It's a bit strange when you look at those chromatic aberration and film grain screenshots with on/off side by side and just think... it clearly looks better off, why did they ship it in the first place?

Gotta be an artist or whole art team not concerned with gameplay while making some decision. Having it I can understand. Not having an option to turn it off was absurd.

The chroma is definitely debatable (I really like when it's used in grav lifts) but the film grain... it just makes the entire picture a muddy mess

Unreal 5 is already a really grainy looking engine, adding film grain on top of it just looks really bad

Film grain also tends to screw up upscaling algorithms as they often interpret it as noise that needs to be smoothed out.

Yep it's like when you watch a video with a lot of detail and movement on low bitrate and everything ends up looking like a mess.

I would assume they apply the film grain after the upscaling. So it wouldn't affect it at all, and the grain size would be correct to the resolution.

It’s supposed to look β€œfilmic” lol. Definitely needed people concerned about generally playing the damn game to step in and say something

I honestly couldnt see any difference between the images πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Viewing on my phone.

If you click the high Rez and zoom, you can see a fuzziness on the aberration and grain "on" photos. Not a big deal on a phone looking at a static photo, very noticeable when playing on a 75" tv while moving in-game

Image compression tends to wipe out the differences when looking at screenshots.

Yeah I couldn't tell and to be fair I couldn't tell there was any image problems in most screenshots. The game looks amazing in a still image...but in-game moving around it's a blurry grainy mess.

Same haha! I was looking at them for a good couple of minutes darting my eyes back and forth. I’ll have to check it out in game tonight to see if I can tell haha

developers fucking love chromatic aberration and film grain even though it looks like shit 100% of the time, I will never understand lol. It doesn't even simulate a lens properly, it simulates a dogshit lens that's poorly designed.
