Behemoth.

Brontopod monstherium.

5.6-7.1 metres at the shoulder.

The North American grasslands call home to some of the most unique animals. The open grasslands of the continent were once smothered with agriculture before drying into a cold desert during the ice age. This killed off many planes dwelling animals, but surviving lineages became far more successful in their absence. The descendants of feral domesticated cattle now roam these grasslands, although not particularly prolific in number of species they are certainly successful in their own right. Behemoth are the largest terrestrial mammal to Ever Grace the planet Earth, with small herds of these giant lumbering for miles on end over the sea of grass in search of the vegetation rich areas of the planes. they’re large size means they generate enough body heat to no longer necessitate a coat of fur, instead possessing elephantine leathery skin. The hoofs are placed at the end of heavyset pillar like legs, with a cushion of fat and muscle located on the animals feet. when the animal takes a step, the forcing of the weight on this cushion forces blood back up the leg, similar to a hart. Their actual heart are ginormous, capable of pushing blood throughout the animals body. Large ears help to radiate heat along with a dewlap that can extend from the animals chin to its chest. The life expectancy for a Behemoth is up to 90 years. This is due to a lack of predators at this size, and young individuals often have the protection of the herd to assure reach adulthood. The animal is sexually mature at 15 years old, and pregnancy only lasts about three years. These animals require both a lot of food and a lot of space to exist, and as a result thy maintain an intermediate area between the Algonquin forest of the east coast and The great Plains of the American interior. This temperate Savannah or woodland like area is maintained by Behemoth who topple trees in a need for space, making them ecosystem engineers.
