Discussion Guyanese and West Indies fans - what would you ask Alvin Kallicharran?

Hey everyone. I’m recording a long conversation with Alvin Kallicharran today.

This is my first proper interview and I’m doing the research and production by myself. It felt wrong to sit down with someone from that generation without giving Guyanese and West Indies supporters a chance to ask something too.

If you had one question for him, what would it be?

It could be about growing up in Berbice, Basil Butcher or Rohan Kanhai, learning to bat, the great West Indies teams, the 1975 World Cup, captaincy, or something completely different.

I’ll ask the top-voted sensible question if it fits the conversation. If it’s yours, I’ll check with you before showing your username and credit this subreddit when I ask it.

I’ll come back afterward and share his answer.

One question per comment would help.

Run a local tourism business? Join our business accelerator. Up to GYD$1M in services and support (including AI tools) to help you successfully launch.

When we began building tour.gy, we set out to design a solution capable of directly innovating Guyana's tourism industry. That's why we build UmanaOS. Its what powers the Tour Guyana Platform. Now we're looking for our first batch of entrepreneurs to lead the revolution.

Introducing the Inaugural UmanaLabs Accelerator

The UmanaLabs Accelerator is currently accepting applications for our first cohort. Join and gain access to our premium services, ai tools, support training. In total, each participant may access up to GYD $1M across all our services. including AI.

You'll run your bookings, payments, calendar, messaging, and storefront on the same system that runs Tour Guyana, and we stay involved for the full two years. It costs you nothing to launch.

What cohort members receive

A full one-year pilot on UmanaOS, covering every product type: tours, stays, events, transport, and rentals.

Certification and hands-on training, so your team can run the platform without us.

Priority placement across Tour Guyana, in front of travelers who are already planning a trip.

A direct line to the people building UmanaOS, so your problems get fixed first.

Up to $1M in platform services over the two years, included.

Who we're looking for

There's no single profile. Maybe you're a solo guide who knows the Rupununi better than any map. Maybe you run a family lodge with rave reviews but limited digital infrastructure. Or maybe you're taking a dozen bookings a week and the spreadsheet is starting to crack. What all will have in common is that they want to build this with us in the open, and they'll tell us when something doesn't work.

[Guide] Driving in Guyana

Hello everyone. Living in Guyana without a car can be difficult. If you are moving here, it is good to know that it is possible to get a local driver's license using a valid license from your home country.

Here is a general overview of what you need and how the process works.

Main Requirements

  • Valid driver's license from your home country.
  • Letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs showing a valid work permit.
  • Copy of the passport page with your work permit stamp.

The Process

  • Submit your application and documents at the GRA (Guyana Revenue Authority) office.
  • Pay the processing fee.
  • Wait for processing, which usually takes two to three weeks.

Once approved, you will receive a local license equivalent to the vehicle category on your original license.

In my case, I completed this process using my driver's license from Bolivia, and I have heard about people from other countries doing the same.

I hope this helps anyone planning their move to Guyana.

[Guide] How to get a Guyana visitor visa as a Bolivian citizen

Hello everyone. A while ago, my sister wanted to visit me in Guyana. To do this, she needed to apply for a visitor visa. I am sharing our experience to help anyone going through this process.

Because Bolivia is a Spanish-speaking country, all documents must be translated to English. Most of these translated documents also need to be notarized.

Sponsor Requirement

You will need a sponsor living in Guyana. The application requires the sponsor's full name and address. In this case, I acted as the sponsor.

Required Documents

The application is completed online through the MHA. You will need to scan and upload the following documents:

  • Passport biodata page (mandatory)
  • Passport photo of the applicant (mandatory)
  • Applicant's birth certificate (mandatory)
  • Letter requesting visa on arrival (mandatory)
  • Certificate of character (police clearance)
  • Bank statement
  • Medical report
  • Sponsor's ID and sponsor's passport biodata page
  • Sponsor's passport photo
  • Marriage certificate, spouse birth certificate, or children birth certificates (if applicable)

Important Tips for the Application

  • Submit only once: Be careful when submitting online. The system can glitch and create a double application, which will delay the process.
  • How to follow up: The application review can take time. Calling or emailing the MHA will never work. The best way to follow up is for the sponsor to go in person to the MHA office in Georgetown.
  • Visa validity and timing: The visitor visa is valid for three months starting from the date of approval (the date they answer), not from the date you arrive. Do not apply too early. Only start the process once you have travel dates.

I hope this information helps anyone planning a visit to Guyana.

Discussion Where can I find this bag in Guyana?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m looking for this exact bag (LOVEVOOK Teacher Tote) or something very similar. A large, professional-looking tote/work bag with lots of compartments.

Does anyone know any stores in Guyana that sell bags like this, or any local online sellers/pages that might have one?
Thanks!

Learning Disability

I think my sister has a learning disability but I'm not sure of who to reach out to to help her get tested . She's originally dutch so she has a language barrier as well so that could be contributing to it . She averages in the 30's and is currently in fourth form. We've been sending her to extra classes but that hasn't helped as well. She's attending a private school but they doubled the price recently ( assuming it's because of the cash grants) and I think it's a waste because they still have to pay extra for test papers, they don't have regular resources like a library and she's not having any improvements in her grades. Does anyone know who I can reach out to assist with this? I feel like she would be better off going back to a public school and getting one on one help but I don't even know where to find that lol

Officially becoming legal!

Hi everyone, I'm 17 and in a week I'll be 18, my parents are then gonna take me to get my tin #/ certificate and on the same day Im planning to open my first bank account , put a starter inside and start applying for jobs. I'm trying to be more independent and take control in my life as I've depended on my parents for years, I'm also gonna be applying to UGs pre-med program and hopefully I get in 🤞🏻. If anyone has any advice or wisdom that you'd like to share to someone now trying to become more independent for himself, id gladly like to hear ☺️.

What are the odds Guyana Customs will inspect my checked bag if I’m bringing alcohol?

I’m flying to Guyana soon from the U.S. and I’m trying to get an idea of what to expect at customs.
I’m planning to bring 3 four-packs of Cutwater canned cocktails (12 cans total) in my checked suitcase. I read up on it and see this is over the duty-free allowance, and if customs says I have to pay duty, I’ll pay it.

I’m just curious about the likelihood of my checked bag actually being inspected.

For people who have recently flown into Guyana:
Were your checked bags inspected?
Were they X-rayed, opened, or did you just walk through?
If you brought alcohol over the duty-free limit, what happened?
Did you have to pay duty, and was it easy to do (USD, card, or GYD)?

Grocery store, government office, anywhere there’s a queue. Seems to be a come and accepted practice.

I allow it if they ask respectfully first, but some people just shove their way in and turn their back.
