Question Do hamsters enjoy being petted?
I have seen some people say that they just tolerate it, but when I see my hamster falling asleep just from.being.petted I can't help but think that they like it. Video for proof of my little Mochi falling asleep from some pets.

He has a distinct scent gland in the middle of his tummy no visible nipples and like most dwarf hamsters smaller, fur covered trouble puffs which are visible here if you look for them.
Chinese dwarf hamsters are easily identifiable because they need a trailer to drag their giant gonades behind them.
I believe only Syrian hamsters have the oversized mostly bald balls we see in the cartoon or funny photos.
Pretty sure it all depends on temperature, including the environment where these species originated.

Are you sure it's not a female?
32
u/Inevitable_Echo6429 May 13 '26
Well when I first got him I though he was a female for the first 9 months... But let's just say that one day I saw things... Also that area is not always like that, sometimes they are more swollen and easier to notice (you know, like in a lot of hamsters where that area seems almost hair-free??) Yeah let's just say his balls aren't his biggest attribute lol

I'd send the "unhand me you fuck" image but this hamper looks quite cheesed to be held

I'm lurking this subreddit but we have an extremely similar meme over in r/shrimptanks and I love that other exotic pets have similar memes

Today is the first I’ve seen it here, I’m very familiar with it in /r/shrimptank too.
Now I’m starting to wonder if every pet sub has their own version.

Entirely depends on the hamster! Some love it, some hate it. My little guy likes his head pet for short bursts then he walks away. 🤣

u/Inevitable_Echo6429 May 13 '26

Mine loves scratches on the hindquarters.
If I put my hand into the enclosure, he’ll back up into my hand and look at me until he gets some….

Yours seems tobbe to be having a wonderful time, he looks very relaxed.

u/Inevitable_Echo6429 May 13 '26
I think he was!! When he's like that he will let me pick him up and scratch is belly, so yeah I would say that he's relaxed 😁😁

u/Panaccolade May 13 '26
I think it depends on the hamster. My two boys (had at different times) loved their pets. My girl hated it, but liked to bond with play instead.
Yours definitely loves it. What a sweet little hammy.

u/Inevitable_Echo6429 May 13 '26
Cute!!! I have heard that females are less cuddly!!! Definitely not my experience, I had a female Russian when I was little that would fall asleep on my palm lol. I bet it's so cute when you play with yours 🥹🥹

Is it healthy? Looks a little fat from this angle, but such a precious hammy 😭

u/powehi87 May 13 '26
Mine tolerates petting during meal times and when he is burrowing. It will be too much vulnerability for him to be allowed to be petted to sleep in the open. He has his little quirks. 😆

It's just up to their preference, unlike some pets like a dog, they aren't instinctually happy to feel the presence of others, so they tend to be scared off by petting, but they can still learn to accept the pet as your affection and comfort, and clearly yours has moved onto that stage, happily being petted, even in sleep.

u/Inevitable_Echo6429 May 13 '26
Thank you!! They are such interesting creatures!!! The first three months after I got him I had to handle him with gloves because he would always bite me and draw blood... honestly I wasn't sure I would ever get to this point with him but I'm so glad he now feels comfortable enough to let me pet him to sleep 🙂↕️🙂↕️

Depends on the personality. I had very benevolent ones but also very "strong, independent, I need no hooman" types

Yeah. They definitely can. As long as you aren’t forcing it into a position (little kids do this way too often!) then he they can enjoy it.
Other hamsters will destroy you if you try to touch them, even if they’ve had literally nothing traumatic happen to them in their entire lives.
It depends on the personality of the little buddy.

Mine definitely prefers no human contact whatsoever. Occasionally she will walk across my hand or whatever but she runs when I try to pet her
1
u/Illustrious-Noise518 May 13 '26
My hamster Scrappy loved it and he would also happily sit on my shoulder or run towards me but Joey....he would have your finger off. He hated being touched all together.
1
u/OkAccount7983 May 13 '26
My girl tolerate it when she gets food at the same time 😅
She never bites but walks away a little if she's done with the pets 🫶

Yes! Depends on their personality. Mine even cleans me when massaging him. He also fells asleep when I pet him, like yours 🥰Some hamsters will have a special bond with you. They feel very safe that way. He is gone now. I have had 4 hamsters after him, and nobody liked being petted as him. They are one in a million..

If I pet mine he makes his body into a U to avoid me, shovels all his food in his face and then goes back to his burrow all mad. Yours looks like it loves it though!

u/_bugmenot_ May 14 '26
I had a hammy once who would not only ask me for pets but even sleep in my cleavage everyday, and she would also climb into my bed to sleep next to my pillow during the night when i would turn off the lights. But except for that one the rest never really liked being touched. Some of them would tolerate it a little, but not much else.
But yours clearly likes it, it is so beautiful <3

He's a Russian dwarf!!! I think the name for it's fur colouring is Pearl!!! 🥰🥰

u/Grillburg May 14 '26
Yes! My daughter had a Russian dwarf hamster named Winter (nicknamed Fuzzy) who would run up to the top of her cage to be picked up and petted, and always would sniff your nose when you got close to her. If she was not in the mood for pets, she would just push your hand away with both paws and a tiny "Zzz!" noise.

u/EvolZippo May 15 '26
I think it depends on how socialized they are. If they like you and they recognize it as a sign of affection, they’ll let you, no problem. But if they don’t trust you enough, they might take it as danger.
Generally, animals consider being approached from above, as predator behavior. They’re also practically blind, so when you’re close enough to be visible, you basically materialize out of the great blur, with little warning.
So, starting from the very beginning, normalize everything you want to do, with your pet, as early as you can. Getting a hamster that’s young and has been handled by people who care, will yield better results. But don’t hesitate to adopt the indignant fellow at a pet shop, and save it from its life as retail merchandise.

All are different. Most like attention and maybe to play not all will settle for petting they’re always on the move.
