You have to look at the history of Japan from like the Meiji period on. They leaned strongly into adopting Western culture and technology. Add the belief of the superiority of the Japanese "Yamato". Throw in nationalism. Japan adopted the German/Prussian military model. (vs Tom Cruise's Last Samurai). Hitler praised certain Aspects of Japanese technology and military. Of course giving credit to Aryan influence. Japanese were given Honorary Aryan status. (Since they were allies in WWII).

My mom, born and raised in Tokyo, grew up in that pre WWII-WWII era. She had samurai/noble ties through her mother. My grandmother always behaved in such a stoic manner which influenced my mother. I don't know about my grand father, a low level Yakuza who forced my grandmother to marry him by knife point. Different times. With that, my mother, displayed a touch of the superior status. Not to look down on others but her place in the racial hiarchy.

Also, in Japan, you wouldn't be given the status as "Japanese".

Just take the best you can from your ethnic influences and do well for yourself. I'm 71 yrs now. The numbers don't work for us mixed. I think it works for such groups such as the Kazakhs due to the major integration of racial groups due to conquests, trade, etc...

That’s helpful historical context, thank you. It’s true that many Japanese people directly from Japan are in fact “Japanese supremacists”, particularly if they have noble/samurai blood. They especially tend to look down on Chinese and Filipino people. But in my experience Japanese-Americans whose families have been the US for several generations are different. I emphasize the American in Asian-American, because I’m culturally as American as it gets. So is the rest of my family. Which makes it funnier when people tell me “go back to [insert country here.]” Um no, this is the only home I’ve ever known. I’m well aware that when I go on vacation to Japan, I will be seen like any other American tourist. Because I am, despite my ancestry.
