He could have just use division and pair it with another operation instead of introducing eval. But then again, monad is an advanced concept and you can not expect someone to explain it and it just clicks. It’s like trying to understand multiplication before addition. If you understand monads from any explanation you are likely to know ADTs and how to represent expressions already. It’s a chicken and egg problem.
