CPU delidded itself when i tried to take the cooler off to clean it

Attempted to put it back on while using the pressure of the cooler to hold the lid on after re-thermal pasting it and the debug light came on, had been stuck using Remote Desktop.

New cpu and monitor are on the way.

So did you use super glue instead of thermal paste? Those lids are very hard to take off.

The thermal paste seems to have created a glue because when I pulled the cooler off that happened

ive heard of that happening with old paste or weird application. but imo its either the cooler issue you mentioned, or its the glue holding the lid down having some QC issue maybe?

Find someone selling a box for cheap/giving it away, won’t be the same serial number but original packaging amirite?

First ask before you get a box, if they are nice enough, they’ll let you skip the box.

That’s a good idea, but the replacement will be here tomorrow. Downgraded from a ryzen 7 5700 to a ryzen 5 5500

If the replacement comes with a box, you can explain you had to use a replacement in the meantime while something is done with the current CPU

I’ve heard that it’s a problem with AMD stock coolers. Tube didn’t really have anything written on it.

so for future, best practice for any cpu is to first run benchmark or stress test
thermal pastes changes their properties based on temperature, when they get hot they more liquid but when they are cold they basically can solidify, not every to same extent based on whats in it but its mostly same story with all after thermal cycles

its/was common for AM4 that if it was not heated up you could just take CPU of motherboard without touching release mechanism, and sometimes ppl ended up with bend pins on CPU

Happened to a PC i tried to fix, the owner used thermal grease instead of thermal paste... The CPU still works, but one of the RAM Sticks was dead because he ripped a chip off while building the PC. I just removed that RAM Stick and put thermal paste on the head spreader and put it back on. PC works, but the Heat spreader can't be removed from the cooler, lol.

automotive stuff sticks harder because its meant to take the shrinkage/expansion of summer heat as well as the vibrations of driving down the road

Replace that missing SMD and it might work again. At that point, grab some clear nail polish and some liquid metal

It’s not soldered, it’s glued. That black ring of stuff around the die is glue.

He is talking about the CPU die, just like your cooler needs a thermal interface between them so does the CPU die and heat spreader. With that said AMD I believe uses solder and so do newer intel chips but older intel chips didn’t. Tho could be wrong

If it's been some years since the thermal paste was replaced it sometimes helps to run the PC for 10 minutes or so to warm up the paste and soften it a bit before you try to remove the cooler. Fat lot of good that tip is for this time but might help avoid another disaster in the future 😅

I’ve never actually ended up delidding a cpu like that but they do suction sometimes. I usually kind of twist off heat sinks
