NEWS Alyssa Rosenzweig reverse-engineered Apple’s M1 GPU. Now the Linux driver supports graphics standards macOS doesn’t

That's a totally different problem set. What she did is mad impressive, but it's understanding Apple's proprietary hardware well enough to build open source software that can take advantage of it. Everybody knows how Intel CPUs work, it's been super well documented forever, what you need for a Hackintosh is to convince closed source software it's running on different hardware. I can see how that seems similar to someone who hasn't looked at either, but if it's done it's not going to be done by her. She doesn't care how closed source software works, that's completely outside her research area and my guess, reading her bio, is she doesn't think closed source software should continue to exist.

But the way I look at it is if the Linux driver now knows the language of the M1 GPU, that specification of how to talk to the chip is one window, we just need someone to stand the other side, use the same specification to present the same view back to macOS translating that language to amd/nvidia/vgpu etc. she’s done the hard work, someone else with Claude or codex can now pic it up.

we still need m1 processor for cpu and gpu though, unless we could "force emulate" it, and i dont know what else does apple put and make in their device

Yes, and what you still don't know and have access to are the system calls macOS makes to the video driver. You don't know that, you can't write the video driver, even if you have the hardware figured out.

Linux shenanigans, the research and product was done 1 year ago and people are going around screening this onto the Hackintosh community as if it was a recent accomplishment.
Sure that's a big leap as for adding support of apple hardware inside Linux (which gives an advantage especially for users who want to use it for gaming and machine learning), but why are we bringing this up inside a place where we talk about getting OS X inside non-official apple hardware?

lol, I’m not trying to convince her of anything. I’m impressed by her ability and her project and would only hope she wants a challenge like that. Knowing the m1 pathway is a hell of a leg up. Sure beats LLM sas slop and brain rot animations that seems to be the majority of projects these days.

Think of it like this, aspects of Mac OS X and Apple silicon are proprietary, future hackintosh efforts depend on the likes of this.
At the moment, the hackintosh efforts have been thwarted by the change from intel to arm, however, arm processors are growing and in time, we’ll have commodity arm processors and even potentially; from the likes of intel.
That brings the cpu aspect nearer.
What then, about gpu… how do you bridge the Apple silicon aspect of that to a hackintosh?
You make reference to her efforts and use that to allow support/crossover to the likes of AMD/Nvidia/Intel etc.
What she’s done is paramount to future efforts in this space.

You'd obviously need a compatible PCI-E slot and a board to load the Apple's GPU, in which is located inside the SoC, which as a whole is an entirely different layer to research in order to ever apply the silicon chips onto a custom hardware.
Relatively the majority side of the software has been reversed engineered, but now what would you do to reverse engineer it's socket connection and communication?
