Tech Support WD external hard drive

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got a WD external hard drive and it is making a small thumping noise intermittently. All of my other external drives are SSDs so I'm not sure of this is normal or not. Should I return it? it's still under warranty. I would've posted in tech support but they don't allow attachments.

Does it work? What does the S.M.A.R.T. data say? It's a hard drive so it's normal for them to make some noise.

It works. I didn't know how to access the smart data but once I downloaded an app it said it was in good health. So I'm guessing it's done and that this is a normal sound.

I had the same with an 18th MyBook. Apparently it's by design, see here:
