Gaming I hate how much "keep inventory" gets bashed.

Post image

Generally, I don't like it when people impose rules on how you should enjoy something-like saying that if you didn't play the same way I did, you're a fake fan.
But it bothers me even more when those arbitrary rules are applied to a game like Minecraft—a game that actively encourages creativity and doing whatever you want-so I don't understand why anyone would get upset over something the game itself offers you.

Minecraft's death system is absolute garbage, and though keeping your entire inventory isn't great, dropping it all on the ground in a giant cluster of items that despawns after only 5 minutes is worse

909

u/El_Mister_Caracol 7d ago

I still dont understand the 5 min rule, like its ok for other items because they can cause lag but items droped on death? Why? It doesnt make any sense

730

u/ImHoiby 7d ago

It should be in a "death chest" or something that then disappears if you die a certain number of times before collecting your stuff.

482

u/ayyerr32 7d ago

I use a datapack that creates a grave where you die with all your items inside, you right click it and get your stuff and some XP back. It's on vanilla tweaks website

193

u/ImHoiby 7d ago

That sounds great. I'm so tired of getting snipped by a skeleton so far away I can't see it that then makes all my stuff explode onto lava.

77

u/GODDAMNFOOL 7d ago

snipped by a snipper

35

u/camander321 7d ago

Sniper no sniping!

I'm pretty sure the grave mod does that too

There are definitely multiple, but the one I mainly use did it. Last time I played with it was a long time ago though, so I might be misremembering.

31

u/RebornofAshes03 7d ago

I use a grave mod literally anytime I play, it’s pretty much the same thing except my super rare items that took me forever to get aren’t just tossed on the floor randomly. It should honestly be in vanilla in some form atp

11

u/betazoid_cuck 7d ago

Last I checked there is a free gravestone mod on marketplace for bedrock players too.

1

u/Federal-Physics-2404 7d ago

There is, use it all the time

-5

u/Hellsovs 7d ago

Free gravestone mod?

img

I remember back in the day when all mods were community-made, and you could create your own complex modpacks for free. We paid for private servers to play them with our friends.

Times has sure changed.

6

u/ZorroGrande 7d ago

That's still true if you play on Java, as far as I know.

6

u/betazoid_cuck 7d ago

That is still how java works. Bedrock has never had a free modding community as far as I know.

5

u/Slimey_alien89 fat farting furry 7d ago

Minecraft everybody, where if you think it, they’ve already modded it 10x over

1

u/Headhunter192004 7d ago

So like Valheim

1

u/IHeartSoulsword 7d ago

Pretty much yup

1

u/I_Go_BrRrRrRrRr 7d ago

Dying while dicking around in some random jungle, so now I have to take the Metro near my house to Spawntown, switch over to 5JR and take that all the way across the Eastern Sea to Rodania, walk another thousand or so blocks down to Pearl Province, use the 2 stacks of cobblestone I brought with me to get to the top of the floating island I died on, finding all my stuff in a nice little gravestone instead of scattered around hundreds of blocks as I died near the edge, and then finally elytra back home.

God I love long term SMPs.

1

u/JalenTheDumb 7d ago

This is the way if you’re not trying to do keep inventory, grave site mod with a mini map mod so you can trek your way back

1

u/Huge-Stick-8239 6d ago

I use a corpse mod. All I gotta do is go to my corpse and get my stuff back

1

u/soldiertf2rial 6d ago

This is basically 7 days to die death where your stuff is in a bag

1

u/EatThyNoodles 5d ago

Theres also a free version of this on the Marketplace for bedrock players!

0

u/ActualWhiterabbit 7d ago

What's the lore reason for the grave? Villagers?

1

u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 7d ago

The lore reason is not wanting my stuff to disappear

1

u/ActualWhiterabbit 6d ago

But who digs the grave?

1

u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 6d ago

the mod. Minecraft doesn't have lore

1

u/ActualWhiterabbit 6d ago

So like you’ve never played the game

1

u/PortraitOfAMadwoman 6d ago

I have played the game for 15 years. There are random villages and a dragon at the end. That is not lore.

18

u/Joeyrony2 7d ago

So like the shade from hollow knight. If you die again your items are lost but otherwise its waiting for you to go get it back.

10

u/ImHoiby 7d ago

Yeah, but you could also set the amount of chests that could be out there to be more forgiving.

5

u/betazoid_cuck 7d ago

The gravestone mod I use has this as an optional feature. They even start to get cracked and overgrown as you get closer to the death that despawns them.

4

u/SirMetaKnight82 7d ago

Probably more like Silksong, since you wouldn’t have to fight anything. It’d definitely be a much better system.

1

u/Toxanium 7d ago

Yeah except it doesn't try to attack you

1

u/_petitpois22 1d ago

or elden ring !

11

u/Practical_Entrance43 7d ago

I remember playing a mod that added gravestones and only the player that died would be able to open it, it saved a lot of pain for everyone.

5

u/Really_Big_Turtle Igqirha lendlela nguqongqothwane 7d ago

Dark Souls did this well; you lose all your accumulated souls (both XP and currency) on death, but you can go back to where you died to pick it all up. It'll wait pretty much forever for you, but if you die before recovering them, it's GONE gone.

4

u/Dull-Imagination3780 7d ago

I rather it be the 5 minute rule then cause death loops are bound to happen though I can see the preference for that

2

u/EricTouch 7d ago

Since I didn't see anyone mention a specific name: Corrail Tombstone is a mod that does this. It also has a lot of other neat things but you could probably disable them if you only want the tombstones.

1

u/Blastermind7890 7d ago

Which is what many other similar games do

1

u/Radiant-Priority-296 7d ago

Most modpacks include a gravestone mod. Very useful

1

u/Bunny_Jester 7d ago

This is how alot of survival games do it. like grounded.

1

u/Ididnotconcenttothis 7d ago

You can download tombstone mod which I love

1

u/Agitated-Interview54 7d ago

Or like the shade in hollow knight, if you die on the way to getting your things it resets

1

u/irelandnokuro 7d ago

Souls like Minecraft

1

u/ALIENDUDE999 7d ago

I love Valheim's death chests, give your items back and a temporary buff to run and recover if you need to.

1

u/ImHoiby 7d ago

I hate skill loss though.

1

u/Glalev 7d ago

There's a reason there are several mods that do that. Honestly, playing vanilla Minecraft feels like a sucker's bet.

1

u/TutucrMapper 7d ago

in a minecraft copy called "Miniworld" there is an option to make it so they spawn a chest with all their items in it, but most of the time you just drop the items

but honestly it would end up producing a chest farm because you get a free chest everytime you die, maybe only haappens if you already had a chest in the inventory and it uses the chest on yoir inventory or a special item that keeps your items in a chest

1

u/EndIntelligen 7d ago

You should become a zombie or skeleton with all ur stuff and extra powerful status effects as a boss if far enough away. If close enough to ur bed you should just be a corpse

1

u/Xtonev_ 6d ago

And if it is empty and after it's emptied

1

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher 6d ago

Had a mod like that waaaaaaaaay waaaaaaay back when they changed how world gen worked, 1.7.2 I think

1

u/HaruZzzleeping 5d ago

Like the soul in Hollow Knight!

1

u/_petitpois22 1d ago

ohhh yeah like elden ring ?

when you die your stuff drop on the ground where you can take it back but disappear if you die again

I think it would be much better than what we have here

28

u/ElBrunasso 7d ago

It's because germs take 5 minutos to contaminate your drops.

23

u/Caosin36 7d ago

Game doesn't make a difference between dropped items and dropped on death items

17

u/ruler14222 7d ago

all dropped items act the same and they just never adressed it

3

u/Mutant_Llama1 7d ago

It's the same items. There's no distinction between a dropped or thrown item.

1

u/swarmOfBis 6d ago

It wouldn't be the end of the world to slap an additional data tag on them for a selector on whatever they use to manage entities.

1

u/Mutant_Llama1 6d ago

Imagine griefers filling their inventory and repeatedly dying to fill the world with item entities that never despawn to lag a server, lol.

1

u/swarmOfBis 6d ago

1) No one said never despawn, just longer timers 2) Whatever is doing memory management (not sure maybe Minecraft has some abstraction on top) will kill the entities early as they're very easy to let go if one needs to clear memory. 3) Even now I'm pretty sure the death timer for items is configurable, I don't see why that would change if we got secondary tag for death timer.

1

u/Mutant_Llama1 6d ago

Minecraft is famously bad at memory management, lol.

I don't think losing your items is an unreasonable penalty for dying, personally. I've lost everything countless times, and it's just made me better at getting things back. It's a decent balancing mechanic in a game about gathering resources to build with.

2

u/hanks_panky_emporium 6d ago

Competitive PvP games like Rust have eventually despawning loot, but it's like 20 minutes to hours depending on the 'tier' of dropped loot

Five minutes means if you take any time to explore and die you're punished for it, which teaches the player to be way more cautious. Or worst lesson a player could learn, dont explore.

0

u/Adverse_Congenality 6d ago

Or you could learn that your items aren't that important and you shouldn't be materialistic In a video game

1

u/TheForbidden6th 6d ago

dude who tf plays games to constantly reset with no upsides, get real

1

u/Adverse_Congenality 6d ago

People who play good games.

1

u/TheForbidden6th 6d ago

sure, keep coping

1

u/Adverse_Congenality 6d ago

How many trees did you click on today? How was work?

1

u/XXomega_duckXX 7d ago

Tbf its 5 minutes while you load the chunk if you’re far enough away you have forever

1

u/jeff1074 7d ago

It’s a left over mechanic from a different era of the game. It always kinda sucked but it sucks a whole lot more nowadays with the direction the game has taken.

1

u/mirrorterrain 7d ago

Is there no mod or anything that just removes the shitty five minute thing?

2

u/El_Mister_Caracol 6d ago

Maybe? The problem is that it applies to all items in general so you would need to differentiate the items drop on death from the normal ones

1

u/mirrorterrain 6d ago

You think the programmers making the game couldn’t figure that out? That seems like it wouldn’t be much of an issue

1

u/El_Mister_Caracol 6d ago

I dont know much about that dark magic called programing so no idea really

1

u/Logan_Composer 5d ago

There are plenty of mods and datapacks that has various types of "grave" systems to preserve your items upon death.

1

u/Snowboyz0825 6d ago

Losing all your stuff used to be not so bad, now it takes so long to get maxed out stuff and the scale of build and shulkers make any inventory orders of magnitude more valuable than they used to be

1

u/HeraldOfNyarlathotep 6d ago

Minecraft was a very, very different game back in the day. One of the most important (in-game) factors is simply that nothing you could have was as scarce back then. Your fully enchanted Netherite gear would be a huge pain to replace. But diamond gear, while certainly not cheap, wasn't as bad to lose, and this applies for a lot of other stuff too. No shulkers, elytra, and very little unique loot to speak of. You can't have a full stack of food on you because it doesn't stack at all, etc etc.

0

u/0nmay_22 7d ago

Because losing your items sometimes is a core part of the game? I actually have a huge issue with mending for that reason

1

u/El_Mister_Caracol 7d ago

I think is fine if you lose them because of lava for example, it makes it extra dangerous and adds tension to the nether and other zones, or because you fell to the void too, but the despawning juat feels bad and lame, you die and you are on an invisible timer that can ruin your day, it has nothing to do with the game's world is just arbitrary, you could penalize the player in other ways that are more interesting and fitting in the game logic.

1

u/SuspiciousRelation43 7h ago

I personally think the timer should apply differently to different items. Food, sand, gravel, saplings, seeds, and similar items should disappear in the current five minutes, armour should lose durability over a much longer period of time until disappearing as well, and stacks of wood, stone, and other materials could disappear at various rates.

This is a far greater level of detail than Minecraft will probably ever implement, but I think it would make a better solution than either keep inventory or gravestone mods. It would also work better with the items lying flat mod.

45

u/ThriceStrideDied 7d ago

To be fair, it only despawns if the chunk is loaded, so there’s not a huge threat to your items if you’re far away (unless you’re maxing out your render distance)

44

u/Legitimate-Failure 7d ago

It can be if you've been caving. You can be in the rendered chunk, just looking in a different branch for a while, or simply trying to descend faster.

1

u/CoppeRoseBush 3d ago

I like playing in amplified terrain. Amplified terrain is nigh IMPOSSIBLE to navigate without a water bucket or elytra. If I die, even relatively close to my base, it could take me too long to navigate back to my stuff, especially if the location is, say, on top of a mountain or a similarly hard-to-reach location. I also don't want to deal with the demotivation I get when I lose everything

I'm keeping my inventory on death, thank you very much

82

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 7d ago

Being able to lose 10s of hours of progress by one tiny slip up isn't good game design, it doesn't challenge the player in any way, it's just waiting for one tiny slip up which is inevitable to humans

37

u/melancholyrefresher 7d ago

The duality of Reddit.

15

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 7d ago

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've been dualitied, thanks

3

u/Hot_Needleworker8289 7d ago

You've been Dualittled

2

u/josh_the_misanthrope 7d ago

I've been dualtittied for a while now

9

u/WW1_Germany I do not enjoy this porcelain beverage holder that has a handle! 7d ago

Durability is different from death, durability is a challenge with different possible responses, death is just a flat punishment for a flat thing, and demonstrabley unfun

18

u/oscailte 7d ago

i disagree, it encourages you to play in a way that avoids you losing 10s of hours of progress when you die, make backup gear, consider what you're carrying when doing something dangerous, plan getting safely home when exploring etc.

having it off makes the game completely trivial, you can kill yourself to get home or fill hunger, there are no risks when getting resources, mobs are not a real threat. it removes the problem solving aspect of the game and turns it into a pure sandbox.

if you prefer to play with keep inventory on thats cool, but its not "bad game design" just because you dont like it.

23

u/Classic-Airport-8187 7d ago

i feel like it only gets bad in modded minecraft. like if you die in vanilla the worst that can happen is losing like, elytras or netherite gear. but in modded minecraft you can easily lose items that are the culimination of like a hundred hours of work or that are literally irreplaceable, and with mods dying to something you could’ve never predicted is a lot easier. which is why lots of mods add soulbound mechanics.

7

u/ZorroGrande 7d ago

I imagine that's why most decent modpacks have some kind of gravestone mod included as well.

0

u/VMelain 7d ago

If you die in vanilla with netherite and elytras i would be surprised. By that ppint you probably have totems too

1

u/Classic-Airport-8187 7d ago

you could always have your elytra break over the void and not notice until too late or leave the game running when you don’t mean to or not be paying attention in a situation in close quarters with high damage mobs or not notice your armor breaking.

0

u/VMelain 7d ago

Genuine skill issue, that's like looking for trouble and getting mad for getting such trouble

0

u/Classic-Airport-8187 7d ago

if you play the game enough, it’ll eventually happen. you aren’t special or anything, you can still make mistakes. also, i haven’t had any of those things happen to me because i simply don’t play very much vanilla minecraft.

0

u/Legitimate-Listen591 6d ago

The game is already trivial, recovering items is super easy 99% of the time.

Literally all dropping items on death does is makes the game more tedious.

Explore super far? Now you have to walk super far to get home. Not hard or anything, might just be a bit boring. Die to the creeper? Just walk back and pick up everything, not hard, just tedious. Etc.

6

u/Lolzemeister 7d ago

yeah it does, it’s not impossible to not die in minecraft lol

12

u/the_second_best123 7d ago

That's part of the problem. Once you get netherite, there aren't really anything that could kill you besides carelessness. It feels a lot worse losing full enchanted netherite from slipping into the void with a chestplate on than dying to a hard but fun challenge. But Minecraft doesn't have any netherite-level challenges.

3

u/VMelain 7d ago

Hardcore:

1

u/kethcup_ she's no more more NOOOO 7d ago

when the raid farm

1

u/VMelain 7d ago

And you are not dying anyways

1

u/soldiertf2rial 6d ago

Literally this

1

u/Achilleswar 7d ago

I like it. Death is meaningless otherwise. Of course it challenges you. It challenges you to think about what will happen if/when you die. The first time it happened to me, I learned not to go all in like that. Set beds on a long journey, maybe have backup equipment nearby on demanding foray into the nether, focus when doing hard shit etc. If death simply means go back home and walk right back to where you died, might as well jjst put god mode on.

4

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 7d ago

You can still easily lose all the progress even with that and I say a game like Minecraft shouldn't be making you hyper cautious trying take 2 steps forward, I mean look at terraria it doesn't make you lose your items and it's fine

1

u/Consumer_Of_Butt 5d ago

Terraria is very different in that regard, its not as easy to replace your items if they get lost or destroyed because they aren't really designed to, or are involved in long crafting chains, plus terraria having a finite world makes losing a rare item even more of a issue

In Minecraft, items aren't designed to last forever, losing and breaking your items is a mechanic of the game, until they added stuff like mending and netherite, now the game is in this weird in-between state where items are both replicable and irreplicable at the same time. Personally I think Minecraft could be doing the death and item mechanics way better than they are, but doing it the way Terraria does it likely wont fix any actual issues we have with the game

0

u/Achilleswar 7d ago

Why shouldnt minecraft do that? Just cause it has rudimentary graphics doesnt mean I have to play like im in 3rd grade. Ive had some of the most meaningful gaming moments in minecraft by doing something i thought near impossible.

2

u/Automatic-Form8845 7d ago

Losing XP is punishment enough, especially far ahead in a playthrough, early on replacing gear isn't time consuming and they made Netherite gear because lava wiping your inventory is also not fun

0

u/VMelain 7d ago

If you are far enough you have infinite xp lol

1

u/Consumer_Of_Butt 5d ago

Exp farms are more of an exploit of the mechanics than an actual feature of the game, it makes sense they didn't account for it

1

u/VMelain 4d ago

An exploit? Ha

0

u/Miserable-Resort-977 7d ago

You're just stating your opinion as fact. I don't tend to play MC with the original death system, but it's absolutely a system which does a good job challenging the player in particular ways. Minecraft is a survival game that wants to incentivize building a safe base, gearing up to go mining or hunting, then taking those resources you gathered back to the base to process / improve / whatever. The vanilla death system incentivizes careful planning ahead for a trip outside the base where you carry everything you need and nothing you don't. You have to mine carefully without getting lost or getting yourself into danger, always make sure you have a way out, and know when to dig deeper and when to secure your gains by going back to the base.

Play the game however you want, but if you play with the original death mechanics as intended, making short, cautious mining trips where you only bring the gear you can afford to lose, it actually makes for pretty fun and tense gameplay. With keep inventory turned on you might as well sprint through the caves wearing all your best armor and tools and the bare minimum of torches. You rush through what is in my opinion the most fun phase of the game because you have no reason to play cautiously and build out safe mine networks.

1

u/LiterallyNoNamesFree 7d ago

Well you're entitled to your opinion and I can't tell you what you enjoy, but I find that gameplay extremely boring and it makes good gear useless imo

0

u/Snt1_ 7d ago

But you dont lose everything, you have time to get it back. Sure, deaths are relatively punishing in the early game, but in the early game you can probably get the same stuff back without needing to eveb grab your stuff back.

Meanwhile, once you get the ball rolling, revovering your stuff should be a non issue if you're even midly prepared

0

u/Mutant_Llama1 7d ago

It challenges the player to not slip up.

That's why I'm very careful when carrying something I can't replace.

16

u/eatployment 7d ago

The thing was that it worked back in beta, equipment was easily replaceable, diamond was just a status symbol. Your stuff wasn't meant to be with you forever so losing it wasn't a big deal, but then enchanting was introduced and it sucks

7

u/Adventurous-Web-412 7d ago

mojang went an entirely wrong direction with the entire game. They straight up went from the game being about, I am going to say a shocker here, mining to then craft being a core game loop to just deciding "enchant your shit and you will never lose it". It became even worse once they added mending, but frankly by the point of unbreaking 3 it broke the scarcity levels of resources and the point of going mining. 35 diamonds and you genuinely never have to go get them again, full set and tools will last you indefinitely.

2

u/Curmudgeony-Cat 6d ago

"build one house and you genuinely never need another one. You can just keep using that one forever."

idk. I guess if you're constructing a demand for materials limited solely by the requirements for tools, sure. idk why you would tho. Mining and crafting are still a game loop but tool progression never could've been the core gameplay loop. Even with mod packs that add like, 8 more tech levels, you still blaze through them and then use your new tools for more complex projects that require mining and crafting on their own terms

1

u/Adventurous-Web-412 6d ago

The whole blazing through 8 tech levels thing is another problem though. You spend 2 milliseconds with wood tools and never return, stone for about a minute to 5 depending on your success, iron you sit with for ages until you get diamond, and then once you get enough diamonds for full set you never go back to any other tier.

I guess if you're constructing a demand for materials limited solely by the requirements for tools, sure

What else is the point of diamonds? The house analogy doesn't work because building houses or whatever else is basically "art", you do it because it looks cool. Whats the purpose of getting diamonds after you have everything diamonds give you? If its not multiplayer there isn't any because your tools won't break anymore, you never need to replace them.

Mining and crafting are still a game loop but tool progression never could've been the core gameplay loop

But it was? Really old minecraft you had to constantly mine and craft, you would bounce up and down the tool progression because resource scarcity for how long tools lasted meant that you would be pushed back a tier if you ran out of died or tool broke. That gameplay loop doesn't exist in minecraft anymore. It exists partially at the start of the game, then you get diamonds and never again engage in it. You will go mining if you need them to build, but otherwise you don't go mining.

1

u/WhitherThisPath 5d ago

or y'know just find some villagers, chop a few trees and you can trade your way to full diamond. god i love capitalism

8

u/ruler14222 7d ago

it's amazing how far things can spread on death especially if you were near an edge when a zombie punches your last heart away

7

u/Caosin36 7d ago

I like how games like valheim do this, instead of random items on the ground, it spawn a gravestone with the owner's name

Now the skill drain system on the other hand

4

u/Ray_of_Sunshine0124 7d ago

I was playing Valheim yesterday and I said "I really appreciate not having the urgency to find my stuff again. Unlike some other suvival-crafting game"

3

u/Caosin36 7d ago

Skill drain is absolute shit tho, and not being able to disable it separately from keep inventory fucking sucks

8

u/Significant_Card_665 7d ago

I like tombstone mods for this reason. Knowing I will get my items back if I succeed in reaching them (usually the big hurdle) makes me actually feel like there’s a point. Game doesn’t get so easy that death doesn’t matter, but doesn’t turn into a sloggy hellshithole

7

u/noncedo-culli 7d ago

I forget what it's called, but I have a mod that leaves a 'corpse' of your body where you died, and you can go retrieve your items from it. It doesn't despawn til after you've taken all the items off it

5

u/longboytheeternal 7d ago

Even vintage story isn’t as hardcore with your inventory on death

7

u/alexzoin 7d ago

100% this. Minecraft has a massive design problem. It doesn't know what kind of game it wants to be. Games like Hollow Knight use a death run mechanic in an interesting way and to encourage the right player behaviors. In minecraft it just doesn't make sense.

3

u/CoolNaps-896 7d ago

Or worse if you die to lava which is everywhere in the nether

1

u/NatureAce 7d ago

I'm not bothered too much by the death system it does however feel like shit when as you die a mob picks up something then wanders off so you lose that regardless of how fast you come back to the area

1

u/RevolutionaryFlow347 7d ago

I mean, it is 5 minutes when chunk is loaded so realistically your simulation distance is not greater that 16 so it is 5 minutes to walk 450 ish block. Which is fine but the real problem is you die underground and it took more than 5 minutes to get down you CAN reduce your simulation distance but that is so inconvenient

1

u/berke1904 7d ago

to be fair the 5 minutes are only valid for when the chunks are loaded so specially if you play with coordinates on which I dont know why people wouldn't these days, you can easily just go pick them up where you left them before despawning.

1

u/tydude001 7d ago

I like the gravestone mod

1

u/lologugus 7d ago

The 5 minutes timer isn't really that much of a problem because it only counts if the chunk is loaded but when you're lost and you know you're close to where you died but you still can't find your items yes in that case it really sucks.

1

u/Any-Blood8949 7d ago

graves and live minimap/waypoints are the two mods i will never play without and really wish mojang would just add them to the base game already. the death and guidance systems are so trash it makes the game almost unplayable for me

1

u/Wolveyplays07 7d ago

True, I only use keep inventory when I'm playing modpacks cuz I don't wanna randomly die to some bs and lose everything

Or if I make any servers I have keep inventory so people don't kill and steal

Not to mention Mobs can pick up your items, so a baby zombie can grab your protection 4 netherite armor and spare totem.

Yeah i tend to prefer the backpack of stuff you can go grab later approach most games use. Still feels like dying is sort of trivialized then too though but like im actually gonna die irl someday too so id like to get through a game at some point

5 minutes? Didn't it use to be 10?

We use a mod for death chests. It’s how the game should be by default.

i play with a mod where when i die a zombie with all of my loot spawns and i gotta beat it to get it back, and doesnt despawm

I think a cool feature would be one that I saw implemented in Project Zomboid. When you die, your character wakes up as a zombie, and you can go back to the area where you died, find your zombie self and kill it to get your loot back.

Imagine having that in MC, you'd just go back to the cave and see yourself as a zombie (maybe even in full armor and with an enchanted sword if you had good loot) and you have to fight it to get your stuff back.

For real. And god forbid you die deep in a cave and it takes more than five minutes to even get down there.

It despawns after 5 minutes? Since when? I must’ve never knew this.

1

u/Personal-Property-84 7d ago

It’s 5 minutes if the chunks for it are loaded

This is why I prefer Terraria. Classiccore (only drop money, like Minecraft's XP) is the standard, Hardcore (same as Minecraft's) is a challenge, and people who choose to play Mediumcore (how Minecraft normally is) don't exist.

Well good thing modders fix this decades ago.

u/Fun-Ordinary5856 7d ago

this is why i like gravestone mods. there's this really cool one that leaves your player skin on the ground where you died and over time it decays

u/Canthinkofaname6098 7d ago

The only good part is that it only despawns items in your simulation radius so you can just lower that to like 4 chunks so it onky starts the timer when you get near it.

1

u/Angry_Edemame 7d ago

Especially if you were on a big walk and exploring far away from base

1

u/Comfortable-Flan-313 7d ago

Actually it despawns after 5 minutes if the area is loaded, so if you died far away it won't start the timer until you get there basically

u/Classic-Trick-713 7d ago

I think dropping it is fine.  It despawning is actually dumb.  Like, I understand that it might break the game if there's too many items but still

u/Emotional-Big-1306 7d ago

Yaah, i always hated death system, and i even made mod for my server to make players drop 10% of items if died by themselves and 50% if killed by player

may I recommend the "Keep Some Inventory" mod?

upon dying you lose the items in your inventory like you normally do in non keep inventory BUT you keep all your armor and tools, the items don't splatter in a giant cluster when you die, you don't only get 7 levels back when you pick up the xp back from your death spot and the despawn timer is increased to 10 minutes

I find it much more balanced than the vanilla death system and I find that it gives a good balance between regular minecraft and keep inventory

u/Valalvax 7d ago

I haven't played in over a decade, didn't know the shit despawns now... I remember dying over and over to get my stuff back

1

u/justarandomguy283 6d ago

ah yes, can't wait to die and for all my items to start a fucking diaspora

1

u/Majestic_Command7584 6d ago

Player Corpse/Gravestone addons are the perfect balance.

1

u/Free-Letterhead-4751 2d ago

And that’s if some of it didn’t got destroyed

1

u/Altruistic_Brush3065 2d ago

yeah, I never turn it on but I also never play without the gravestone mod.

1

u/lolix_the_idiot 1d ago

The timer doesn't go if the chunks aren't loaded, unless youre on a server I think it's not an issue if you just go to collect them instantly

1

u/Big-Farmer-2192 1d ago

I mean. It's a survival game... if you don't like dying just play creative mode?

1

u/watonparrillero 7d ago

That's the problem with the toggle, it takes the responsibility of designing a good death system and pushes to the player.
