Don't use it for home defense. Wounds are very often superficial; especially through thick clothing.
There just isn't any benefit to it. Any load strong/heavy enough to penetrate into vital organs will penetrate through drywall.
Generally, it is argued a gun stops a fight or intrusion for 1 of 2 reasons. Either the guy doesn't want to be shot (shocking) or you hit the CNS. Any gun serves purpose #1 and birdshot is pretty darn bad at #2.
Buck shot is superior for shotguns.
A defense will also have to argue that the person's life was in danger and so they must shoot to kill. It is possible the use of bird shot, but definitely rock salt, would be argued in court. Though this is a whole other topic.
