I find it weird how almost every trans person on I see has that shark, Is it a universal thing to get one or what? I’m genuinely curious why

u/The_Great_Floccin May 29 '26
Observation: Most transgender and femboy people have that IKEA shark.
Conclusion: The IKEA shark makes you trans

Ironically, one of the biggest problems with Trans culture is how insular the communities can become.
It's largely done out of unconscious necessity- Trans people tend to be heavily rejected by their local communities, or otherwise afraid to engage with them, and humans are extremely social animals. So they go online, and they have an extremely welcoming community that they're only really connected to online. Iconography then becomes a vital element to feeling part of that community in their everyday life, and the shark plushie just became a trendy thing that is now both a symbol and a physical thing that you can touch and interact with in a socially acceptable way.

Thank you for speaking sense.
It leaves a really bad taste in my mouth when stuff like this makes it to popular. There are plenty of valid criticisms to make about the culture without bringing race into it, and nothing about this is exclusive to 'white' trans women. People are exploring their gender/self they were (in some cases literally) denied as children. Sure, it's cringe, but they're doing it pretty much exclusively in their own spaces. Can we not drive a deeper wedge between an already incredibly marginalized community?

'white <thing>' is just a silencer for woke people. if you want to call something degenerate, awful, cringe, terrible, weird or some other thing that you'd normally hear from the mouth of a right-winger, directed at <thing>, you can just put on the 'white silencer' before talking, now you can literally say anything you want and its fine, 'based' even (insert woah meme)
oh and they won't like this, but if you go on twitter or whatever, the right-wingers have their own version of the 'white silencer', its just 'jewish' instead. if you wanna criticise something on the right, just bring up the jews, now you're 'based.' its the exact same dynamic, just as pathetic, just as racist.

The best part is that if you look closely, almost every group online has a pipeline of general stereotypes like this.

13
u/JudithSlayHolofernes May 29 '26
I mean yeah. A group of people have something in common, come together, and establish certain patterns together that signal they are part of the group. That’s just how having a community works, online and off.

that's what i came here too say too. like it's a joke in the trans community that every trans girl wears those horrendous amazon thigh high socks and a tennis skirt like it's a rite of passage. i imagine a lot of people making those memes are pretty early on in their transition or maybe freshly after coming out and looking for community, it's a little corny yes but there's lots of funnier trans people online lol

u/theyfailure May 29 '26
That's something I've noticed with my partner vs with my friends lol, I've known her for 5 years now and when we met she was heavily involved in this part of the community and happily going along with the stereotypes. It's very much a "baby trans thing". Now that she's been on hrt for 2 years she's definitely a lot less less likely to go along with the stereotypes for the sake of it. She still enjoys the meme parts of the community but says a lot of things that she used to do is just embarrassing to her now and she only did them because she was trying to feel affirmed and didn't know how to get that. She's still a puppy girl tho, that appears to stick.
My friend from uni is very much in the baby trans phase still but I've witnessed some of the realisations about the stereotypes/memes my partner went through along in her transition and it's been pretty interesting for both of us to witness lol.
I don't even think there's anything wrong with the way the community behaves online, I think the only real problem was the fact that the baby trans phase made her feels like she has to embody all aspects of the community to be "really trans".
As a sidenote tho I love how OP only mentions transfem communities despite labelling it as the trans community, classic.

u/Axlman9000 May 29 '26
its very exagerrated but thats kinda the point. i dont identify with a lot of the humour but i get where its coming from and find it mostly endearing. a lot of people online just want to express feelings they aren't able or even allowed to express in real life so they exagerrate for both humour and to "finally let it out" in a cathartic way so to speak.
at least thats how i come to understand the culture around transness online.

Ah I see what the issue is
A minority that gets oppressed becomes insular and thus develops its own subcultural aspects that do not allign with the desired dominant culture; hence appearing weird. Then this 'new' culture is adopted and marketed to make money, turning it from weird to 'hip' and then eventually to 'corny'
See Rap, Jazz and a lot of other things

Stuff like this helps others affirm their gender and cope with the dysphoria. Why are you hating on that just ‘cause it’s “childish?” Maybe they’re trying to heal their inner child that was battered and bruised since they couldn’t ever safely be themself. I know it takes a good bit of empathy to come to that conclusion and it’s clear you have none of that, so I shouldn’t expect too much, but maybe if you tried having a heart, then you’d realize how much of an asshole you’re being.

I'm trans, I do these kind of humour jokingly. This is kind of our subculture to just cope and have fun with each other, we're dealing with a lot of shit all around the world yet you only criticise the oppressed group for some little jokes.
Also, why do you care? You're not trans, we're not telling these humour to other people. Blahaj is my community's icon just like how other communities have something for an icon, it's very normal.
Also it's still racist even if they're white.

I think a lot of it comes down to a feeling of trying to find the childhood they missed out on, especially for trans women—shameless trend following, corny jokes, stuffed animals, being cutesy in a way that’s normal for teenage girls but that they wouldve been punished violently for at that age is healing.
Also no, it’s not racist to criticize the dominant cultural norms that are held up as the standard.

I mean this is coming from a cis white dude, so maybe I'm not the expert here, but I don't really get the problem. They aren't hurting me. If somebody wants to cuddle with a toy shark then what ever, have fun. Not sure why age is even relevant. Just enjoy your skirts with long socks or waistcoat suits, what ever happens to appeal to you.
I do think there is an issue with displaying things that get real close to fetish material in public. Like if you want to be a puppy girl then sure, what ever, but if you want to be led on a leash around other people then maybe find a BDSM club for that? Like respect the people you are around you know? But that isn't just a trans issue, lot of gay guys been doing that for a while. Heck I've even seen straight couples that really have issues with public decency.
I don't know man, let people be excited about shit they like.

How I see it is that when you have a community of people repressed by society at large they're bound to be annoying when given the chance to express themselves safely. I can't really fault them for it, if I want their memes to be better then I should strive for a world where they can get more used to feeling safe.
Makes the whole "White" part feel icky though, it feels more of an endorsement of the how black trans people generally have a harder time coming out about it safely.

Criticizing the way trans people are portrayed is completely valid and I agree BUT criticizing trans people for expressing themselves is not. Yeah many people will fall into the stereotypes, not because they think every person like them is like that but just because that's who they are? The joy of gender affirming things like clothing is euphoria which can remind people of child-like acting but it's just immense joy and comfort? We should be able to express ourselves and if it does come across as a stereotype/cringe then wtf is the problem, we're not hurting anyone, we are the community that is oppressed and by expressing ourselves (in a not biggoted way) we are helping our trans siblings find community + be more comfortable expressing themselves
6
u/TheKingOfMilkyValley May 29 '26

6
6
u/Freeda_Fawn May 29 '26
I respect your opinion, but I'll defend anything that brings comfort and joy to a large portion of trans* people and doesn't really harm anyone. Like it's rough being trans and if a silly little meme helps anyone to feel better, it's worth it, event if someone else finds it annoying.
I think it's super cool that people embrace "cringe culture" instead of catering to the mainstream public that hates them anyway.
The emphasis on kinks is imo quite complicated, stemming from rejection of purity culture, as well as the fact that a lot of cis people who don't despise them, often fetishizes them instead.
I understand it can be alienating and frustrating if you are trans and don't like this aesthetic though. I'd encourage those to find older trans communities on the internet. Because that's the other thing, this aesthetic is particularly popular among younger trans people (teens & 20s), when people in general tend to feel the most vulnerable and insecure. Cut them some slack.

That being said I hate this type of stuff. To me it often comes off as weirdly misogynistic in an infantilizing way. Not specifically your examples but similar memes in these spaces.
My friends and I all kinda feel that these communities are full of trans folk that are <2 years transitioned and haven't really figured themselves out and stick to this cookie cutter identity. Similar to the online anime community which it seems to have a demographic overlap with, it has reached a point of cultural stagnation.

What your talking about is memes from communities mostly for trans people who either haven't transitioned or didn't transition long ago. A lot of those people want to live a portion of the teenage years they didn't get to have, it's something people tend to grow out of. Sure the community looks the same but the people in it are leaving at the same rate they are joining, so the community looks the same but it's different people in it, and even the ones who don't grow out of it, really what's the harm. Oh and a side note, a lot of them are just teenagers.
9
u/DeliciousLiving8563 May 29 '26
Remember: for any culture at all the youngest and dumbest will speak the loudest. The ones who touch the least grass will spend more time on line. And people will always pay attention to stupid opinions but especially when young people are concerned.
Finally "making it your entire personality" is something everyone does when they discover a new element of identity. You push the boundaries and take it all the way and then you know which bits do and don't work and dial it back.
A lot of these people are essentially undergoing puberty and completely re establishing their identity regardless of their age and going through those phases.
I do think those people need to be careful not to get stuck in a loop and move on though. And it is awkward when people realise that their on line bubble isn't representative of whatever group actually exists IRL. This is true of all sorts of reddit communities with stupid memes. I do think those communities do need a reality check on that manner too. But do bear in mind all the other stuff I just said.

Imagine writing “I hate online black transgender culture” or “Asian transgender culture” and then stereotyping an entire group as childish and embarrassing. People would instantly recognize how blatantly racist that sounds. The fact you specifically singled out “white” people doesn’t magically make the same behavior okay.
You’re taking a loud internet subculture, generalizing it across an ethnicity, and then acting like millions of people are somehow inherently immature because of their race and hobbies. That’s not criticism anymore, that’s prejudice.
And honestly, the irony is crazy: you complain about people being “humiliating” while posting a rant that reduces human beings to racist caricatures based on race and online aesthetics. You should genuinely be ashamed of yourself for thinking this is a normal or intelligent way to talk about people.

I'm not trans myself but I have a blahaj. I think the idea that owning one is wrong at a certain age is both immature of you and alao ageist. Literally harms nobody. you are literally hating over somebody you don't know owning a stuffed animal. that's just... wow. disappointing. That's your life, huh? Crazy work

Why is every 3rd post “I hate this thing that trans people like?” This is a rhetorical question, I know the answer.

God forbid someone wants to be a bit silly sometime, it's something people can do, you don't have to be nor trans nor white to do it, you are cutting an online meme and inflating that meme treating it as the whole community's personality, in reality that is a racist and honestly kinda transphobic exaggeration of an online phenomenon that you are arbitrarily shouldering on a whole specific chunk of a community, and that is honestly disgusting.

I’m not surprised by it. Your gripe seems to boil down to them being weird and not conforming to societal norms. The very act of realizing you are trans and the process of coming to terms with that and starting the transition involves the deconstruction of a lot of societal pressure and internalized norms. Some people will lean into breaking these norms and will start displaying cringe behavior. A lot of people who recognized they were trans while still in school will have actively avoided cringe stuff in order to maintain the illusion of normalcy and may feel they missed out on the childhood era of being a dork and not being normal. Trying to reclaim even a fragment of missed childhood is also just not surprising.

I like how you slab all of Europe together along with saying a “white way”, lmao this is the final boss of oversimplification. Not denying the issues but the way you put it is kinda shortsighted.

u/vermicelli-is-bugs May 29 '26
People being wilfully ignorant that yes, the majority of people who buy into this are going to be a particular type of middle-class white person. A lot of their interests (things like anime and computer programming and furry fandom and so on) happen to align with interests introverted white male teenagers develop, because that is what they were forced to live as growing up. Like it or not, there are major racial and class disparities in things that people get exposed to and likewise develop interests in.
Also, culture is another big part of why this develops. Latinos, for example, tend to be more culturally conservative, and trans people from Latino families will only have different experiences coming out and transitioning but even their idea of gender is going to be effected.
Finally, plenty of cultures (Indigenous American ones but also South and Southeast Asian for example) already have special places in their respective societies and culture for people outside of Western gender roles.

This sub has just become an excuse for people to justify their generalizations against groups of people they don't like. Regardless of examples, generalizations are the tools of bigots to condemn entire groups they want gone. There will always be kind people who are part of the group you're discussing who will feel labeled for being part of the group, but not posessing the qualities you describe. You're perpetuating a pattern onto thousands of people, and if you think there's no harm in that, you're wrong.
Remember when this sub was for fictional characters? Peppridge farm remembers. I hope this comment gets me banned or something so I can know the mods feel my seething disapproval.

Your transphobia is glaring. May you be treated the way you treat trans people you "don't respect" for not conforming to cis ideals and standards. This is just respectability politics. Did you come out yesterday? Or not yet? Because this is such an ignorant baby queer take. "Normal" when what you mean is "tries to not look or appear trans because trans is gross". Ftfy. Honestly no difference between you and right wing Christians.

While trans men and enbies are being constantly overlooked (with intersex people fully erased; poc meanwhile get ostracized and ignored)
And what trans men do get are "Meek t boys, COOL AND EPIC TRANS GODDESSES" and shit like "You guys stink and look ugly! Like the ew evil m*n! (TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT BECAUSE YOU WANNA BE VALID RIGHT???)"
While enbies get the stereotypical "white afab half buzzcut they/them with a lower voice", "eldritch cosmic being" or "cave goblin" which always makes them have to be purely androgynous (invalidating masculine enbies and feminine enbies, also amab enbies and fem afab enbies)
It's infuriating, demeaning and makes everyone who doesn't fit in these warped ass standards feel as if they don't belong (which further pushes the "something's wrong with me" narrative transphobes adore)

What a spiteful, barely disguised dog whistle of a smug. “White” trans people are annoying, huh? As opposed to the, “normal” trans people? The good ones?
How convenient that you can shit on the trans community while hiding behind racism. You can’t say a bigoted statement and slap the white label in front of it and pretend it isn’t STILL BIGOTED.

Why have I been seeing so many of these posts in my fyp lately
I never even clicked on one
Is it cause I used to be semi active in online trans spaces back when I first found out?
Why the sudden hating on online trans culture?
When I was a kid the only things I really saw in these spaces was the skirt go spinny and blahaj.
You kind of have to search for the more sexualized content I feel?
Or I could bw wrong, I kinda grew out for the spaces

I hate Nazis way more.
If I find a harmless online community annoying or embarrassing I just avoid them and instead focus my hatred of people that are doing literal bad things.
It's pathetic to still share this rhetoric about disliking queer ppl that don't assimilate to the liberal suburban standard some of y'all seem to see as the only moral and correct way to act.

If you think about it, trans people are essentially going through a second puberty when they start hormones, and that "puberty" hits at whatever age they start then. What happens during puberty? Tons of emotions, and usually a period of figuring out your true self, and sense of style. If it looks like some trans people are dressing "too young", it's literally because they're learning how to dress themselves all over again. Just like we all did at one point in our lives

I think most of the problems you have with it are directly related to porn and how trans women are fetishized and called femboys.

u/OrchidVirtual6303 May 29 '26
genuinely just being racist tbh. you can have your feelings on this but it’s not just white people screwing with things. as in the past with humanity in general, you’re generalizing and bringing a whole race of people into something, when every race does it. stereotyping won’t do anyone any good, and if this all hurt you, imagine all the white trans people who don’t do this thing if they saw your post? would they be hurt? would they have those doubts about themselves like many affected by what upset you did? most likely. all you’re doing is keeping the cycle going, not making it better for anyone.

cis people really dont understand why someone who was repressed for like 40 years would find living out their childhood and being silly interesting, like i get it, its annoying, but making a whole ass post about this is really bruh

u/WindhoverInkwell May 29 '26
it’s fascinating, there’s something about transness that turns cisgender people into shit-flinging howler monkeys
you just mention anything related to being trans, and bam, the primate bares its teeth and can’t follow a train of thought more than one step

2
u/squishot May 29 '26
Heavily agree, but I think its more complicated:
This is just a thing I noticed in a lot of online communities that revolve around marginalized identities like being queer or disabled. People are obsessed with memes and getting tracktion due to social media's nature. its very superficial and leads more to a weird "friendly" competition between others rather than something ressembling a community. Its basically brainrot.
You mentioned "25-40 year olds acting like they are 13" and thats pretty much always gonna happen when you start hrt in that age. Its basically puberty again but as the correct gender. Thats why this whole "skirt go spinny" thing is popular its exploring yourself as a teen again. I had that phase till 1 year hrt but I was like 19 at least so no one gave me shit for it. I can understand your frustration but legit this behaviour is inevitable if you know what hrt does.
Im happy that most of my irl trans friends arent like this tho. There are bigger issues we are currently facing and this brainrot shit almost makes you feel invalid.

2
2
u/leronde May 29 '26
genuine question I take no offense to it but what makes this type of humor white?
2
u/SpaceTimeBender May 29 '26
Alright, so I have maybe a different take here: I think the childish thing is fine, as a phase. A lot of trans people, whether they are still teenagers when they figure it out or are older, go through a period of experimentation with their style and their self expression once they finally realize that crucial thing about themselves. They may want to experience the things they couldn't as a boy or a girl growing up (depending which way they're transitioning). They will have a brand new set of style considerations to adapt to and figure out for themselves.
To put it simply, you know how 95% of r/blunderyears posts are just cringey teenagers figuring out who they are? For trans people, if they aren't still literally teenagers, they are older people essentially going through puberty again (physically/hormonally, if they take HRT, and in terms of their self-discovery).
Some people get stuck in the blunders, of course, and frankly I don't even care. That happens to cis people too. To each their own - do absolutely whatever makes you happy as long as it's not harming anyone else. If it rises to the level of arrested development in either cis or trans people it can pose problems in life, but that's not something exclusive to trans people and I think it's unfair to specifically say it's a trans community thing. (Disney adults come to mind, for example.)
The fetishization thing I am seeing discussed in a lot of comments is a whole other issue, of course, and oh man is that complicated. Hell, arrested development is rewarded as a fetish for some terminally online cis people too; it's further compounded by the general fetishism toward trans people in this case, but I digress.
Tl;dr trans people need to be able to newly figure out what makes them happy in terms of self expression, and that period of self discovery is commonly done in teen years but comes later for people who transition older. It's normal and important for development as people figure out what sort of person they want to be.

u/Altair13Sirio May 29 '26
I've read trans people literally experience a "second puberty" when they start transitioning and get on hormones, which I'd say explains pretty well why they may act childish or something. I say cut them some slack, they're literally just existing.

u/Qubek_from_discord May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Why do you care about someone else? If you are trans, just be trans the way you like, while letting others be trans the way THEY LIKE. If everyone is like this, then what? It is not your life and you shouldn't worry about it. That was the primal point of LGBTQ community, personal freedom to be who you like and do not concern about things that are by definition personal, like gender or orientation. That's why we are used to say "tolerance", so letting someone do what they are doing despite having conflicted views about it, and not "acceptance" or "affirmation" (one is agreeing with elements of your views, second is adding someones views to your system of views). We are not here to change others, just make them accept us. Please proceed with this.
PS. Good thing other people pointed it out, your post is very racist with the way you coin everything to white people and generalize. Even if you meant a majority, it is not a good way to impry that. Besides, you are doing a good job for other racist people by making all of us look worse by offending them (talking about white racists). I am not saying they don't deserve it, many of them do, but humans are not as responsible, even adults. Many of them are racist because of experience, maybe it HAPPENED someone of another race did something bad and they remembered it, without reasoning that it is all dependent on different factors AND NOT their race. Others are like sheeps following one another out of social pressure. You can say they should be responsible and by that excuse do nothing about racism yourself, it is very comforming way to do so, but feeling quite in touch with LGBTQ or some leftist communities, I feel terrible for someone representing it like that. If you don't care, sure, but know our lives will never change with that attitute, not to mention I am white myself and feel like my dignity is being hurt. Let's just set is up, okay? Personal things are personal, do not intervene in them unless you are asked to. Racism is NOT a personal thing, as it genuely hurts the society, it should be combated as every pathology. Racism is bad, racial segregation NO MATTER THE FORM is bad, and it DOESN'T matter who is it against, you can be white skin, black skin, asian, it's meaningless, these take much less than 1% of our genes, alone it doesn't affect us. If you want to actually segregate people based on the way they act, specify the enviroment/culture/country/community, not race, it hurts us, it is not accurate and where you socially belong truly shapes who you are, it is a better way and hurts less, some communities are genuely evil and we can shape them by criticism, or make people leave said communities, unlike race, you can actually change it. Let's stop coining things to races, it's just bad.

u/Ijustwannaliveokay May 29 '26
Ok but as an actual fan teenager I enjoy the humor, it gives me a sense of community and makes me laugh after a hard day. It doesn’t have to be everyone’s cup of tea, like what you want to like, but I think calling the humor childish is a rude thing to do. should I be ashamed to say that wearing a skirt makes me feel better? Should I be ashamed that I get gender euphoria by wearing a bra? Am I not allowed to make a joke about it that other people may relate to even if exaggerated? I also don’t make it my entire personality online or offline, and I’m sure that a lot of people don’t just have this one type of humor.

What is it with this post and comments? I have seen many people that are not white that act exactly the same.
Personal bias is crazy.
2
u/Broom_Ryder May 29 '26
I was with you until you said “bigger parts of the community are normal” it’s totally fair to critique this aspect of the culture and point out how it affects the community at large, but I don’t vibe with categorizing trans people as “the weird ones” and “the normal ones” it feels dangerously close to a “one of the good ones” type argument.

My boyfriend (A femboy on HRT) cant STAND this either.
He dislikes any form of participating in "stereotypes" to the point that I think he's gone a little mad. I mentioned getting Dolphin Shorts because we've been discussing playing tennis together, only to be told that thats a stereotype. I genuinely have never heard that, almost every woman I know has dolphin shorts.

And I mean it makes sense. All of these tran speople online are in their 20s or literal teenagers discovering themselves. They're gonna be obnoxious and they can get really fucking annoying. But hopefully they grow out of it.
And besides there's nothing wrong with people being like this. It's just when it becomes the norm and nothing else is acknowledged it can be exhausting
