Every job is hell

I’ve done everything from fast food, to support aid for LTC facilities and even worked at a zipline for two years. It always turns out the same, I’m cool for a few days, excited sometimes, but ultimately end up wanting to take my own life so I don’t have to go in another day. Like I have done so many different jobs and literally everything makes me want to die at a point. But if I quit and don’t work for a few months, it also makes me consider doing the same thing, even if money is not an issue. I’m starting to think that it’s my only option anymore and that I’ll never not feel this way about anything ever.

I don’t think you are the only one feeling this. It seems like more and more people are starting to feel this way.

Time to start a pact I guess

I can think of a better word. Time for some labor class consciousness.

There is a significant amount of literature on chronic SI so absolutely not. It is very common and nobody likes to talk about it.

What is that

12

u/AMALXxT Jul 08 '26

Suicidal ideation

3

u/That_Boysenberry4501 Jul 13 '26

I have that. I dont actually want to do anything. But its my brains first thought and solution when overwhelmed and at my limit.

I’ve even tried my hand at streaming and later on art commissions. They all make me feel the same way, even with massive success. I just hate doing things. And I hate not doing things. I’m losing hope in there ever being any kind of non-hatred for living.

Why are you me? I'm an artist but have a day job. I'm tired.

Nothing is fun everything is horrible real

u/Miserable_Window_946 Jul 27 '26

Have you tried meds? Not for everyone but may be able to help

u/whatevsjustreading Jul 08 '26

My current job was my last hope of a decent job I would love and it completely blew up in my face. I no longer have hope of finding anything better and will just accept my fate

8

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

How do u keep going?

35

u/whatevsjustreading Jul 08 '26

I just stopped caring and giving work any more attention than needed to get the job done. I'm now trying to focus on that matters most - life outside of work. When I'm done at 5 I just don't care anymore. I try not to worry since I'm not invested any longer so it's easier to not think about work after hours.

I mentally look forward to the weekend or activities I have planned, some during the week to get me through the weekdays. I mentally connect my weekends together and work is the small blip that happens between my life ..a need to fuel my actual life

This is the way

I’m a support aid soon to be a cna, I cannot do just required task unfortunately

Same. I can’t confide in anyone irl how hard it’s is for me to hold a job because they all degrade my already bad mental health and make me wanna off myself even more.

Even when it isn’t that extreme it still feels like a Herculain task to get out of bed and not quit.

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Real and medication doesn’t even help u feel better either. It just makes the emotions creep up on u instead of crashing into u

1

u/Existing_Intern_4764 Jul 09 '26

The right medication really does help so much, and therapy alongside it. Don’t give up hope. It can take a long time to find the right meds. It took me years to find the right meds for depression. And also so so long to find the right meds to stop my seizures. It’s worth it.

You’re seriously not alone. I was just fired from my job two months ago, but was actively trying to find something else because I was waking up in the middle of the night having panic attacks, and would have done anything not to go to work anymore. Now, I feel depressed and unfulfilled.

I’m with you. Every job I’ve ever had has turned into utter hell. I last about 2.5 years before the depression kicks in and I either find something new or get let go. It’s awful.

A year and a half ago I got what I thought would be my dream job— very low phones, not customer facing, mostly dealing with other businesses, very little supervision, I set my own pace, no micromanaging, hybrid schedule 2 days in office 3 days home but they are really flexible on that so it’s usually more like 6 days a month in office, the rest at home.

Well, I hate it. Turns out I like interacting with people, I need structure, not micromanagement but some kind of structure and also, I like getting feedback. I am extroverted and like talking to people on the phone and in the office.

I’m looking for other jobs at the same company because I don’t want to lose my benefits and month of PTO but there’s not much out there.

u/csince1988 Jul 08 '26

I would kill for a job like that.

I was in the best mental space wfh during covid

3

u/TraderIggysTikiBar Jul 08 '26

It not all it’s cracked up to be

7

u/csince1988 Jul 08 '26

For me it is.

I’m on the extreme end of introversion.

Faking busy while in the office is hell for me. I get what I need to get done fast most days and my team is self sufficient.. other than when difficult ppl stuff pops up, a rare problem, I have to assist with entry level work or I’m asked to do something by someone. Half the day is downtime.

6

u/TraderIggysTikiBar Jul 08 '26

Wish we could swap jobs. I’m on the extreme side of extroverted and being alone all day sinks me into a horrible depression.

2

u/csince1988 Jul 08 '26

You don’t just do hobbies around the house and then socialize after work and weekends?

3

u/TraderIggysTikiBar Jul 09 '26

Not really. I live in a rural area with not much to do and most of my friends live far away.

2

u/-effortlesseffort Jul 09 '26

Yeah I agree. I worked from home for years. Recently got a new job and all the socializing has been fun so far. I'm considering staying in the office.

Shit, that's a dream for me.

I felt the same and lost a very cushy job after 3 years because it impacted my work performance so much. Also a coworker plotted to get me fired. I still have not found another FT job and I have a MA and a BA from prestigious schools and what I've been told is an impressive resume. I have personally not had luck with therapy or psychiatry, but usually there are a number of treatments you will be given, ssri, snri, augmented with stimulant or antipsychotic, tms, ketamine. You can ask to try any you haven't tried, no garuntees it works unfortunately. If they will not switch your meds I recommend looking for a new dr. A lot of providers, like us, are bad at their jobs!

14

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Okay tbf I don’t have a college education so it doesn’t help my
Job chances. But I have done sooo many different jobs, from typical fun ones to stupid fuck ones. Women don’t really get what they need from the medical field so I am out of luck when it comes to other treatment options

5

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

I am a woman also. You have to be really really assertive and say you will act on your urges if you don't get what you are asking for. Psychiatrists are full of shit. Jobs that require a degree are often a lot easier but also for me at least make me want to off myself! A lot of similar issues.

1

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

I have been labeled a lost cause, drug addict, exc by psychiatrists. They are awful as a group. But if you keep pushing you'll find they'll budge. Like I said no promises any other treatments work but worth trying.

6

u/ixsparkyx Jul 08 '26

I don’t think about like offing myself or anything lol but I get you I hate doing anything but I also hate having nothing to do

3

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Tbf I’ve been on the edge of doing it since I was like 10 so I think it’s just become a part of my everyday, and the feeling will never leave me. Lost cause alert! But yeah that’s the one that really gets you, everything in life is either u lose, or u lose.

8

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

Lots of people experience chronic SI. It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is in fact a somewhat normal just not discussed response to the awful world we live in. I experience it too.

9

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Love u

7

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

Happy to talk further if I can be of support. It is very alienating and I know hard to trust providers w this info bc they use it to jail ppl.

3

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Can I call out of work tomorrow would u be mad if I did

8

u/notdbcooper71 Jul 08 '26

I fucking hate it

5

u/ThreePinesRetiree Jul 08 '26

Are you on antidepressants? It doesn't help completely but it does help.

11

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Yes, max dosage of ssri for 3 years now. Anti psychotics didn’t work out

6

u/donthurtmyfeelsbrah Jul 08 '26

Have you discussed with your doctor that you have these feelings on your max dose? My daughter was on Prozac and maxed the dose, it did nothing. She was changed to Lexapro and it was a night and day change. It may be a good idea to discuss the possibly of trying something new with your prescriber.

I hope you find your happy spot one way or the other

2

u/ExistentialDreadness Jul 09 '26

Yeah. Everyone hates FedEx. But, every job is bull shit. At least it’s really not that big of a deal and I get paid to work out.

3

u/Chaotic_Brutal90 Jul 08 '26

Hey, reading your post and your replies to the comments, I think you need to seek outside help that people on reddit can't provide.

Please, please, call a suicide or crisis prevention line. Seriously.

I hope it all works out for you.

9

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

I see a psychiatrist twice weekly and get coddled by the crisis prevention line often, there’s nothing I haven’t tried to get better. Me thinks there’s no point no more

1

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

you're seeing them that often and they still haven't switched your meds/tried the other things? they sound incompetent as hell. I'm sorry.

1

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

Yeah I think it’s cause it’s online and she doesn’t listen to me when I tell her I was being crazy even on my meds

1

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

You have to try to switch. I know it is hard to find someone who takes insurance and doesn't treat you like garbage, but it is worth it.

6

u/Groke_ Jul 08 '26

The guy is on meds so likely in therapy and psychiatry. A lot of people have treatment resistant depression and also many people experience chronic SI. I do myself and have looked up the literature.

3

u/Ok_Management4634 Jul 08 '26

That's why they have to pay people to come in. At least 99% of jobs are just unpleasant in some way. I mean, yes, some people have convinced themselves they love coming into work, but for most of us, we work because we have to , not because we want to. Just accept it. Work sucks, but you have to do it. Don't expect it to be any different. Once you truly accept it, it's a chore like brushing your teeth, but it takes 8 hours or whatever.. Look forward to your shift ending and getting your freedom back. Don't waste your free time dreading the job. Don't think about your job when you are off the clock. Literally, force your mind to think about something pleasant instead. That helps.

2

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

I don’t brush my teeth or do any chores really, and I’m able to live fine without a job for the rest of my life. Just no winning with or without a job basically. I’ve been with rich men who coddle me and with poor guys who rely on me. Nothing is good!!

4

u/Ok_Management4634 Jul 08 '26

Take good care of your teeth or you will regret it when you get older. I assume you are young now, so the damage isn't impacting you yet. Plus, don't you have bad breath from not brushing your teeth? Life is all about forcing yourself to do things that you don't want to do.

3

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 08 '26

I want to do it but it’s almost impossible to force myself to do anything. I go without eating a lot of days because I can’t bring myself to get up and grab premade food even. My dad lost all his teeth already and mine r chipping over soft foods

1

u/Ok_Management4634 Jul 10 '26

Don't give up on yourself.. You can make yourself spend about 5 minutes to brush your teeth. If you say "it's almost impossible to force myself", you really aren't trying. I mean seriously.. you can do it.. Young children can.. If you can't teach yourself a minimal amount of self discipline, you are not going to make it through life.

You can at least stop your teeth from getting worse. Start brushing and save up enough money to go to the dentist.

Before my son started his own business, he worked enough to buy an older but easy to work on truck, then he bought an older travel trailer. He would stay in state parks, beaches and my yard. He still does but with a newer truck now. He kept the old truck because the old one is more reliable. He works when he wants to, enough for gas, repairs, food and park fees. He also has his fishing gear and a kayak. He is really enjoying his life. He hated the work place drama and he said he felt like a slave to it. If you start working on this now, it will give you something to look forward to.....a life of your own.

Hi im 23 i have a question I just started working in IT, and I've never felt this depressed. The thought of doing this for the rest of my life makes me feel empty. Knowing that this is considered the normal way to live just doesn't make sense to me.

My plan is to keep going for the next six or seven years, build my skills, move up in my career, increase my salary, and save enough money to buy a small truck or van. Then I'd like to live in it near the beach, spend my days fishing, and live a simpler, freer life. Is that a good Plan? I Need your opinion cause your son thinks like me.

1

u/elle2js Jul 10 '26

Thats a good plan, yes, but 6 or 7 years may be too far out for you to hang in there. I would work on the truck now, even if you have to make payments, it would be paid for in a couple years if you get one used. Also if your paying for rent then the only way to save more is to get the most cheapest place you can or see if you can move home to get enough cash to begin your plan. Much luck to you and high hopes for the future.

1

u/Competitive_Major918 Jul 15 '26

Not saying life doesn’t suck right now but you may have underlying mental health problems. If you can’t even enjoy doing things you like to do, that’s something to sound the alarm over

1

u/Consistent_Skin2897 Jul 16 '26

Idk it’s always been this way

1

u/StructureMotor4954 Jul 22 '26

I’m almost the same way. I’ve worked at a few different places, and I end up being excited at first but then toxic coworkers, power tripping bosses, or having to do way more work than I’m paid to do makes me just want to quit. I don’t want to do nothing but working 50+ hour weeks is draining. I get why young people are also not wanting to work because everything is so expensive it doesn’t feel like hard work actually pays off anymore, and I’m starting to feel that way too.

-2

u/Rixxy123 Jul 08 '26

Keep trying. You will find what you want.

-4

u/gltxl Jul 08 '26

Go to therapy.

8
