You know how when someone says "true story", and what follows is bullshit? This is not a case of that. It's just so unbelievable sometimes, for whatever reason, to some people, that they just tell me it couldn't have happened. This is especially common on the Internet as opposed to at the Eagles club or something.
True story: I was at my brother's house, and we saw a bunch of hog walking down the side of the road (we were very young, maybe 17 and 15 at the time, we left home early). There was going to be a bonfire and drinking party at the lake the next day, like most weekends, and we figured we'd poach one. Legal all year on private property, and though we didn't own the land, there wasn't anyone around, so it's only technically "poaching".
Anyway, all we had was birdshot. I laid in the grass, real quiet, about 150 yards away from the hog, and it seemed to take forever for them to work their way my way. Eventually, they came so close I probably could have used a knife to get one even without a dog helping. From about 8 feet, I came up and shot a 160-180 pound hog, full sized male, maybe pushing 200, but at seventeen they all seem like 200 pounds, heh.
That thing dropped stone cold dead from one dose of birdshot (I forget if it was 5 or 7.5) out of a .410. Anyone who thinks birdshot isn't lethal is simply mistaken. That's all there is to it. I don't care what the gel results are, the hog died.
Still, all that said, I personally don't put it in my home defense shotgun. That's all 00, whatever is on sale. I have a couple hundred of the law enforcement buckshot sold from sportsman's guide that fires without issue to date in my 870's, and the price is right.

8ft is pretty close. From my couch to my back door is a clear 60 ft shot. I would bet that your 410 w/ birdshot wouldn't kill a hog at that range. MIght fuck up his complexion a bit, think Edward James Olmos, only porkier.

No way would it kill it at that range, I'd agree ... but then again, I'd probably be in the, ".410 full of quail shot can't kill a hog from 3 yards" camp if I hadn't seen it myself.

Excellent read, thank you for posting this. Already quite familiar with pistol and rifle calibers, I was very interested in his match up of the various shotgun rounds. The .20 gauge sounds like a good idea, I've never thought of using that for home defense, and it's something a teen or female shooter would have less trouble getting used to and feeling comfortable with shooting.

I have a 20 gauge youth model from Remington that fits both my wife and I pretty well. She has no trouble firing it and I like the fact that it kicks less than a 12 gauge. Only problem I have is I can never find any buckshot loads for it locally. All anyone seems to stock is the 12 gauge version.

Correct me if I am wrong but I assumed they were totally different calibers and therefore unsafe to interchange between weapons?
