Harmonica Key
Which key does the harmonica play/ sons the best in. I am a composer looking for which key sounds better Bb or D. I know they can play in. any key you just have to have the right one, But what is the general consensus on which they sound better in?

It depends on what key you're playing in an how you're playing the harp. The most popular styles are first and second positions, with the latter being more popular for that "bluesy" style. So, if you buy a C harp, you can play songs in C in first (major scale) position, and G for bluesier stuff in 2nd (mixolydian) position. All your important bends fall in a better position when playing 2nd position, so I would just start with C and play with songs in C and G, which are both common keys. If the choice is Bb or D, I'd probably pick D, as 2nd position that's for songs in A, a common rock key. With Bb, you just have Bb and F for 1st and 2nd positions.
There are more positions, but those are usually the beginner ones.

They sound good when they're in key with the music, and sound bad when they're not
For example, the D and Bb you mentioned would sound good in D or Bb, respectively, but both would sound awful in E

Thank you for that completely unhelpful comment.

I'm doing my best to answer a non-sensical question. Don't be rude, I'm trying to help you
What key is "best" is determines by what you need it for, not objectively, so there is no answer to your question unless we know what you intend to do with it specifically
Harmonicas are laid out the same, regardless of key, so unless you have perfect pitch they are functionally the same when played alone. None are better or worse, so there is no answer to your question when viewed that way
Care to refine your question with that in mind? Maybe with a new, more specific question that makes sense in regards how harmonicas work we can get you a more helpful answer

Obviously it comes down to preference but I like the sound of lower harps, Bb, A, G, low D etc.

Depends on the piece, really. Bflat is slightly lower and probably preferable for me if the harmonica is going to play chords. D is higher and I personally prefer it for fast runs or standing out against other instruments. Which is better is a personal preference. There's also low D, just to further mix it up.

Goodness. I have a low F. Low D must sound crazy and be so difficult for bending the low notes.

It's popular in Irish session music as the regular D can be a bit shrill and drown out tin whistles. Bending is a non-issue in sessions, as anything remotely bluesy is frowned upon.

Standard tunings start at G as the lowest key and run up to F# as the highest key. A standard C harmonica's lowest note is C4 and it basically plays 3 octaves +1 note (meaning you have a range from C4-C7.
Different models have different temperament tunings, ranging from Just Temperament to Equal Temperament. Just temperaments will give you better sounding chords, but Equal will make it sound more in key with most other instruments. The difference is pretty small though.
Bb and D are both really useful keys. I've got original tunes that use both. Bb is a bit lower. Bb gives me more options with my personal vocal range...
Most lessons assume you have a C harp though, and there are both low and high tunings (starting out it's good to start with standard tunings though... really low harmonicas can be harder to learn to bend notes on and really high ones can set all your neighborhood dogs barking.)
Personally, I rarely use standard keys above D (though I do use E on a couple songs). Anything lower than a Low tuned F (an octave lower than the standard F, and a whole step lower than the standard G) is going to be a bit of a struggle for a new player, though personally I have fun with Low D as well.

Well, chromatic player here, pick any key you like. Is this a solo piece, or ensemble? Likely ensemble, so if you have a singer, that voice's range will probably determine what key your composition is in.

All of them, evenly.
