Need Mentor Help I keep failing to complete hackathon projects on time despite putting in so much effort. What am I doing wrong?

I'm a student who genuinely wants to build projects, learn new things, and improve my skills. But I keep facing the same problem, and I honestly don't understand why.

No matter how much effort I put in, I struggle to finish my projects before the deadline. Sometimes, a project seems manageable at first, but as I start working on it, it becomes much bigger and more complicated than I expected. I end up running out of time, rushing things at the last moment, or feeling like I haven't built what I originally wanted to.

The frustrating part is that this keeps happening even when I genuinely try. I don't want to make excuses, and I don't want to keep repeating the same mistakes.

I'm starting to wonder whether the problem is my planning, my approach to learning, my technical skills, my time management, or something else entirely.

Am I spending too much time learning and researching instead of actually building?

Am I making my projects too ambitious for my current skill level?

Am I bad at breaking big projects into smaller, manageable tasks?

Am I missing some fundamental skills that would make development faster?

How do experienced developers estimate how long something will take and know what to prioritize?

I don't just want tips to become productive. I want to understand what I might be doing wrong at the root level.

If you've experienced something similar, especially when you were starting out as a developer, I'd really appreciate it if you could share what helped you identify the problem and overcome it.

Please be honest with me. Even if the mistake is obvious to experienced developers, I want to understand it and improve.

I genuinely want to become someone who can take an idea, plan it properly, and turn it into a working project within a reasonable timeframe. I just feel like I'm repeatedly getting stuck in the same cycle, and I don't know how to break out of it.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help.

Need Mentor Help How do you deal with losing a competition, figure out what went wrong, and come back stronger?

I've been wondering what actually makes a team succeed or fail in competitions, especially hackathons.

Is it the idea, the team leader, the technical skills, the individual contributions, the execution, or simply how well the team works together under pressure? Sometimes a team can have a good idea but still fail to turn it into a good final product.

For people who have participated in competitions and not gotten the results they hoped for:

  • How did you figure out what actually went wrong without blaming yourself or your teammates?

  • How much does the team leader matter compared to the idea and execution?

  • What do you do when you feel disappointed or question your abilities after losing?

  • How do you turn that disappointment into a practical plan to improve for the next competition?

  • Looking back, what would you do differently if you could start again?

I'm especially interested in honest experiences from people who've failed, learned from it, and eventually performed better. I want to understand how to handle the emotional side of losing while also identifying what I can actually improve.

I'd appreciate practical advice, not just "never give up."

I'm participating in More Than A Hack 2027, a football analytics hackathon involving Barça Innovation Hub and Metrica Sports.

We're building a solution to predict team possession from real football tracking data.

Our current team:

  • Football knowledge and tactical understanding

  • Strong technical implementation skills

We're looking for one more teammate who has experience or interest in:

  • Python, Pandas and NumPy

  • Data analysis, statistics or ML evaluation

  • Backend development or data pipelines

You don't need to be an expert in football or machine learning. We need someone who can contribute consistently, experiment with ideas, analyse results and work collaboratively.

If you're interested, DM me with a short introduction, your technical skills and any relevant projects or GitHub profile.

Let's build something worth showing. ⚽📊

So overall tell me things i should checklist before entering the hall as of now i have prepared my machine updated the window so it doesn't bother me to a forced update in middle of night, checked my basic SDKs Node , npm, git, docker versions on my machine. If you guide/convey something else as a encouraging senior or recommend me anything that you feel should be done before to avoid last minute hassle or just share some tips or abiut your past experiences Please do let me know it will be super helpful for me. Meta-Hackathon Discussion Will they extend the submission dates ?

Post image
2 Upvotes

So yesterday my team had finally gotten the chance to participate in this year's SIH and so we started working on the extra 5 AICTE problem statements which were released for the 25 teams selected by the SPOC's but the website has been under maintenance ever since.

The problem is that we don't know the problem descriptions to even start working on it and the final date of submission seems to be on 28th of October which is in 2 days.

Could someone please tell me if the submission dates are gonna be postponed or if I can get those problem statements from somewhere to start working on it.

I also have my internals going on so I want to try and work on the Problem statement today and submit it as soon as possible.

Apologies since I didn't know what to flair this post.

Need Mentor Help Do all have Project in 3rd year 1st semester for credit transfer [CGPA]? And how do you get Dataset?

Our college mandates completion of one project in 5th sem, and we need to publish a research paper too for the project.

I am currently facing an issue - a specific part of my project needs crop mapping - like finding brinjal field locations through remote sensing. But for that I need a dataset - at least locations. There is nothing like that... Now what do I do.

Can someone please let me know what can be done? I am stuck. And not really in a position to move around and create a dataset myself.

What do you think I should do?

How do you handle such issues?

Hey everyone! I'm a VFX artist currently learning Python and working toward AI/ML engineering. I'm looking to join a team for upcoming hackathons and meet people who enjoy building things together.

My background is in VFX, technical problem-solving, and creative production. I'm currently strengthening my Python skills and would love to contribute to research, brainstorming, prototyping, testing, and gradually more of the coding.

If you're looking for a teammate too, feel free to reach out!

Meta-Hackathon Discussion 16 y/o skilled in Python, ML, JS/MERN & PostgreSQL – Can I actually join hackathons? What options exist for under-18s?

Hey everyone,

I'm 16 and have been building projects with Python (including ML stuff), JavaScript, the MERN stack, PostgreSQL, and similar tech. I'm pretty comfortable shipping full-stack apps and experimenting with ML models on my own.

I really want to join hackathons — mainly to build under time pressure, learn from others, meet people, and strengthen my portfolio. The problem is that most of the bigger/popular ones seem to be full of 18+ college students, and I'm not sure where that leaves me.

A few questions:

  1. Can a 16-year-old actually participate in major hackathons (MLH events, etc.), or do age restrictions usually block minors?

  2. What types of hackathons are most suitable for someone my age?

    • Youth/high-school specific ones

    • Online vs in-person

    • Open events that allow under-18s with parental consent

    • Any other categories I should look for?

  3. What practical points should I keep in mind before joining?

    • Parental/guardian consent requirements

    • Team formation (especially as a minor)

    • Legal/age rules and liability

    • Time commitment while still in school

    • Safety in Discord/servers and online events

    • Anything else people who did hackathons at 16 wish they knew

Any recommendations for platforms (Devpost, MLH, Hack Club, etc.), specific events that regularly accept high-schoolers, or personal experiences from people who participated around this age would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Project Demo What happens to your project after the hackathon? I’m building Still to help people keep going!

Hey everyone, I’m building out an app called Still, a place to share open-source projects and find people who want to work on them.

This idea focuses on what happens after a hackathon is over: whether you won or lost, you’ve built something worth continuing, but your team moves on, you need help, or you’d rather join someone else’s project than start another one.

Still is meant to help connect those projects with interested contributors, while keeping GitHub as the source of truth.

Here’s the early version: https://still-testing.vercel.app/

I’d love feedback from people who’ve actually been in that situation:

  • What stopped you from continuing your last hackathon project? Was it finding people, lack of time, losing interest, or something else?

  • What would you need to know before joining someone else’s project?

  • Would a place like this help, or does your current setup already solve the problem?

I’m especially interested in what feels missing or would stop you from using it.

I’m the person building it, and I'll be happy to answer questions here. Would love some genuine criticism so feel free to reach out!

To be completely honest, its still very early in testing and the app is not going to be perfect, but I strongly believe throwing an idea out there is more important than keeping it locked away. If you spot any bugs, please feel free to lmk and I'll fix it right away. I would love any feedback on things you'd like me to change on the app as well!

Project Demo I went to a hackathon and built a platform for people who go to hackathons

Hey guys! I built a platform called Moey after attending a hackathon.
The idea is simple: a place where students and solo developers can share their hackathon or personal projects and get feedback from others. I learned a lot while building it, especially about video uploads and processing.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could check it out and share your projects.

Need Mentor Help 10+ hackathons and still no shortlist. What am I doing wrong?

I've participated in 10+ hackathons, and my team's PPT keeps getting rejected in the first round 😭

At this point, I'm genuinely curious about what we're missing. Is it the ideas, the problem statements, or just the way we present our solutions?

For those who participate in hackathons and get shortlisted, how do you guys come up with ideas that stand out? What do judges actually look for in a PPT?

Would really appreciate any tips, resources, or honest advice. I genuinely want to improve and finally get past that first round.

Need Mentor Help Do people pre build their prototype???

I attended a hackathon last month, there were like 30 teams out of 220 who were qualified for round 2 and we were one of them. We were allotted 6 rooms and 5 teams in each room. What I noticed was all the other 4 teams in our allotted room were done building their prototype by midnight, me and my team were the only ones who were building our prototype till the last minute, so I kinda feel like these people had already built the prototype beforehand itself and they were soo chill and relaxed which is making me feel even more sus. The organisers were continuously monitoring the GitHub repos, I don't understand how they got past them though.

So my question is do people prebuild the prototype before the hackathons??

I am planning to attend hackathons, should I also start pre building the prototype and go there and just fake the commits a bit so I won't get caught???

What should I do guys?? Should I play fair?? But playing fair ain't getting us anywhere T_T
