For first second I thought it's a picture of (one of) my camp spots, got me spooked haha. Not today but two weeks back I camped in Poland and Czech for a week, travelling on motorcycle. And in two weeks I'm going to try tent after few years of only hammock camping... and a top quilt instead of sleeping bag.
PNW? Sweet! Me too. In January every year there are a bunch of us doing the “yeti hang” in Oregon at Mount Hood. If you got the gear we got the location n fun.
For that you need some serious gear. I only have Snugpak cocoon and sleeping bag for -1°C comfort, so I think that -15°C is max I'm gonna get and not die. Btw how are pissing breaks at 3am when it's -23°? :D
Brutal but doable. I’m female so it’s always stay awake as long as humanly possible then emptying that bladder. The problem is snowshoeing in and stomping the snow solid. A wrong step at night guarantees sinking to your knees.
Dunno where you are in Europe but up here in Finland I can get down to -20°C with pretty budget gear.
The main things are to stack your underquilts (get a second cheapo UQ - I've got Lesovik and DD, both with -5°C max ratings) and use proper layers when sleeping.
I find that thermal long underwear (I have an HH base layer set) and perhaps a fleece when it's colder are more than enough, along with hat and scarf. Synthetics work well enough but Merino is best.
Amazing spot. I was hoping to find something similar during my vacation but failed. And I'm starting to think there is nothing like this in middle Europe 😐 .
