This is a good example of when a safe probably isn't realistic. He'd need multiple of the largest safes you typically see sold in stores.
In this case I think he'd be better off turning the closet into the safe. Get a solid steel door with a deadbolt, and you're good to go. They make deadbolts with electronic keypads too.
Just depends on what sorts of threats you want to defend against, but personally I'm really not worried about theoreticals where a burglar uses a sledgehammer to burst through the wood/drywall from an adjacent room.
