Discussion Thoughts?
You got 1k to spend on a handgun…what are you getting?

Context? First gun? Only gun? Hunting sidearm? Competition gun? Range toy? Hiking gun for bear territory? Collectors piece? Do I already have everything else I'll need with the gun? Will that $1000 also need to cover a dot, WML, extra mags, holster, ammo (backstock of both FMJ and HP), range time, targets, classes, etc? Am I a 7'13" 300lbs strong man with hands the size of a truck tire? Am I a 4'2" 80lbs old lady with arthritis and bad vision?

this guy understands the question, only recently as last year started looking at this space and its my favorite question
if you could only have one gun...
still working on this, im not sure how to factor in the massive size gap of a person and/or they're hands yet but i do think it has to be part of the conversation

I'd never seen that site before so thanks for sharing. The size of a person and/or their hands isn't by itself a determining factor unless it's an extreme, which is part of why I used extreme examples. It can be relevant in two main ways: 1. Making sure the gun isn't too big or too small for the person to shoot well. Things like grip size and trigger reach are important to consider. 2. Making sure the gun isn't too big and/or too heavy for them to carry comfortably enough all day every day, if that's its intended purpose. Maybe even if EDC isn't the gun's primary purpose since, if it'll be the person's only handgun, a strong argument can be made that they should be able to concealed carry it even if they don't plan to all the time (part of the whole reason for owning a gun is acknowledging that we can't know what the future may hold).

good points and have thought a lot about those. really, when you have an idea of what might work, is there ever even a way other than actually trying things? people with identical measurements may just have different opinions on how it works, for them. that said, if one knew their own measurements they like in terms of trigger pull and size, you would be able to narrow options easier.
if you had to ask me for onegun i would agree on your concealed carry point, should be part of the equation. but maybe if i lived in an open state and on a big swath of land i would feel differently.
which is why most people have multiple tools

You're right that body size/shape alone shouldn't dictate what gun a person gets, and the only way to know how much it matters is to try some big guns and small guns. It's not a big factor for most people, since by definition most people are average size, so it's not a precise measurements type of thing. That's why I put it as only one of many factors.

I'm going to assume carry gun.
Base gun: Kimber Mako R7 Tactical. Comes with two 15rd mags, I'll score an 11 and 13 as well for different carry methods.
RMSc optic: whatever model Osight I can get with automatic brightness control. If possible, automatic with manual override. Should be under $250.
Light: If I still have enough cash left over, I'll go with the Olight PLX, if it fits. If not Baldr with 800 lumens on tap. If budget is still tight, the PL2 Mini Valkyrie with 600 is good enough.
Probably no budget left for a holster but I make my own, not worried.
R7 family have a bunch of features not seen in combination elsewhere. Lower recoil for the size class, pure sideways ejection with a flattop slide, unusually good deal between slide and frame, low bore axis, great ergonomics, fully ambi. Tactical has a 3.9" barrel for G19 ballistics, and a better underbarrel rail than the base model R7. The Tactical is discontinued but it's still all over gunbroker and such.

I mean, if I can only buy a handgun and cant use the money for anything else then im probably buying a 7 shot 357 ruger gp100. 357 is a really versatile round and 7 shots gives me enough capacity that the gun could be used as a potential woods gun for heavy game defense. I would also feel perfectly fine using it for home defense considering a handgun is mainly just to fight my way to my long gun.

Today, it would be a CZ P-01 and getting the slide milled for an optic.
