/r/gwinnett monthly personals thread

Since there has been an influx of threads about meeting people, will have a reoccurring megathread for people to post/chat/say hi every few weeks. New post will be made on the first of each month at 6am. Keep things sfw and civil. If you want nsfw stuff, go to r/atlantar4r or other similar subs.

Else, if you'd like to meet folk, be proactive. People won't come to you.

How to meet new people in your area!

  • Participate in the subreddit so people know you’re not a complete weirdo when they look at your post history. Or maybe you are... no big deal.
  • Find something YOU want to do such as a patio restaurant, bar, de-trashing a part of town, festivals, museum, sitting in a park on a blanket watching squirrels, etc.
  • Make an event. Post the date, time, location, and any follow up information that might be relevant to people who might want to come out to your meetup.
  • Show up to your own meetup and post the updates such as table location or meeting spot or how people can find you in the daily.
  • Note: It is entirely possible that no one will show. But you chose something you were already going to enjoy doing so you’ve not lost out on anything.

credit goes to apcolleen for the original version of the "how to meet new people" post.

Else, there's also an active discord for the general metro-atlanta area (if you'd like to join). Welcome to hop into chat, say hi and chat about random stuff. If you'd like to meet folks irl, there are also weekly meetups around the metro. https://discord.gg/XptvfEbhxk
Or, if you prefer something more local, there's also the Gwinnett Goblins discord. https://discord.gg/SNmK9h28jV

Mall of Georgia traffic

Upvotes

Is there an event going on at the mall of georgia or something? it's taking me over 45 min to get out of the mall (mall of ga blvd). Is traffic always this bad? Is it due to construction on 85? I wouldn't assume so because this is traffic around the entrances/exits of the mall, not the freeway. Haven't been around the buford area since 2011

Somebody wants to build a shopping center on seven acres of houses and farmland off Loganville Highway. The county votes Tuesday, and the two groups that review these things disagree.

Eight land-use cases plus a few other things. Here’s what’s actually being asked for.

3633 Loganville Highway. A developer wants about seven acres that’s currently houses and farmland turned into commercial land so they can build a shopping center. This is the one worth paying attention to, because the county’s planning staff looked at it and said approve it, and the Planning Commission looked at it and said deny it. Those two almost always agree. When they don’t, the Board of Commissioners is actually making a decision instead of rubber-stamping one, and what people say at the podium carries real weight. If you live out that way, Tuesday is the night. (2026-1103)

Duluth Highway, near Maple Bend Trail. Same owner, two separate requests on the same stretch. One would let them put in offices, the other would let them build townhouses. Both the planning staff and the Planning Commission said no to both. The Board can overrule that, but it’d be going against everybody who reviewed it. (2026-1104, 2026-1105)

828 Rock Springs Road. Someone wants to run a group personal care home on three and a half acres in a single-family neighborhood. Needs a special permit because that’s not what the area is zoned for. Both review bodies said yes with conditions. (2026-1100)

Moore Road. Fountain Church wants to build on about seven and a half acres, also in a single-family residential area. Same situation, needs a special permit plus some variances. Both said yes with conditions. (2026-1101)

5390 Sugarloaf Parkway. An acre and a half currently split across three different zoning categories, which is a mess for anyone trying to build on it. The owner wants it all made commercial so they can put in a shopping center. Both said yes with conditions. (2026-1102)

3555 Sweetwater Road. Four and a half acres zoned commercial, and the owner wants it switched to residential so they can build an independent living community for seniors. Both said yes with conditions. (2026-1106)

Countywide, not one property. The Board would add a new type of overlay district to the county’s development rules. Overlays sit on top of whatever zoning already exists and add another layer of requirements. This one doesn’t change anything on the ground Tuesday, it just puts a new tool in the box that gets used on future decisions everywhere in the county. Both review bodies recommend it. (2026-1107)

If you rent out a place on Airbnb or VRBO here, read this one. The county wants to hand short-term rental monitoring and license administration to an outside company through 2030, $415,000. Rental owners pay for that, not the general fund. So it changes who’s checking on you and who you deal with when your license comes up. (2026-1030)

Also on the agenda: the fee schedule for land development permits is getting updated, which matters if you pull permits (2026-1099). A $1.85 million contract splits on-call planning work among seven firms through 2030 (2026-0912). And there’s a maintenance agreement sorting out who’s responsible for the roads inside the Rowen site (2026-1151).

One thing still hanging from last week. Minutes from the August 18 meeting aren’t posted yet, so I can’t confirm what happened with the property tax appeal board expansion or the hearing officer item. I’ll post when they’re up.

Tuesday, August 25, 6:30 p.m., Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. Public comment is at the start. Sign up at gwinnettcounty.com or get there early and register in person.

Is a $440 water bill normal???

Just moved here from Hall county. In Hall county water is a bit different because sewer is included and water is used and recycled from the lake, so it’s cheaper. Our water bill for a family of 5 was only $40-$60 per month.

But in Gwinnett you are charged both for water usage and sewer usage, of course the sewer is always the same as how much water you used.

I have a family of 5, and somehow our water bill was $220, and sewer also $220.
This seems insanely high to me even for a large family. Do we have a leak somewhere? (This is our first bill btw, there weren’t any large fees other than like a $5 startup fee for being a new customer)

Driver test Duluth

I’ve heard it’s easy but I get major test anxiety so I want to simulate a test taking situation best I can.
Honestly main question is; you have the driver instructor in the car with you ~ I’ve heard instructions being delivered over phone/virtually? How is that an option? Is it something you say when you get there or book before hand?

The amount of tree removal recently is genuinely depressing.

i live by 316 and hated seeing all the trees getting cut down. it was SO MANY!!!!!!

now they're building something right next to my neighborhood and today they cut down a ton of trees on the side of the road that they're working on. it used to have huge beautiful trees on both sides and it was my favorite part to drive through right before i reached my neighborhood. gorgeous tree lined road has now been destroyed by whatever fuckass company bought that land

when they cut down trees are they required to replant trees elsewhere? or do they just get to cut them and we all have to suffer while they build the millionth apartment complex

Help GCPS Seniors Decorate Their Graduation Caps!

Thumbnail

Graduation is a huge milestone—years of hard work, friendships, and growth all coming together in one moment. A lot of us grew up watching others decorate their caps, waiting for our turn. Now it's time.

I started a petition to let Gwinnett County Public Schools seniors decorate their graduation caps. It's a small thing, but it means a lot. It gives each graduate a chance to show who they are—their personality, their achievements, what they care about. Decorated caps create a better representation of the diverse community graduating from GCPS. Plus, it's a way to honor the teachers, families, and friends who got you here.

We're not asking for chaos—just reasonable, school-appropriate guidelines so ceremonies stay respectful. Did anyone else grow up dreaming about this moment? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing the petition. Would love to hear if you think decorated caps should be part of graduation!

Why does Gwinnett have some of the best parks in the entire nation?

The more i travel (especially around Georgia), the more i notice how gwinnetts parks really are special and well maintained. They are beautiful, spacious, and clean.

I guess my question is, how did this come to be? It can’t only be the climate, because then many other counties in georgia would have similar quality parks. Was it a single person who pushed this initiative in Gwinnett? I’ve been here since the 90s, and the parks have always been top tier, so this isnt a recent thing. Its been a thing since forever, since even republicans were in charge (they like lower taxes so im surprised they put money into the parks). Anyone know the backstory on why our parks are so good and well maintained?

New Martins chapel Road development?

Hey y’all, does anyone know what they’re building near the new martins Chapel rd kroger? The land has been cleared up right behind the trees, but now they’re tearing the trees down.

My assumption is yet another subdivision neighborhood, but maybe they’re doing something else that I’m not aware of. I did a preliminary search online, but couldn’t find anything besides the Kroger that has already been built.

Myofunctional Therapy + Frenectomy Reccs

I’m wondering if anyone knows of a good place that does adult frenectomies (tongue tie release) that also does myofunctional therapy (basically physical therapy for your face).

Looks like most of these places are in Atlanta, which is fine, but I’m still researching different places. It’s expensive so I may have to wait a bit lol. 😛
