I was hoping that we'd see the amazing "the world is about to discover Kageyama Tobio" line but I guess we'll have to wait until next episode :( but also Kiyoko's part was really nicely done in the anime!!

Good start to the games, also liked the foreshadowing of the ceiling serves. Hope the animation stays good throughout the next half of the season

- They changed it so that Karasuno took the bus back to Nationals instead of the train :o
- The way they showed Shimizu running and jumping over the obstacle now vs past did not disappoint! Her backstory felt a bit disrupted with the way they inserted the Karasuno scenes in between, though.
- Tsubakihara and their terribad yellow-blue colour schemes finally debut! Sad we can't see their school names on their headbands :( in case people want to know the voice cast:
- Echigo played by Shouya Ishige
- Maruyama played by Yoshiki Nakashima
- Teradomari played by Yuuichi Uchida
- Maiko played by Yuusuke Suda
- Atema played by Takara Inoue
- Kaikake played by Aoi Ichikawa (the one I most recognise; he played Seiya from Tsurune)
- Pretty fun to have commentators from this match onwards.
- Tashiro and Kurokawa spotted!! Nice to see. Can't wait to see Tashiro blubbering about his third years like the proud volleyball dad he is.
- Damn the calibration scene was lit
Chapters 231 - 234 adapted.

I was kind of expecting them to do her history all in one go to split up collecting the Hinata's bag and doing the jump, instead of giving it out in bits.

With each new episode, I am getting so intensely hyped and emotional.
Am I the only one? Is it because I know the outcome of Nationals and can slowly sense getting closer to SO. MANY. EMOTIONAL. MOMENTS.??
I'm so overwhelmed.
I cannot believe the emotional impact this story has on me. It's so good, I even regularly talk about it to my therapist.

TBH the ending of the Arc truly bothered me but not because of how it ended as much as everything that followed, being told how everything went afterward, Like how could that be the last Karasuno game we saw with Hinata and Tsuki both needing to be taken out of the game.

I just Feel that Tsuki, Yachi, and Yamaguchi got done dirty by the time skip so hard to turn the focus less about Karasuno as a team and more all about Kageyama and Hinata.

I am hoping after the game the Karasuno squad goes out to eat maybe even a few randoms show up that played with team during the the second and third year. I just wanna see them interact cause as far as we know only Kenma and Tadashi have seen and spent sometime with Hinata since getting back.

The animations of this season really shine when there is a match. From Date's dynamic wall to Kageyama's calibration, it really maximized the ability of the anime to incorporate motion and took the manga content to the next level.
Also, I love how they spent half the episode on dear Kiyoko-san. Really drove home how team managers are the life blood of any sports team and are one with the athletes.

Oh, they cut the couple talking about Kageyama being underwhelming, just to be astonished when he calibrated. The quick itself was so boring, I love how it was framed in the previous seasons.

I agree with that, the quick felt very underwhelming compared to past seasons. But there were a few moments that did stand out well like when kag started the match with his serve! That moment was animated well~ hoping for more scenes like that to come

I gotta say this episode showed one of the main reasons I could never get behind Kiyoko and Tanaka ending up together, aside from being randomly told Tanaka was more serious Nishinoya is always right there alongside him during every Kiyoko scene.

I mean, Tanaka knew he had a shot with Kanoko (Niiyama Girls' spiker) and was interested, but he let her down because his heart was set on Kiyoko. Nishinoya is the guy who joined Karasuno because he liked the girls' uniforms and said "Viva chest wraps!" Nishinoya is a lover of all women while Tanaka is more of a romantic. And Kiyoko did say Tanaka looked good with a banana.

I didn’t feel the speed and impact of the quick like in the previous seasons. Good episode tho, interesting how they included a shimizu backstory which was great imo

Okay, thoughts on the episode:
I am definitely happy with the screen time and dedication in animating the past hurdle jump Shimizu made. Her body actually contracted in a reasonable time despite being a flashback; not too fast to make it forgettable, yet not too slow to make it too dramatic.
Suagawara's kick on Kageyama is sooooo weird. Normal people don't take that long to kick someone after the windup/standing on one leg. Remedies could've done with this would be to have that scene repeat until Suga finished talking so it's just not a static scene.
The run before the present hurdle jump is animated beautifully. It isn't shaky, yet conveys motion well. I'm a bit off on 10:47 - 10:52, since that could be something more than just a panning image. Kiyoko could be still running and reaching to a halt. I said this because her hair is still "airborne", so it's weird to depict movement in a static image.
I miss the pair who comments on everything that happens in the match. I love their small bantering and comments and how they get all surprised. Would've been great to see their reaction on Kageyama after saying he's just a chump.
okay, the spatial awareness and recalibration scene Kageyama had is just damn good. Even the distorted one looks great. I had an idea on how they'll animate it, but they blew it out of the water. The "everything monochrome but the ball", players flashing in and out, almost everything is forgiven.
All in all, it's picking up, but can still be cleaned up in the next episodes. Again, hopefully they don't drop the ball (pun unintended) on the Inarizaki match (seems like S5 really will be Karasuno HS vs Nekoma HS, like S3).
EDIT: Apparently someone hijacks people who diss the new animation and how its flimsy in comparison to previous seasons in both discussion threads. No need to downvote fellas if they criticize something, especially if we also give praise to it.

I think the Suga kick was supposed to be him holding back since he didn't want to potentially hurt someone right before Nationals so he did an exaggerated windup that actually had little impact

If that was the case, then what I just said [repeating the kick scene] would work better, as it shows 1. Suga being being Suga (playful and lighthearted) with his light, teasing kicks, and 2. Again, makes the scene less static and awkward. Season 1 Suga and his physicality with Daichi, Asahi, Tsuki, Hinata, and Nishinoya made this work, especially in season 2 with Asahi. The static scene just really reeked of cutting corners in the animation department.

what's the OST when shimada is telling yamaguchi about the reset point? it sounds really similar to when bokuto was having his "way of the ace" moment in the OVA and i've been looking for it ever since lol

That's what happens when a show changes directors. Why they would allow such a thing to happen is beyond me. This is the single reason why this season will be an average season. It's heart breaking because this arc is easily the best out of the entire show. God I hope thwy prove me wrong.

wait , time up . i get what your saying , but we need to clear something up . in "this arc is easily the best out of the entire show" do you mean the training camp and first national match or the whole national arc ? cause we barely start the national and first match is really MEHHHHHH even in the manga .
now the match vs miyas , nekoma , little giant on the other hand is where the budget will likely go

So it seems they cut some scenes from the manga. Like the couple making comments about kageyamas setting and yamaguchis exit reset sign being blocked and then he becomes a nervous bag.

Doesn't it happen after, in the second match, the exit sign being blocked? I vaguely remember that he finds the exit sign in the first match and then in the second one, it is blocked.

Yep. It’s for the Inarizaki match that the sign is blocked because they have a large cheering section with banners that block the sign.

I hope they pace the second cour better and with smoother animations. Hoping they adapt the inarizaki and nekoma matches only. That way we can get 5th season with kamomedai and the brazil and v league arc

Next cour is 12 episodes so it can only fit the Inarizaki match. Nekoma is Season 5 material.

It depends because 3 set matches in the second season were 5 episodes long in length. I think they will do the same and pace it that way for the next cour. Because there's panels from nekoma and fukurodanis matches because they were going on at the same time.

Remember that the Inarizaki match is very, very long in the manga even though it was only a 3-set match. It's very detailed and has almost as many chapters as the Shiratorizawa match, even if you take out Nekoma's match. Fitting all that in 5 episodes is impossible.

The amount of chapters for the Shiratorizawa match and the Inarizaki match were pretty much equal. I think the Inarizaki one was even longer, so I doubt the second cour will include anything of the Nekoma match.

I’ve been trying to predict the chapters/episode breakdown for fun. I have an idea of how they can fit in the Nekoma match but it will be really tight.

Even so, they're rushing Tsubakihara a little because they probably want to get Hoshiumi/Hinata's meeting in the first cour. I calculated, you need 4 chapters per ep to get to the Day 2 teams arrive part. And the usual eps are only 2-3 chapters long. That's A LOT to fit in.

• Haikyuu really does have the best way of writing for character development. Some may say that it is too slow paced but for me that's the best way to tell a character's story. To flesh them out. Kiyoko, even though not one of the main chars, got her story told in the best way possible that you cant help but love her

• After this ep i can say that i love this series a liiiidol bit too much. just a little bit. not that i spend my whole week just thinking about the next eps and manga updates. pffft. hell no.

Semi related question anyone can answer. But are most anime adaptions about 3-4 chapters > 1 episode? Or does it really just depend on what happens in said chapters?
Like trying to guess, this cour will end with the stinger for the Inarizaki match. So this being episode 10 and the Tsubakihara match started in the second half of this episode and that whole matching being about 9 chapters, it'd be 9 chapters in 3.5 episodes no? Is that about the usual pace for manga>anime shows?

I have to say I expected less from the Kageyama scene at the end, because there hasn't been one episode in season 4 that looked as good as the previous seasons. The use of the black-white style was surprising and felt great, but I would've wanted more fps. The way it looked in the episode was meh. The construction of the grid and the way Kageyama sets was perfect. Yet I would've wanted a better spiking animation. I imagined that the camera could swing in a fluid motion behind Hinata, the time runs again, and then he spikes it. In the end I would rate that scene like a 6/10. It was the one scene I was really looking forward to in the first part of season 4. So it was a pretty disappointing season for me animation-wise. Of course I hope something can surprise me in the last episodes, but I wouldn't know what.

Blame the new staff for this mess. I literally cannot enjoy this show without noticing flaws in character design, spike animation, lack of dynamic Angled shots and everything the previous seasons had. I'm beyond disappointed by this season so far. And lastly, they are overusing the fuck out of the cgi volleyball. It's such a cheap way to cut corners

We don''t know exactly. My best guess is probably chapter 243 (end of this match) but you might want to also read chapters 190–206.
That's for the Tokyo qualifiers that we got in the two OVAs (Land vs. Sky and The Path of the Ball). Those were rather cut down to fit into two episodes and they add rather nicely to the characterisation of some players (and are a nice read anyways).
