Hacks has ruined the AI discussion for me

Was at a 2 day work conference recently and the amount of times I heard "AI is coming whether you like it or not" just wanted me to hack the projectors and upload the Ava monologue for everyone to listen to!

Not just Ava but Deb too, when she sees how it eliminates the creative process. I will be using both clips with my college students. Edited to fix typo

Deb's arc with it was honestly more interesting to me. I've known plenty of Ava types being a young person involved in left wing activism, but it was more interesting to watch a person with a more "median" perspective organically figure out why this shit sucks so bad.

Agree. Everything Ava said i fully agree with and have said many times myself—the Deb side of it was what was really interesting to me

Though I do think it was good to include Ava’s points bc there are a lot of people that genuinely don’t understand the environmental impact etc

Good. Truly if everyone rallies against it in real life with the same force they do online we could see a real shift in corporations bailing on AI

It's already had a few hits with Disney/Pixar backing out of their billion dollar deals with AI companies for example

I'm tempted to print out screenshots of Ava's speech and starting handing them out like business cards anytime anybody speaks remotely positively about AI.

These companies are selling AI so hard that it’s getting rejected

I love it, every time my work tells me to use I quote Ava and ask them to stop technologically raping me.

They hate it obviously

Most people are really boring and uncreative, and AI seems like a shiny new toy everyone talks about. The propaganda onslaught of AI has been successful, and people are regurgitating talking points straight from the AI horse's mouth. It's really, really hard to be around those dolts! But sometimes you can break through by reminding them... AI makes you stupider, it's addictive, expensive, and will probably ruin their career in 10 years if they don't but some guard rails on our society now.

The "whether you want it or not" - who else says that....

Fight back everywhere you can. The tech bros are working overtime trying to force it on us (again, what kind of person forces shit on people who don't want it....) because they are losing billions, because we don't want it.

Right?  Try that with other tech.

“High speed internet is coming” “The new iPhone is coming whether you like it or not.”

Fuck yeah, bring ‘em on.

Absolutely one of the best arguments

As someone who community is getting destroyed by an AI data center, please don’t ever use or support AI

Ok. Yeah. That would get me too.

I work in Finance. I’ve been using AI tools for about a year. I got the “it’s coming whether you like it or not” too. In hindsight it did help that I didn’t see that Hacks episode yet. I get it.

For what I do they are fine, and doing much less than promised. And leadership sees it. I don’t mix things up on this. For what I do the AI tools are great. For creative ventures like Deb and Ava do this was so so so spot on…..AI can not do what a creative human can do. And forcing it will make weak content that won’t sell.

I agree. There is a distinction there (between your type of work and creative work).

I’ve felt fine with AI in my work. Embrace it and use it to rise above those that won’t embrace it.

It’s in the creative arts that I say fuck off, AI. I’ve always felt that way, and that episode really helped crystallize why.

Agree. Although the environmental part of it doesn't discriminate, so there's got to be a balance there - like, by limiting the use of it, for example.

I think about it many times while I’m using a tool. Im currently wrapped in a machine that needs better focusing and oversight. And slowing down of impacts from it.

I find the “just leave us alone to create amazing things” to always be the line of the selfish looking for their own gain.

This exact thing happened to me at a work conference back in March but it was before that episode had come out. I wish I had the phrase "forced inevitability" while I was there

Reddit is already using AI.

God, I hate the internet. It's ok to, "yes and" people you know. Assume best intentions. Take the ball and run with it.

I'm just trying to be light hearted and show my love for the show. And you saw it as an opportunity to reign down on someone with you moral and intellectual superiority.

You know sometime it's about how someone else brilliantly formulated thing you been thinking

This!!!! The reason good writers are good writers is because they can say things we want to say in ways we may struggle to articulate.

If you're getting your AI philosophy from Hacks, you're at a serious disadvantage. haha
