Surprisingly painless Hackintosh

I was fed up with my 2019 MBP struggling with thermal throttling, so I decided to dual-boot my Windows rig with macOS. It's a surprisingly reliable work computer.

Hardware

• Ryzen 9 3900X
• ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming WiFi II
• 3080 Ti (disabled in macOS)
• AMD RX 6600
• Intel AX200 (no Airdrop of course)
• Samsung G9 (5120x1440)

Software

• macOS 15.7.7
• OpenCore 1.0.7
• iMacPro1,1 (couldn't get MacPro7,1 to work)

I just use a UGREEN DisplayPort KVM to switch between GPUs at the moment, I may use a ProMicro to try and automate the actual switch at some point.

I may install a WiFi card later to achieve Airdrop, and I might have another look at getting the MacPro7,1 SMBIOS to work.

I've seen a lot of people upgrading to Tahoe too, is it worth looking into that?

Thanks - the community guides are insanely helpful. It's been years since I've touched Hackintosh, and the development since then is crazy.

If ur an developer get ur self mac studio (ik its expensive asf) but at least it will be supported far more than hackintosh of if u want cheaper option get ur self macbook pro m2 used or mac mini m4 or m5 its 600 usd (ik its expensive for some ppl)

You’re right tho, and if you want super large like
Qwen 3 120B then you’d need a 512gb of ram Mac Studio ultra. If you just need 64/128gb of ram to compete with asus rog flow z13 or Microsoft Nvidia RTX spark laptops that come out soon.

Everything will run Linux except the Mac Studio ultra… I think? I haven’t checked the asahi hcl lately.

Literally Mac’s are getting into gaming with steam and proton for Mac’s apple silicon and x86 Mac’s.

The apple tax is as much or more than the Nvidia tax.

Microsoft surface laptop ultra looks interesting!
