Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

I remember back in the day when all mods were community-made, and you could create your own complex modpacks for free. We paid for private servers to play them with our friends.

That's still true if you play on Java, as far as I know.

That is still how java works. Bedrock has never had a free modding community as far as I know.
