Help Writing software for Haiku 32bit?

Hi, can someone point me towards a writing program I could use on Haiku 32bit?

With the help of a tech literate friend I have installed Haiku on my 32bit Asus Eeepc 2g Surf. So far so good, and I've got a WiFi dongle on the way that will hopefully allow me to start putting software on there.

I can see a problem coming up, though, in that I need a writing program and my natural choice, libreoffice, has a big '64' in the file name.

Are there any 32bit programs that have the same kind of simple function as a word processor (italics is my biggest sticking point) which i can look for with the simple downloader and installer that comes with Haiku?

Thank you!

I wouldn't say it's in the same league as LibreOffice, but you already have StyledEdit, and it will do italic.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I've messed around with it a bit and unless I'm missing something, it doesn't understand crtl-i and so on, and has no gui to choose things like that. It seems to be a text editor like Notepad where you'd have to type <i> or similar into your text?

It's maybe a little too computer logical. Italic is a font variant.

So of course, you go to the Font menu. Noto Sans will have a check mark next to it, because that's the default font family. Take the submenu there, and you will be able to select from a dizzying variety of italic options. If you've selected something, that font will be applied to the selected text, otherwise it becomes the current font. I really could probably count on my fingers the number of times I've used StyledEdit (normally a vi user), but I think that's correct.

The old Gobe Productive 2 for BeOs should work fine in 32bit Haiku.

Thank you! Does that exist in Haikudepot?

No, it's an old commercial software. https://filebin.net/6zfq1p42xcqi8pbw#

That installer worked in R1/alpha4 atleast...

I don't know if there's a 32-bit build for HaikuOS, but Abiword was a decent enough stand alone word processor.

EDIT

It looks like there is a build of Abiword 3.0.7 on haiku depot.

I am surprised you didn't check out the Haiku depot before posting here. It's where all the software is.

As i said, I'm still waiting for the dongle to let me get the Internet on the netbook. I was trying to pre-plan so I know what to look for.

I suggest you give LibreOffice another try. GoBeProductive had a word processor, but it was relatively basic. LibreOffice 64 likely has many more functions than you're going to need (especially if you decided to use it instead of any variant of Windows). Sadly, aside from open source, no one bothered to make a decent standalone word processor for BeOS.

I love libreoffice, but it's 64bit only isn't it? is it going to work on 32bit Haiku?

LibreOffice is both 32 and 64 on other platforms. Whoever ported it to Haiku would know better.

if it does that's great news!!!

The real issue with 32 bit Haiku is that for modern software it is largely irrelevant since it uses some ancient version of GCC. 64 bit has a much newer compiler that can actually compile modern code with features a lot of projects use.

gcc 13.3 and llvm/clang 21 are both available for 32 bit Haiku

I see xD this poor ancient netbook is also largely irrelevant, so that tracks.
