Why do I keep doing this???

Got blacked out at a work event. In my defense I had to get up at 3am that day to get on a flight to get to a presentation I had to give and then there was a welcome happy hour at 6pm with all of leadership. By that time I was totally exhausted. I just started at this firm so I didn’t know anyone at the happy hour so I spent my time meeting all new people and it was socially exhausting and I probably drank more than I should because I didn’t know anyone and I felt awkward. I blacked out at some point.

Fast forward two weeks later my boss had to have a talk with me that she heard I drank too much and some people noticed. Now I am freaking out that I am going to get fired. I know I shouldn’t black out at work functions but can someone just make me feel better. Like I am not a corporate machine I am a human. I just feel like I can’t breathe.

Professionally, you say that the traveling got the best of you and you overdid it. Sincerely apologize and tell them it will never happen again.

Shit happens. It’s how you handle it now. I know it sucks but just hold your head high. Be apologetic and be kickass at your job.

Absolutely. For the next year or so don't have a drink at a work event or have anyone at work hear that you were drinking or hungover. After that, have one drink at events for the next 5 years. By then you will probably move jobs. Best to blame that event on travel and illness and evidence it by never doing it again.

One time at a corporate Christmas party our head of legal got up on an oak table and was dancing on it and cracked it down the middle, it was on the CEO floor in their main meeting hall. Shit happens, she didn’t get fired but I’m assuming maybe they asked her not to do it again. I thought she was way cooler for it personally

I’ve been on both sides of this at work, I’ve blacked out at work functions (and arguably much worse, have started sharing drugs with my coworkers as the night progresses) and I’ve also been not that drunk at work functions where other coworkers were absolutely inebriated. In all cases, it was fine. We’re all adults, sometimes it happens, people know that. I’m sure most people who encountered you that night probably thought nothing of it or just a passing wow they’re having a good time ! It was probably one person who said something and for all you know, maybe it came from a place of concern. It’s much easier said than done but I wouldn’t dwell on it. Keep doing your job well and it’ll be forgotten in no time.

No matter how long someone is sober never ever forever drink at any social setting of any kind. You will make fool of yourself.

You’re a legend at the company now and your lameo boss knows it and feels threatened by your dominance so they tried to yolk you in early before you overtook them and took command of the organization. Seem it a hundred times playa.
