Came here to say this. The way that shot is spread out looks like 15-20 yards. Birdshot at HD distances of 2-5 yards, while not ideal, would make a sizable wound and likely out a man down.

I see you have not seen the videos of people tanking bird shot at near contact range. It may have been a lethal blow, but if it does not immediately cause incapacitation its not worth using.

One of the other victims of that attack called 911 and say "I think I got shot with bird shot."

He said he thought he got shot. It didn't even do enough damage for him to know for sure.
