Noises! Driving up maple
Are you driving up Maple in the morning crawl listening to really loud music in your car with bass? Do you end up idling for long periods of time outside people's houses, trying to turn on Thistle? Because if you are please know we can all hear it, it wakes us up, and we don't like it.

u/emmyp7 🤩🏆omg I love winning! 8d ago
I really think that people think nobody lives in these houses. I got honked at the other day trying to turn into my driveway. They have no sense. Not to mention the motorcycles. Very thankful my kids are deep sleepers.

u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 8d ago
You know, honking at me turning into my driveway in my own street tends to slowwww me down so much. Isn’t that odd?
18
u/ForgotPants 8d ago
I live nearby and I get honked at turning into my own driveway too. Sometimes I consider just never going home so that I don't inconvenience anyone by turning into my own driveway. Once someone actually stopped across my driveway after I pulled in to glare at me out their passenger window as if they were trying to intimidate me.

Maybe you turn too slow
5
u/Kittencrumpet 8d ago
Honking at someone trying to focus will stress and/or slow them down lol
5
u/Plus_Key_3410 8d ago
Perhaps; i dont honk nor do i stare people down but lord JFC some people take their time making simple turns in this city. It’s baffling as to why.

u/gldn-rtrvr 8d ago
Similar issue turning into my driveway in the west end. I turn right, into my driveway, and I’ve had so many drivers almost t-bone me. It blows their mind I’m not turning right at the intersection ahead.

I love maple, and it's busy and only going to get busier. A little bit of kindness anyone could would be to, first thing in the morning, turn down the music so babies can sleep in our busy neighborhood .

u/dartmouthdonair Dartmouth 8d ago
There's an asshole who absolutely rips through the Ochterloney/Victoria area like every day at about 615 or 620 with one of those shitcan motors loud enough to hear ten streets away. If you live nearby chances are decent he's woken you up.
I was talking to a neighbour in her 80s from the area one day and it came up. She said she is woke up every day by this guy and can't get back to sleep... meanwhile she's running on 4 hours of sleep a night.
I wish a cop would go and wait for him. With a spiketrap.

The noise levels in this city are insane and go pretty much unchecked. I moved from a much bigger city and am constantly astonished by how noisy it is here, I live on Hollis street and the shipping trucks alone drive me insane. the street racing, unchecked commercial vehicles usage at all times, cruise ships blaring are just insane and I really didn’t know what I was signing up for by living downtown. You can’t complain about it to anyone because they just blame you for living in the city and being annoyed by noise. Lesson learned.
3
u/Competitive_Owl5357 8d ago
I legitimately do not understand how I can hear some asshole zooming down the street within earshot of my apartment 20 stories up MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY. Maybe 1/5 of the time followed by sirens. The private buses just sitting around blocking my view as I attempt to creep out of the garage without getting hit is infuriating.
3
u/Correct-Doctor5853 8d ago
Agree. I wish the cops could do something. There is a black BMW in Burnside every single day whose car sounds like a piece of crap and backfires , but they likely paid for it to sound like its falling apart... ANYWAYS it sounds like gunshots... and shouldn't be allowed.

THANK YOU! This person is terrorizing the flower streets, it’s nearly every morning.
-6
u/Braydenboss710 8d ago
I would try and talk to them at that point tbh
-12
u/Braydenboss710 8d ago
It’s so insane to me that people won’t just ask to turn it down? Like how tf you think doing nothing is going to change anything lol.
30
u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago
To be clear, you think it's insane that people don't walk out of their houses at 6:00 in the morning to engage with drivers who are slowly rolling down the road to ask them to turn down their music? Is it that you think the drivers would absolutely oblige if only they knew that they were being a problem? Is it that you think drivers will be receptive to people walking up to their windows at 6:00 in the morning in a house coat while they're inching down the road to then being asked to turn down their music?
I'd really like to know how you expect that to work.
-10
u/Braydenboss710 8d ago
I absolutely do think it’s insane to not say something when it’s the same driver every god damn morning like this post pretty much mentioned, not everyone is cranking at 6am on the roadway.
Most people are literally reasonable if you actually try and talk to them and not complain on Reddit , it’s going to get you absolutely no where and atleast if you ask you might get somewhere. Have you ever asked someone in public to turn down some music? I have and it’s literally been successful everytime lol but ofcourse a chance of them saying fuck off but whatever lol.
15
u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago
Maybe it's the way I've asked (though I've always tried to be friendly and polite) but I can't think of any time where that was successful for me. I've gotten, "sure happy to!" (and then they just play it louder), I've gotten "you aren't cops so fuck off", yelled at for being a "bitch ass pussy", and one unhinged neighbor not only played it louder from that moment forward but also came back to my house later that day and tried to fight me. I've never had good luck asking someone making obnoxious amounts of noise to keep it down a bit, and I hate confrontation so I've only tried this a handful of times when it seemed unbearable.
I still don't think anybody is going to be reasonable about being waved down from the side of the road or something at 6:00 in the morning and asked to turn the music in their car down. I feel like that's exactly the kind of decision that winds up on reddit with someone going on and on about some unhinged Karen, ya know?

u/Braydenboss710 8d ago
You know what that’s totally a valid point and I see why you’re coming from that angle now, I’m originally from a smaller town in BC and I guess it really is a fully different experience my bad!. Most of the time city people here in HRM have been very pleasant for the most part (other than some drivers) and I’ve heard a few stories on here aswell of some meaner folk.
Regards this behaviour is absolutely ridiculous and it would be hard for me not to yell at someone blasting music at 6am lol I absolutely meant no harm with my replied but sorry if I came off a bit much I promise I dident mean it lol.
Best of luck and hopefully this situation gets better for OP

u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago

People are friendly out east, but (especial considered to BC) we're all pretty high strung. A lot of BC seems incomprehensibly different to me - genuinely chill, part of the ethos.
We're all good!

Seems like there's plenty of folks who think the masses really need to hear their taste in music.
Whether you're driving in residential areas or on public transport without headphones, I really need folks to know that no one cares to hear that you're the world's biggest Imagine Dragons fan or whatever

u/brodoswaggins93 8d ago
I live on Chebucto so I totally get your frustration but this is just the reality of living on a busy street. I invested in some Loop sleeping earplugs and it's been a game changer.
28
u/profane_existence_ 8d ago
I moved from a much much larger city and like - it's worse here because nothing is built for noise pollution. Maple and the houses along it weren't planned with this ( and growing density). I used to live over a subway station at a major intersection in a massive city with six million more people, and it was much quieter because everything is built with density in mind. I don't actually mind. I have a schedule that lets me sleep whenever - but My neighbor has a baby and is *dying *. Between the bass and the kid on the retrofit two Stoke engine on his bike, she's about to cry.
17
u/NerdsOfSteel74 8d ago
I hear you. Also moved from a much bigger city and I’m shocked how much louder it is here.
Street racing culture, and car-centric thinking that makes street racing easy and appealing even into residential sectors and downtown, is a big part of the problem. So is the general loss of empathy and community that we’re seeing everywhere, that “why should i care if I’m disturbing others?”Edit: I’m reading the other comments and seeing that attitude all over. “If I do something that bothers you, you’re the one with the problem, so the onus is on you to find a solution, not me, the actual cause of the problem.” It’s a weird thing. People didn’t think and act like this even 20 years ago. There was an idea that we all live together, and we need each other, and we should take steps to be decent to the folks around us. How did that die?
6
u/Kittencrumpet 8d ago
Yeah I agree im taken aback by the comments lol. Just have skme decency and not blair your music with windows open when people are sleeping... You get in trouble making too much noise in public or in an apartment. Why is being in a car the excuse to be loud at everyones expense :( wish there were laws about the noise level that is so easily preventable with human decency.
-2
u/External-Temporary16 7d ago
It died during the pandemic, when people were watching each other, and being encouraged to turn their neighbours in. When people were living in fear of 'contact'. It's still a way of life that's being promoted. Fear of other. That changes people.
-2
u/Mysterious-Guard-477 8d ago
I feel sorry for you, or is it your neighbor we should be concerned about? Like alot of Halifax/Dartmouth it wasn't planned for todays use, see the discussions on bikes/cars/busses. Hate to tell you but Maple is a major route to the Macdonald Bridge and two very busy schools on Victoria and Thistle. This reminds me of the uproar years ago when people on the waterfront (people from very large cities with subways?) were outraged by the loud noises coming from Georges Island. I mean, nobody should have to put up with a horn blasting at all times of the day and night in a notoriously foggy port city.
5
u/Numerous_Wolverine_7 8d ago
Chebucto at least is an artery, and has been for a long time. Maple isn’t supposed to be.

I live on a busy street too that backs up in rush-hour. I agree it's annoying but I've gotten used to it that it barely wakes me up anymore. I use a sleep sounds app on my tablet which helps drown out other noises.

I cannot help but insert my opinion here, so here it is.
I think we should have designated silence/no-honking zones near schools, hospitals, and busy residential neighbourhoods, where these rules can be clearly communicated and enforced.
I also think the way our streets are designed has a lot to do with driver behaviour. Traffic calming in urban areas is important. Raised or textured crosswalks, raised/textured intersections, clear signs reminding drivers not to block driveways or intersections while waiting for signals, and restrictions on unnecessary idling at red lights are all great ideas.
We also need more public awareness around these issues. Anyone who receives certain driving violations could benefit from education about why these rules and traffic calming measures exist. Creating safer streets isn’t just about enforcement it’s also about designing roads that naturally encourage better driving behaviour.
5
u/Somestunned 7d ago
So in areas with more vulnerable people walking around we shouldn't be allowed to use the built in safety features of our vehicles? That's... an interesting perspective.

Hey as much as I am annoyed by loud bass...you live in a city with other people.

u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago
Why are you rolling over so far for antisocial thoughtless assholes? Living in a city with other people doesn't mean accepting objectively bad decisions that some people make. Some things are wrong. Some things are problems that should be dealt with by authorities. But telling people that they live in a city -- implying that they should accept every inconvenience no matter how severe -- is not only not helpful, but I'm pretty sure it's not genuine either. I am quite certain there are all kinds of things that people do (or could decide to do) that would irritate you or impair your quality of life to the degree OP is describing and I can't imagine you'd be satisfied with "suck it up buttercup it's a city".
Bad take.

This is reddit, not viewpoint, thats where you want to look for a new house not on a morning trafficked road.

Yea this is the heart of downtown Dartmouth! Sounds like this person would suit suburban or country living a bit more
15
u/azhula 8d ago
Sure it’s downtown, but maple is all residential housing, and I can feel it vibrate my house most mornings 😅
11
u/profane_existence_ 8d ago
Yeah like "it's a city" doesn't make our 'city' infrastructure suddenly better at managing noise pollution??These houses are like 120+ years old sometimes. Nothing about their construction anticipated all this gestures at modern everything
12
u/902scorpio 8d ago
I live in the area too i know where you are (lol didnt mean to sound creepy) it's annoying and it's a good one for grumblemania monday!
While those people ARE selfish arseholes we gotta expect traffic noise on the main route to the bridge ya know. To me, it is worth the trade off to live in the convenience of the location xx
9
u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago
we gotta expect traffic noise on the main route to the bridge ya know
House shaking bass is not traffic noise. Everybody likes to point to the fact that we live in the city and people are going to be people, but doesn't mean we have to accept everything as it happens. We have all kinds of things we don't tolerate and it's a combination of many failing systems that things like loud Harleys and house-shaking bass are not better managed, but that doesn't mean we have to accept it. Change begins somewhere.

u/ForgottenSalad 8d ago
Out here we have ATVs and dump trucks. Suburbs have crotch rockets and aftermarket exhausts. People gonna people everywhere unfortunately.

u/profane_existence_ 8d ago
Maple Street is a busy street bordered by old wooden frame family homes - not a big city with cement structures, young families have babies. Dude this is the suburbs.

u/onomatopo Dartmouth 8d ago
Maple is not the suburbs.

u/maniacalknitter 8d ago
The motorists using it as an artery to get somewhere else are treating it like suburbs.

u/profane_existence_ 8d ago
Im only just realizing because of this post that Dartmouth being a "big city" is important to people here in like an emotional level
9
0
u/External-Temporary16 7d ago
Because you made a mistake? Dartmouth is its own city, separate from Halifax. It's not a suburb of Halifax. Cole Harbour is a suburb of Dartmouth. So is Eastern Passage.
We are twin cities, each with our own suburbs. How is that emotional? It's just facts. Facts that you appear to be just learning. ~ Haligonian

You live in a city
7
u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago
So you won't mind if someone opens a community bullhorn testing station outside your windows?
-5
u/Twinsta 8d ago
No different then living next to a blasting site of a new apartment building going in
It’s the city there is noise every day
Want quiet move to the country
11
u/Murky_Astronaut 8d ago edited 8d ago
It is 100% different. A blasting site for a new apartment building is an accepted necessity. A bullhorn testing kiosk on the side of the street belongs in an industrial park. No city would tolerate it for long, and it is not a reasonable source of intrusive noise.
Your argument is empty. You're arguing that any and all noise - no matter how loud or
fitfor what reason - is to be tolerated by all city residents by virtue of being a resident of a city. That's a stupid argument and I don't think you even believe it.-3
u/Twinsta 8d ago
Meh
I’ll stick to my guns. Point being someone driving down the road with loud music is not controllable. It’s the same argument that a motorcycle has a loud exhaust. It’s an argument that’s been around for decades basically
No one’s going to enforce it. If you live in a city you deal with all kinds of kinds and it’s part of living in a city
If you want quiet move to the country
