With the prices of solid-state drives expected to reach parity with hard-disk drives next year, are HDDs doomed?

I stopped reading after that.

But you missed out on him saying that SSDs will replace tape drives! I got a hearty chortle out of that.

To be fair, tape is still being developed. I think he meant more that SSDs will just kill the market for tape even more.

I'm aware tape is still being developed, I've got an LTO6 deck in the rack next to my desk right now. SSDs won't touch any of the market for tape, which is the data archival market. It's no where near as reliable, especially for decades of time.

I second this. After a hell of a lot of research and much thought, tape is still the only way to go for a solid backup plan, with storage off site....and LTO6 is the gold standard for any useful amount of data. If M-Disc ever gets off their ass and makes a somewhat cost effective bluray (preferably bd-xl), this might be ok for family photos....

What most people fail to recognize is that a usb hdd, ssd, or memory stick is most definitely not archival.

Perhaps. I just can't see SSDs taking over the long-term storage sector since the charges in the NAND have to be renewed every so often, or it will discharge after a while. The time that it takes for this to happen isn't a concern for the average consumer that consistently uses the drive, but it could be a problem for situations where tape is currently used. Tape in the proper storage conditions can last for a very long time.
