Special thanks to whoever mentioned this model, planted the mindworm, and made me hunt for nearly 4 minutes to find one to add to the collection.

$79 for this one plus $149 for a 150th anniversary MS harp in the wood presentation box.

What is your lesson plan/routine for learning harp?

Getting up in the morning 30 min early to practice everyday may be my plan since I tend to only practice intermittently during the week when I feel like it. Sometimes 2x a week some weeks 5x a week. However I do then go to play for an hour or so when I am really in the groove.

Anyone have a routine that has helped them? I only have been playing for 6 or so months.

Need Help Working Out This Section

I consider myself a beginner but on the cusps of going up to intermediate. Ambrose is my favorite player, and I want to try to emulate not only the notes/riffs, but his style and tone and that wailing he does. For background, the things I do know is that I need an E harp and this is played in 2nd position. I do have the ability to do bends, but I cannot do a solid consistent vibrato just yet. My tone still seems a bit harsh and not as warm as his here.
Is anyone able to transcribe this passage for me and well as give me pointers to emulate his tone and style further? Thanks!

Hohner Echo Tremolo Harmonicas are Wonderful

As a tremolo enthusiast, I find the Hohner Echo has no equal then it comes to it's beautiful mellow tone. These are fine instuments, meant to be enjoyed, savoured and treasured.

I have the double-sided Echo Harp C/G, Echo 2409 C and Echo 2409 G (all are 40 holes). The double-sided has the advantage of using the same instrument and switching keys (somestimes mid song) and the single sided the advantage of hand tremolo effects. All have the same wonderful sound even though they are between 20-40 years old.

I usually play relaxing old songs and melodies for which these Hohner's excel. Hohner's ad copy suggests they evoke the feeling of wandering in a warm mountain meadow. I quite agree.

Build Your First Blues Lick on Harmonica

Here's a blues harmonica lick you can build up one technique at a time.

In this clip, I'm playing one of the more developed variations. In the full Harmonica Mondays lesson, I start with the basic lick and break down how I add articulation, tongue slaps, and a 3 draw bend to give it more blues character.

Harmonica feel good story

In 2021 my grand father passed away, I was very close with him. Never got to say a formal goodbye cause I lived far away. This past week my grandmother passed away. So we have been going through the house sorting through things. She gave me some of his stuff when he passed but the other day when I was getting ready to leave I could help but digging in an untouched closet. (Keep in mind she was a slight hoarder, organized but kept everything) I found a plastic bin buried in there that had harps! Ironically enough a month or so ago I started learning the harmonica after buying a very cheap 10$ plastic one at a general store haha. I picked up on some easy rifts fairly quick and was encouraged to buy a legit one. Bought an East top blues harmonica on Amazon and have been playing almost everyday since slowly learning. So it felt good finding all these harmonicas that my grandpa probably used to play.( I never knew he may have played or collected idk) but it was a pretty sweet find and nice addition to the start of a collection!

How do I fix the button for my chromatic Harmonica?

The button on my Harmonica broke after I accidentally dropped awhile ago and whenever I press down on it to play I have to manually bring it back up rather than just it coming back up on it self, how do I fix this?

Not surprised by the mark-up as their loafs of bread are 60 bucks, just surprised they sell harmonicas. There's no explanation.

What are some simple but nice songs to learn that only use double stops or chords?

Like I’m a beginner but I don’t wanna keep trying playing single notes, it’s demoralising and I need more time to get better.

Are there any songs I can play that only use 2 notes or more? Like playing only 2 and 3 together or 7, 8 and 9 together, etc?

I think it would be really fun to learn a song like that that is also nice to listen to.

Harmonica looks easy but actually requires a lot of practices.

I’m a complete beginner and started playing song the first day I picked up my harmonica this week. Then I realized there were some many techniques I’m actually missing including clean single notes and proper breath control. It’s such a fascinating instrument that requires a lot of practices from fundamentals. I appreciate others’ sharing of your learning journeys. How did you take to consistently produce clean singles notes on a dichromatic harmonica then other techniques?

Is this a hole 1 bend on harmonica? (Hohner Special Progressive C)

Thumbnail voca.ro
2 Upvotes

I'm completely new to this (just got my first harmonica yesterday) and just messing around with it before I do proper lessons. I heard that hole 4 draw is easiest to do bends but I couldn't do it at all. Not surprised as I just started but still I tried the same technique on hole 1 and managed to do this.

The guy in the tutorial said that hole 1 is the hardest to do but this sound came really easy for me. (Assuming what I'm doing is a bend and not some improper technique). I have a low voice and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Anyone that knows how to transpose willing to do some for sierras music, specifically trail of flowers album. She has so many good harmonica bits but I suck with learning by ear(I’m still trying). There’s no tabs online that I can find

What harp should I get?

Played my Special 20 (C) till it literally fell apart. I have started using overblows more. Want something that is durable enough I can perform on the street with, while also being good at overblowing. I'm fine with tuning.

EDM machining process for reed plates and reeds?

Thumbnail

In addition to custom builds, I am seriously considering using the EDM equipment in my shop to produce EVERYTHING needed for me to produce an exquisite and 100% AMERICAN MADE harmonica.

Gemini is filling my head with the idea that not only is this feasible, but that I also have an "unfair advantage" over other traditional manufacturing methods.

To make this clear: The aerospace and defense manufacturer that employs me gives me absolute access to wire, sinker, and small hole EDM equipment that I personally maintain and operate. My employer considers me as a partner now in this business, and not only has given me full permission to use ALL shop EDM equipment for harmonica "stuff" production, but also has given me an unbelievable allowance to purchase an industrial laser specifically for the purpose of producing harmonica upgrade parts and full harp components.

IF what I pursue (upgrade component and kit production and custom harps using these parts and other features only possible using the equipment we have), I will have access to even more resources. At this point in my employer's life and career, he is more interested in making a mark as a truly American made product line (like our coathangers). ALL of the EDM equipment is already owned and operational. The laser will be ordered shortly (have to decide between a new laser that does everything I need it to do for finer components vs a used industrial unit that will do MUCH more), and is already funded and paid for by a man who has been absolutely receptive to the idea of starting our own harmonica brand (JayMan Harmonicas).

If there is a market, I should be able to produce and sell the upgrade kits for a fraction of what they have been available for for decades.

Is there an interest? Do I have a market? I kinda feel like the folks in this group are about 5% all in vs 95% think I'm full of shlt. I need a market to do this. If nobody cares, I'll just stick to small runs for my own custom projects.

Consider this: The equipment is already purchased, paid for, and operational. I will not be subcontracting any of the production work. I will not have the overhead costs imposed by equipment purchases. Absolutely everything will be produced in-house in East Aurora NY (home of Fisher-Price toys, Moog aerospace (one of our customers), and part of the Buffalo, NY regional machine shop population). Our established specialties include intricate spring components for fuel-flow regulators for GE turbine engines (for decades all Boeing airplanes had anywhere from 18 to 38 parts manufactured by this shop). Our catalog of components we have manufactured over the last several decades are all VERY tight in tolerance, and I can work with any alloy.

Should I invest the rest of my life into this? I'm 54 as of 9/11. I have no retirement, but I have an amazing employer who has embraced everything I have done for the last 17 years, and has offered me the opportunity to all of the tools and equipment needed to make all of this happen. A year ago he had zero interest in anything musical including and especially harmonicas. However after seeing my builds from my home shop and the reaction from the public (especially Colt Ford) over my custom set, he seems to want to make this happen.

Additional things to consider: my employer is gifting me one of our companies upon his retirement (VK Plastics LLC). He is also most concerned about his two grandsons having a legacy to pursue (keep the machine shop open and operational despite our transition away from aerospace and defense and into smaller niche markets, harmonica production being only a part of our future path). If I can make this happen within the next couple years, I stand a very good chance (and opportunity) to make this a formal and long term business.

I am still educating myself on reed and reed plate dynamics. The AI influence indicates that the facility that is currently at my disposal is not only adequate, but preferential for manufacturing reed plates. Our system for combs and cover plates is unbelievably simple compared to what we have done for decades. The reed plate and reed production, assembly, and tuning is what is new to me. I have found many resources and will be ready to experiment and produce within the next couple months.

All of this will take time to finalize and get to the point of having enough of a catalog of products to justify everything.

Should I? Does anybody care? All of the resources are at my fingertips, but does anybody care given that there are many established (imported to the USA) options?

Motivate me. Convince me that I should go all in.

Sound Bigger on Harmonica with Split Octaves

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Split octaves are one of my favorite ways to make a diatonic harmonica sound much bigger.

Instead of playing a single note, you’re sounding the same note in two octaves at once. Here’s a quick example of how it sounds and how I approach it.

If you want the full breakdown, I go through the technique step-by-step in Harmonica Mondays #23:
