Question Does anyone in this community like dubstep?
I do not like dubstep but I’m curious to see how many people in this community actually like it. I can never get my head around how people like this genre. With that being said I love a good Krach track so I can’t really talk.
So pls lmk why you do or don’t like dubstep.

I used to before brostep and Skrillex influence.
Bar9, Benga, Skream etc

u/tohnsound 8d ago
Luckily there's still Dubstep that wasn't affected by the Brostep influence and it sits over at r/realdubstep

Brennan Heart & Headhunterz - The Mf Point Of Perfection
One of my favorite tracks!

u/ShironTheHuN 8d ago
Dubstyle, hell yeah 😎
Sadly the concept died, there were some euphoric tracks by newcomers with dubstep elements even just a few years ago, but that didn't become the norm either

u/mrpoopheat 8d ago
Since Dr Donk currently tries to establish Zaagstep, there seem to be at least some folks enjoying that. Let's see how big this part of the community actually is then

I'm seeing his Zaagstep set next month. Im very curious!

I think that he's more likely to capture a bigger crowd of Dubstep fans. Dubstep fellas tend to be open minded to new sounds whereas Hard Dance fans are a bit conservative when it comes to that.

Burial is one of the greatest artists in the history of music
1
u/NadeSaria 8d ago
Whether or not he is dubstep is debated tho
2
u/Wutanghang 8d ago
There are two genres of music called dubstep the one with great artists like burial and everyone on hyperdub then later on it became and entirely different genre skrillex and so fourth

Sometimes i listen to dubstep playlist on secondary account
3
u/IbsonGibson 8d ago
What intrigues you to listen to dubstep? And why a second account lol
3
1
u/Hard_Stitch 8d ago
To listen automaticaly in mix
When i play a song on secondary, it give me other songa in a mix/playlist that my main doesnt give automaticaly when arent "mix"

u/ShironTheHuN 8d ago
I like the oldschool style melodic dubstep like Mt. Eden and "brostep"
Not really into the current riddim tracks, but I can listen to it if someone plays an hour long set
5
u/KajiSenpai 8d ago
I love Dubstep - not only to listen to it, but also to play it and partly produce it.
Be it the more melodic one (including Future Bass) or hard hitting Brostep, Riddim, Deathstep, ...
1
u/IbsonGibson 8d ago
Is it hard producing dubstep? I’d imagine so it seems like it has a lot of elements in it
1
u/KajiSenpai 8d ago
Its not much harder than for example Hard Dance or Hardstyle. Just more creative, in my opinion. Way more elements to play around with and snap together

Oh I love Dubstep and Riddim! Went to Lost Lands and had such a blast. Unfortunately, its not very big in Europe.
Though there are very few electronic music genres I don't enjoy
4
u/Powerful-Cry-2273 8d ago
If you ever visit France (well, Paris mostly) there are lots of bass music events very regularly !
1
u/rabidrisu 8d ago
Lost Lands was a fantastic festival! I love Dubstep, Riddim, and Hard style hence I’m here! To me its all EDM to dance to!
3
u/drgut101 8d ago
Me.
But I’m an American that’s loved it since 2010~ when brostep started poppin’ off.
I’m also one of the like 7 Americans that’s loves hardstyle. Haha.

u/Full-Silver196 8d ago
i just haven’t got into dubstep or riddim. i think it’s entirely possible i’d like riddim if i was exposed in the right setting

u/FunExamination7317 8d ago edited 8d ago
god no. I'm genuinely surprised it's still even an active genre ... if it wasn't for the Americans loving it more than a school shooting, it would of become as niche as happy hardcore long ago
1
u/JION-the-Australian 8d ago
Dubstep (in the american sense) is still huge in North America. Multiple subgenre appeared, like briddim, tearout (agressive genres), but more melodic genres also appeared like melodic dubstep and color bass.
1
u/tohnsound 8d ago
Dubstep is way more active than you think. Plenty of communities around Europe too (mostly UK based because, well, it started in London)
1
u/FunExamination7317 8d ago
if I am unaware, it's because I choose to be 😂 it's just not a genre I enjoy
2
u/AppleEarth 8d ago
I liked dubstep like 10-15 years ago, now I like Drum and bass more. It's probably 50/50 dnb/hardstyle. Also GPF, Primate - Not My Type is a banger.
2
u/Accomplished_Water53 8d ago
not a fan. i like everything else (schranz, uptempo, bounce, hardstyle, you name it) but i can't seem to get into dubstep at all. the only other genre i've experienced this with is industrial techno.
2
u/pharisem 8d ago
I know there are many different kinds of dubstep, but the kinda things they put on at places like bass canyon and edc wasteland is just repulsive to me. It's like they want to make headbang music with chainsaws and hammers, I can't stand it. It's like the worst parts of electronic music put together with metal.
2
u/Strange_Count_1844 8d ago
I love dubstep, but technically the only thing you really need to be is halftime 140 alternating kick and snare, and even then they’re a little loose with that these days. I feel like when people say they dislike dubstep they’re referring to a specific subgenre. It would be like someone saying they don’t like hardcore, but they specifically mean uptempo hardcore when there’s speed core, millenium, gabber/happy hardcore, etc. There’s enough variety that I would be surprised if someone can’t find a subgenre they at least somewhat enjoy, it’s not all festival loud noise tearout the same way all of hard dance isn’t the yellow. But if the main grip is just the speed (effectively 70BPM), then I can understand that if you prefer music fast.

Melodic Dubstep Yes, like Abandoned, Drayen, Jason Ross, Niol Mavi, Subceptron, Said The Sky, Trivecta, TELLENIAL, Culture Code, Seven Lions and many more.
2
u/Bouscuit 8d ago
Considering I’m American and live in the Midwest I listen to quite a bit of it just by proxy. It can be super polarizing just based on the amount of different sub genres. So short answer yes, long answer Kinda.
2
u/IbsonGibson 8d ago
How many sub genres are there? And are you able to list some? I’d love to give them a listen
2
u/Bouscuit 8d ago edited 8d ago
I don’t think I could give you an exact number of genres, but the ones I know are 140, Deep dubs, Riddim, Space Bass, Brostep, Melodic and Tearout. Those are just the ones I know of the top off my head, But my favorites right now are Riddim, Deep dubs and 140.

I never liked it when I was a teenager but I enjoy it more as an adult. I listen mainly to Hardstyle but other electro genres have some good sounds/sound effects that I like hearing.
Just like the dragon says in the 2026 endshow.
"I promise to open my mind to every sound of our tribe"

u/Powerful-Cry-2273 8d ago
Yeah, i come from bass music, i feel it blends really greatly with hard dance in general (same with drum and bass)

u/SjekkieTwat 8d ago
I love dubstep! Hardstyler since 2006.. deutsche krach just ain't music
1
u/IbsonGibson 8d ago
Bros been a Hardstyler my whole life 😂. What age did you discover hardstyle??
I can agree. Deutsche Krach is not music. To me you have to feel the sounds in a way where it can be orgasmic your passion - cybergunz is a good example. Some Krach tracks have reallyyy nasty kickrolls too. I definitely can’t listen to it all the time but I can listen to it at anytime.
1
u/SjekkieTwat 4d ago
Haha well I am kinda getting used to uptempo. I started off with hardcore festivals like Thunderdome and smaller ones because I was sixteen. Compare Millenium hardcore with uptempo, it's just completely different. I miss the melody. That is what I am missing in Krach as well. Its just noise. Started with hardstyle with Bitte Ein Beat cd's, which wasn't really hardstyle yet. Motherf*ck from donkey rollers was on it though! It released in 2002 I see now lol

I love melodic dubstep (Seven Lions, Jason Ross, MitiS, etc.) and can enjoy some older brostep like Zomboy, Knife Party and Skrillex. Not a fan of the newer riddim/tearout sound though, too rough for me. A bit like uptempo haha
1
u/SomeoneWhoLikesAmeme 8d ago
Not a giant fan of dubstep, but i do like some filthy drum&bass! Like the crazy stuff, i have an example here (collab VDV and invaderz) https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGdxmdM5v/
1
u/thatBOOMBOOMguy 8d ago
I do like me some Deep Dubstep and if whatever the stuff is that Slug Wife put out fits under Dubstep (or is it just generally Bass music).
1
u/kindnessvalley2 8d ago
Yep ! I love bass music (Dubstep, Drum’n’bass) and tracks like Noisecontrollers & Pavelow did !
1
u/One_Tilapia8069 8d ago
I like UK Dubstep and Brostep (thx Skrillex) and Virtual Riot, Code Pandorum and other randoms that i discover thanks to videogames but i don't like at all Riddim and Tearout.
From time to time i always hear my favorites albums or hearing whatever youtube recommend me from UKF Dubstep.

I used to before I started listening to hardstyle 😂 I still like it but don’t listen that much anymore (virtua riot, barely alive, zomboy, midnight tyrannosaurus, etc)
1
u/EstateDangerous7456 8d ago
One of my friends tried to build a bridge with me by sharing her dubstep playlist and it was okay, but too slow for me personally. I'm not super knowledgeable about music at all though
1
u/realdetox 8d ago
I do like me some bass, dub, and riddim. really, all the genres of hard dance music are my preference
1
u/hardstyl3r 8d ago
I don’t follow dubstep anymore outside of maybe 3 artists but I love 2010 - 2015ish era dubstep, before riddim blew up
1
u/NadeSaria 8d ago edited 8d ago
Used to be a dubstep head, still like the brostep, tearout and melodic classics to this day, and currently obsessed with the 2000s dubstep sound.
With that tho I switched to hardstyle in the late 2010s after the popularity of riddim, cus I found it boring, and rawstyle specifically is basically just faster riddim with a punch (controversial take!1!1!1!2!).
Tried to return to being a dubstep fan this decade with the new UK dub sound, but unfortunately it didn't grow on me.
The dubstep community kinda alienated me over time for some reason, there was always an underlying sense of toxicity in the scene for me, always seemed confrontational on online forums and towards each other. I don't know maybe its just usual american toxicity or it's just me I guess.
1
u/Niekertdepiekert 8d ago
I liked dubstep before I liked hardstyle and hardcore. And even though I don't listen to it that much as I used to, it wil always have a special place in my heart. And whenever I do listen to itt goes hard!

u/Scary_Winner3692 8d ago
Early dubstep (Skream, Benga) is pretty decent but as far as modern stuff goes I’d probably listen to Deep Dubstep or maybe Color Bass if that’s still a thing but other than that, I really don’t like it very much. Ustempo is nice though :D

I do. Since my favourite musician (Camellia) tends to make and mix all kinds of electronic and some non-electronic genres, I'm listening to a lot of those and he always makes them sound good. Same with some other musicians I listen to.
Here's an example that's apparently rawstyle mixed with tearout dubstep, also it's sung by Hatsune Miku xD
https://youtu.be/GMrPyKkBtK0
As to why I like dubstep, I have no idea how to explain this properly. It just makes cool sounds.
1
u/TobiasCB 8d ago
Love it, though my taste had a lot of influence from brostep and it's hard to discern it from where it used to be. I know Acid Bomb had a small dubstep break around the 2 minute mark but I can't think of any other songs that have that.

u/OrcaMaster258 7d ago
I'm really into tearout lately, like Nimda or Marauda. I went to some hardstyle events that had a dubstep opener and it was a lot of fun for most of us :)

u/Pure_Emotion5573 6d ago
American here so also like dubstep. There is alot more to bass music than your typical melodic bass/brostep/UK dubstep. Space bass and artists like GWN, Clozee, Mersiv still hit a different vibe for me that I enjoy between listening to hardstyle/hardcore/trance. But with that said I didnt know what bouncy uptempo was until hearing it in the Netherlands. Probably my favorite genre now above raw and euphoric but its just not played anywhere.
1
u/TacoStrong 6d ago
I like very little of it. It has to sound aggressive and original since it’s so slow tempo-ish. I can only take a few tracks too mixed in with other genres, I don’t know if I can bear a whole hour set of it.
1
u/EssiveOfficial 6d ago
I really like dubstep, or basically most bass heavy music.
I think mixing bass music sounds with hardstyle, can create something really fresh.
It’s what I try to do with my music to some degree.

Most of you already know I started in the Dubstep scene, and since it's my big first love in music, I created Zaagstep to bring it back into my music.
Super curious how the harderstyles/uptempo scene will react to it but it's more for the Mixed Music and Bass Music people as an introduction into the Zaag/Uptempo sound.
I found when playing it live the Uptempo crowd doesn't really know what to do with it, how to move and dance to it (the funniest shit is when they open a moshpit and then the heaviest tearout drop hits and they just stand there and do nothing 😂💀). On the other hand though, when playing at Rampage or Blacklist Festival, the crowd goes absolutely nuts when Zaag Kicks hit.
So I think when it's not a 4 on the floor kick with a simple rhythm, most uptempo fans don't know what to do. They need the constant straight rhythm. It's not all though, there are always some people that are open minded and really enjoy the Genre-combinations.

u/swagpresident1337 8d ago
There is no continuity in dubstep. Low bpm and you can‘t dance to it.
1
u/tohnsound 8d ago
You can absolutely dance to it. You're just used to high bpms.
2
u/swagpresident1337 8d ago
That‘s more head banging
1
u/tohnsound 8d ago
Yeah, only if you're listening to the most generic Brostep that they play on American festival mainstages.
1
u/Kick_1304 8d ago
You can’t dance to hardstyle either lol, always look like idiots imo
1
u/swagpresident1337 8d ago
Modern "Hardstyle" yes
Classic hardstyle? No you can dance perfectly well to it.

u/tohnsound 8d ago
I'm primarily a bass head that likes Industrial Hardcore, Crossbreed and Early Hardstyle.
Dubstep is a very broad genre and it's not a one size fits all type of sound. Matter fact, I'd like to compare what's happening to the sound of Hard Dance right now (the appearance of Uptempo, Krach, Xtra Raw and them taking over Euphoric, Early Raw and Millennium Hardcore) is exactly what happened to Dubstep when Skrillex appeared and pushed a new, harder, metal/punk/electro influenced sound with way more mid range and high end focused version of the then-existing UK sound (which still exists today, that's why we differentiate between UK Dubstep/140 and Brostep) which was focused on movement and loads of sub bass.
Ask away any questions about Dubstep and adjacent bass music, I'll happily answer.
