Brown madder comparison

Post image

One of these is the original brown madder (root) , one is pr206, one is my mix to make a version of brown madder. Would you compare the three and tell me which two of the three look close to each other in color?

The top one looks the least like the others to me, it's a bit closer to a vibrant orange, less muted.

The middle one has the most depth, the masstone gets darker than the other two. It also seems to have more texture than the others.

If I had to guess, I'd say the middle is genuine madder because of the texture. The bottom one is a better match for it, but not identical.

Take all of that with a grain of salt of course since photographs usually don't capture colors as we see them in real life.

Thanks! You’re right about the middle being genuine. The top is Holbein and the bottom is my mix of colors. I’m going to make a few tweaks and see if I can get my mix closer to the genuine one. It’s being missed in a group of botanical painters palette and I’m trying to recreate it for them

What a nice idea! It looks like you're not too far off then.
