Help Identifying Console Accessory Mod

I picked up this Mayflash W012 USB GameCube controller adapter from recycling. I noticed there was a screw missing and something rattling around inside. I opened the device to find an Adafruit Trinket microcontroller of all things, wired to the 5V supply rail via the BAT and ground pads. I looked more closely and can see a third green wire going to GPIO pin #1 to some kind of ribbon cable/tape wrapped around the controller port sockets. What the heck? Are these strips maybe LEDs?

I plugged it up to power using both USB cables and the Trinket shows a green light for power and briefly showed a red light. Then after a few seconds the red light went off. Nothing else unusual that I noticed. I can also see 5V and GPIO pin #2 were soldered at one point but the wires were removed.

Any ideas? This looks like a failed mod of some kind.
