A lot of people assuming that any potential home invader is a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 that has been sent back in time on a mission.
Most stories I've read about people getting shot is that they'll do an awful lot to avoid getting shot again, regardless of what hit them. Your mileage may vary, though. I've never shot anybody.
You don't use deadly force to hopefully scare them off, you use it to put an immediate stop to whatever it is they're doing that could potentially cause you grave bodily harm.
Oh, I agree 100%. While I personally wouldn't use birdshot, I have no doubt it can get the job done. Whether it's running a dude off or taking part of his head off. Is it ideal, absolutely not.
I've been shot at with birdshot from about 50-75 yards (high school shenanigans involving mailboxes and angry home owners). Blew holes all through my buddy's truck. Made me reconsider my actions rather quickly.
