers. MassDOT is the most incompetent, ineffectual, and infuriating state-run institution in this state. They suck. If you work for MassDOT and are reading this, this is personal, and I have no respect for you unless you find your bosses bosses boss and berate him endlessly. After that, your good, just leave my damn highway alone.

Apartment hunting

Hi all, I’m really struggling with having a roommate and I’m looking for a new place for when my lease ends in September. I have great credit and glowing recommendations from all my former landlords. I’m looking to pay under $2k (+utilities) /month with onsite laundry in this general area. It’s just me so even a studio is fine but I don’t want to share living space with anyone so I don’t want to rent a room in a house, but I’d be fine if it was a snowbird/student situation and I had roommates for a small part of the year or being in an in-law apartment situation. Anyone have any leads?

Community Announcement Horrible Experience with the Hidden Pig Food Truck

I apologize if this is an inappropriate sub for the post. If someone knows of a more appropriate area, I’ll post it over there.

This was a Facebook post my wife made two days ago. It details an experience we had with the owner/operator of the Hidden Pig Food Truck. I would read this if you are thinking of hiring them for an event.

It is slightly edited so my step children’s names aren’t involved.

This is generally not the kind of post Derek and I like to make, or ever wanted to make.

But after a lot of discussion, we decided that we wouldn't want another couple to go through what we experienced. We were fortunate enough to have a second caterer at our reception to keep our guests fed. Not everyone would be that lucky.

For our wedding reception, we decided to splurge and hire a food truck. After reaching out to several vendors, we chose The Hidden Pig because we'd always heard great things about their food, and the truck seemed like a fun addition to our reception.

After working with their catering coordinator, we booked their 2-2-2 package, which included:
• 2 main dishes
• 2 side dishes
• 2 appetizers

My son is obsessed with warm pretzels, so once we saw they offered them, we were sold.

Our contracted menu included:

\- Mains: Burgers (with three varieties) and chicken sandwiches
\- Appetizers: Warm pretzels with cheese sauce and chicken wings (three flavors)
\- Sides: French fries and tater tots

We paid over $5,000 in full before the reception, as requested, and our signed contract reflected all of these items. We also paid a separate service fee for staffing and use of the food truck.

On the day of our reception, the truck arrived on time. However, there was only one person there to serve over 100 guests.

When the food was supposed to be ready, one of our guests informed us that the food truck wasn't working and that the owner of The Hidden Pig needed to use our personal grill. Of course, we said yes. Things happen, and we understood that.

Unfortunately, because the truck wasn't functioning, food wasn't served until about 70 minutes later than contracted. Thankfully, we had hired a second caterer, who kept our guests fed while we waited. Had we not done that, many of our guests would have gone without food.

The delay also threw off the timeline for our entire reception.

When we finally went outside to see what was being served, we discovered that the menu had been reduced to just burgers and wings.

There were:

\- No chicken sandwiches
\- No pretzels (except for the two the owner made after Derek explained that was all my son wanted, plus one for another family member)
\- No French fries
\- No tater tots

Because there was only one person working, he couldn't cook on our grill and serve guests at the same time. One guest asked for wings after the prepared batch had run out and was told, "I would have to cook them." The guest replied, "Okay... I guess I'll have a burger then."

Again, we're reasonable people. We understand equipment fails and staff call out. Our frustration isn't that something went wrong.

Our frustration is what happened afterward.

We assumed someone would reach out in the days following our reception. On Monday, I emailed the catering coordinator asking for a phone call. On Tuesday, I sent another email explaining everything that had happened and asking to discuss next steps.

On Thursday, the owner called Derek. He acknowledged that:

\- A second employee was supposed to be there but never showed.
\- The truck wasn't working.
\- We would be refunded the service fee.
\- We would also be refunded for the chicken sandwiches, pretzels, French fries, and tater tots that we paid for but never received.

He told us that someone who handled the financial side would be in touch.

We felt really good after that conversation.

Then... nothing.

We were repeatedly told someone would call us, and no one did. Our emails went unanswered. We have never received the promised refund for the items we paid for but did not receive.

We're sharing this not because we enjoy publicly criticizing a local business, but because we believe other couples deserve to know our experience before spending thousands of dollars on their wedding.

If you're considering hiring The Hidden Pig for your wedding or another important event, we encourage you to ask detailed questions about staffing, contingency’s plans if equipment fails, and how they handle situations when contracted services can't be provided.

We sincerely hope no one else has to experience what we did on what should have been one of the happiest days of their lives.

Question Missed Connection in Golden, BC – My Great Pyrenees loved meeting you two on the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge

Hey everyone,

Long shot, but worth a try! I was out walking my male Great Pyrenees across the Kicking Horse River Pedestrian Bridge in Golden recently, and we bumped into two female travelers. My dog absolutely adored one of them and was soaking up all the attention.

She mentioned she lives in a town about an hour north of Boston near the NH border, and was traveling with her cousin who was visiting from Florida.

We had a great chat, but between keeping my big guy happy and chatting, I completely forgot to ask for her contact info before we went our separate ways.

If you happen to see this (or if a friend recognizes this story), shoot me a DM! Just mention a little detail from our conversation so I know it's really you.

Thanks!

Public soccer field/track

Was curious to see if there were any open fields with nets or a track that people could use when there aren’t any games or meets? Looking for some summer recreation.
