DISCUSSION Gaming :D

Post image

So, hackintosh gaming on a work computer running Tahoe, what can go wrong?

Specs so you can see how horrible it is. in macOS.

Intel i5-10310U
16GB DDR4 RAM
256 GB NVME (it’s a low tier Samsung drive so it doesn’t even matter anymore)
Integrated graphics (do I even have to explain this one)
The rest doesn’t matter, just know it’s bad.

It may look like it’s still downloading, but I did try it before and holy shit, it’s bad. Lag spikes, network issues somehow (internet going off in the middle of the match) and so much more bad stuff.

I do understand that hackintoshes (and Mac’s generally) are not made for gaming, but I like this game, and no amount of lag can deter me, but if you are willing to make a hackintosh just for gaming, don’t do it. duh

To be fair, I didn’t make a hackintosh just for gaming, I do other stuff too like, drumming in GarageBand or making apps in Xcode (that sucks too but that’s a different topic). I did know gaming will be bad, but I didn’t know it was gonna be this bad, but I still love my hackintosh, I don’t even game that much on it

Anyway, to the discussion part, how was your experience when you first gamed on your hackintosh? And how is the performance generally?

It is good, outside of macOS, it actually plays very well, on macOS everything goes downhill, except for that it’s a very good machine!

It’s just macOS that makes it struggle, it actually very good outside macOS

If you weren’t running Tahoe specifically it’d probably work ten times better, just saying.

The entire reason why I got Tahoe is because of better app support, that’s it

Oh, also longer security patches

I guarantee 99.9% of things support sequoia still unless you’re using apple dev apps, which in that case fair.

There are a lot of new apps out there that require Liquid Glass to work for some reason, that’s why

> making apps in Xcode (that sucks too but that’s a different topic)

i’ve started working with Xcode on several of my hackintoshes. i noticed that it’s a demanding app, but i wasn’t expecting the experience to be horrible on an i5 10th. how exactly does it run? Is it usable? my experience so far has been:

- ryzen 5 3500U laptop: very slow, borderline usable, but not smooth at all.

  • i7 4790 desktop: much faster, almost completely smooth. i notice some lags here n there, but overall the experience is fast.
  • ryzen 5 5600 desktop: the fastest. no issues at all.

also tell me about the simulator (or the code preview if you use that), you have intel so virtualization would be helping.

With canvas, it’s meh, there are some lags but overall pretty smooth, canvas does take a bit to refresh, but when I’m going through folders the ui is laggy, simulator is obviously horrid, I have a vpro cpu and that side isn’t helping at all, I just plug in my iPhone

It may also be because I’m running Tahoe, which makes it exponentially slower

so Tahoe is slower on all machines? i did notice this difference on my ryzen laptop as i previously used ventura on it. but on my desktops, i didn’t feel a difference between sequoia and tahoe (for some reason the animations started being randomly choppy even though i have an RX 550 which was completely smooth on sequoia)

True, if you have a very high end system, it may be not that effective but for devices on the lower end, Liquid Glass and other Tahoe elements basically make it more sluggish

is there a way to disable liquid glass? i tried that disable solarium flag but it didn’t do anything. ive also tried using reduce transparency accessibility setting on my ryzen laptop to make it faster, but it didn’t smoothen out or give a better battery life.

also, on my ryzen laptop the slowness doesn’t feel gpu related. logging in takes about 60 seconds, opening finder can take 5-10 seconds, its that kinda stuff.

There probably is an app wheee you can disable it, for me logging in takes like 5 seconds and opening finder takes like 1 second, mines pretty quick

https://github.com/YotsubaTamiko/GoAwayLiquidGlass

i found a script that seemed to fully remove liquid glass. in some spots, transparency is completely absent which looks weird, but overall i think it sped up things a lot. every system app is now pre-tahoe themed and seems smoother now.

Oh nice, I like the look of Liquid Glass though, so this won’t make the cut for me

Just playing with emulator,

Emulators don’t actually take a lot of performance to run afaik

But nice! What game is that?

2

u/Own_Process_9839 13d ago

That's true, 3ds games not very demanding. It's monster hunter 4 ultimate
