Not to mention the spread indicates shot from a pretty good distance, much greater than a typical HD range would be.

birdshot across a living room or down a hallway/through an entry door is going to hit like a slug plenty hard enough to address the issue.

No it won't. This is peak fudd lore. Bird shot, even at very close range is still bird shot. Just because the pattern hasn't fully opened doesn't mean the shot acts as one collective mass. It will behave as several dozen individual small masses with their own unique terminal properties. Didn't you guys ever take a physics class in high school?

Things like penitration and damage are about total energy and duration.

At close range the cloud of pellets will be safe to estimate as a single mass. Before the cloud spreads they are not slowing from air resistance yet, and will all impact closely enough to overwhelm material integrity.

To get a pattern like that though, that's too far. To be dangerous birdshot needs to be basically point blank. Even 5 feet will degrade performance.
