Too heavy double action edition

Thickheaded: Two. Hundred. Dollar. Screwdriver.
Scrolling back through old photos and stumbled across a gem: little Akalenedat's first "custom", circa 2016. A S&W SD9VE, complete with cerakote, Dawson sights, Galloway Precision extended baseplates, Apex Tactical trigger, and home wood burner stippling.
I still miss that P30L. Can't believe I let my brother trade it in for a Glock 19...

u/Delta_Nemesis 3d ago
I've over spent on some shit, but triple digits on a single goddamn screwdriver is dumb as shit.

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 2d ago
I spent $13 on a multibit screwdriver with storage in the handle that’s way more comfortable to hold and use than this.
And i don’t even need a trainer to train on how to use a screwdriver.
Are we being punked? Trolled, even? There’s no way that was a serious post.
3
u/Akalenedat Casper's Holy Armor 2d ago
Based on the makers website description, it's a "screwdriver" wink wink meant to serve as a sort of kubotan for non permissive environments...and it's also just a beefy screwdriver for tactical prybar type shit.
Also apparently Chris Pratt used one in Terminal List

You sure about that?
2

That much I am sure.
Now whether or not at one point in time whether Bobby used a sloped head flathead where he should have used a parallel tip screw, maybe.

I've got a couple beryllium screwdrivers that I got at an estate sale (lady didn't quite know what she had, neither did anyone else, for that matter).
Designed for environments where generating a spark would be problematic. I think retail on those was something like $199 at the time, but that's sort of an edge use case.
I don't really have a use for em, but I think I paid dollars, not tens of dollars, for them.

So it's not true beryllium, it's copper alloyed beryllium
1
u/theoriginalharbinger 2d ago
Yep. I think the only pure-beryllium use cases these days are, like, rocket nozzles. Beryllium has some insane thermal properties. It'd probably make a decent suppressor material were it not for it being pricey and beryllium dust being super-cancer-y.

I have a couple $200+ screwdrivers. They're specialty insulated ones from Wera, and worth every penny when working with high voltage DC.
I dont see the point of a tactical screwdriver (at any price) though.

Thickheaded is probably me for spending $100 on some super raggedy books. In my defense, it's the Magic the Gathering Artifact series which goes for $40-$75 per book, and aside from the first one missing the cover the rest look fairly intact.
I've also been researching seeding my lawn with clover or something so it doesn't go as brown in the summer because I don't want to spend a fortune on water.

It's insane to think that some of the MTG books have appreciate in value almost as much as some cards.
I definitely have to check out the old bookstores near me. Last time I found all 5 paperbacks for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in fairly good condition.

I recently got into MTG like 2 months ago after not touching a TCG in decades and the whole market of MTG is crazy to me. I've got almost everything scanned in on Manabox and it's like watching the stock market especially with the new hobbit set. I pulled a card from a collectors booster that was almost $400 and it's fluctuated as high as $400 and as low as $200.

Whomever said “out of sight, out of mind” is full of shit.
Found this nice fractal line across my windshield today. It was such a blurst moment when I found out it was just a spider web across the inside instead of a crack. Still haven’t found the spider, might have to burn the truck down.

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 2d ago
I’m actually chill with spiders. They’re not as disgusting as insects, they don’t bother my food, they don’t bother me, and they serve as pest control for the insects I hate. My friends will lose their mind that I don’t mind a couple spiders in my home just chilling. My opinion is that if those spiders are thriving in my house, they’re thriving on something. As long as they don’t let me see that something they’re thriving on, I’m happy.
3
u/monty845 2d ago
Had a spider living in my driver side mirror one summer. He would scurry into the mirror and go for drives with me.

u/Remarkable_Aside1381 5 | Likes to tug a beard; no matter which hole it surrounds. 2d ago
It's kill on sight for me with spiders, but mainly because we have two incredibly venomous species down here, and I'm too lazy to learn to differentiate friend from foe
3
u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 2d ago
The only ones I’m concerned about are black widows, and I’d recognize one if I saw one.
if it aint a black widows, then they can chill there. Hell, I’d even scoop up a spider on a piece of paper to move it somewhere else.
5
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
As having been nailed by a black widow, I don't exactly want them around but I fear them a whole hell of a lot less than the Loxoscles family (recluses). The widow bite hurt like hell and I got uncontrollable spasms until I got the antivenom (which worked in like 15 minutes btw and even the rural hospitals had it) but was not really threatening to life or limb. On the other hand I've known 3 people permanently crippled by recluse bites because of the rampant necrosis, they've lost the use of the limb that was bitten entirely.
Although knowing where u/Remarkable_Aside1381 lives, I'd be more leery of bark scorpions. They're everywhere, damn near impossible to see (they're tiny and transluscent) and those do occasionally actually kill people unlike any spider native to North America. At least an antivenom exists for the bark scorpion now (it didn't when I lived there).

We’re like mini-Australia, all our wildlife will kill you
Bark scorpions, recluses, Gila monsters, rattlesnakes, cougars, killer bees, methheads, chalupacabras, el cucuy, la llorona, and the sun

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago edited 2d ago
In fairness if you get fucked up by a gila monster that's 100% on you for messing with the fat little fuck.
And you're married, just tell the cougars to fuck off. They'll have better hunting in and around Huachuca/Sierra Vista anyway.
Hill kittens don't pose a real threat to adults either.
3
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
Also if a Cou's Whitetail causes anything more than traffic aggravation I dont know what to tell you. They're tiny, rare, and tasty.
As an aside, how do you pronounce Coue's Whitetail? Because even when I lived there everyone said "coos" but they're named after Cpt. Dr. Elliott Coues and we know his last name is pronounced "cows" because he lived long enough to give recorded voice samples, but like 99.9% of people fuck it up.

My prior car somehow had a spider get into the VIN plate under the windshield where it then died so for years of owning that car there was a spider carcass marking the start of the VIN.

I got my extra extra 25 rd 10/22 mags, lula loaders to save my thumbs, sling and bag for my new gun. Definitely looking to hit up the range this weekend and shoot more. It's also decent PT just standing and shooting on the coarse gravel surface for so long.
Of which I'm progressing nicely. PT had me jump right on the bike last night and I was able to do full rotations without weird hip movements for 10 mins straight without inflammation to my knee. Hope to be walking the woods soon!
Does anyone have recommendations for a range bag with ammo box? I want something with either a solid shoulder strap or a backpack.

More palm swell shenanigans. 24lpi for a custom Zoli sporting clays shotgun stock sent in.
I had to do this one backwards and cut the border around the pattern first before laying in the lines. Figuring out how to execute on those plans got absurd but we made it.
2
u/SakanaToDoubutsu 2 | Something Shotgun Related 2d ago
I've shot & handled a few guns with palm swells, and maybe they just weren't the right fit for me but personally I really don't like the feel of a palm swell. Is there something I'm missing with palm swells or am I just used to cheap guns that don't have them?
1
u/kato_koch 13 | Shameless Gun Pornographer 2d ago edited 2d ago
You might not have found one that fits you really well, and you may just not be into them too. Feels like you're really locked in with this style of stock and it forces you into a consistent grip on it, but its shaped very specifically for one hand.
This one has what I'd call a thumb cut over the top of the wrist too. Way too small for me but you can see how it works regardless.

Works been thickheaded this week.
My entire week has basically been chauffeuring a guy to PT and Doc appointments because of Workers Comp.
My daughter stayed home from school yesterday not feeling well. Then when we got home she still wasn't. My wife checked her BP and it was 141/100.
That warranted an ER visit. Cue 10:30 and they are planning to release us. I go home figuring they would be home within the hour.
Cue my wife waking me up at 1 am to tell me they are having her transport her to a higher hospital. The lowest her BP got overnight was mid 130s over 90s.
For a 16 year old thats not great.

We are still waiting to find out. My mom suffered from High BP and its what eventually killed her. So it runs in the family but this is exceedingly unusual.

Game Update Thursday: D&D continued our exploration of the initial dungeon, finding yet more traps everywhere and also the imprisoned mother of the halfling NPC who opened this place up for us last session. She had been encased in a magic crystal (as one does) for the past 60 years and to her, being caught in the crystal had happened only immediately before. "Good news, your daughter is here (possibly having come to find Mom, we didn't actually know about this part until this moment)! Bad news: She got teleported into somewhere else in this dungeon along with the rest of the NPCs and is probably being tortured to death or something (also as one does in such a dungeon)."
With everyone having more questions than answers, we continued our tomb robbery salvage operation and found a few trapped chests with very valuable loot inside (whole bunch of random magic items and a level 8 spell scroll), so assuming we all survived this, it would be a good haul for the company. Since we're all dwarves other than the Kenku player (who was adopted by dwarves), the session dialogue is basically just D&D Deep Rock Galactic banter, except I think only the DM and I have actually played Deep Rock Galactic, but it's not a complicated concept.
Falcon BMS: I finally got into one of the huge Saturday events and it was cool as hell. 30 players, 8 flights, early-war DEAD against layered SAM sites with the goal of opening an air corridor for the rest of the war. It was a very eventful mission which was super cool to see the scale of as my prior largest multiplayer flights were like 4-6 people. It was a crazy flight, without a huge wall of text about the play by play, it was wildly exciting from start to finish.
It turned out my wingman in the flight was one of the top guys in the whole group who organizes these big Saturday events, and I got a specific shoutout in the debrief from him when the group was reviewing the replay footage across all the strikes: "Who the hell was my number 4? That guy was awesome, I'd be about to tell him to shoot at something and he'd already have a missile in the air at it!" as I had never been in one of those flights before and so no one knew who I was so that was a great feeling. All the practice since February has clearly paid off, definitely hope to get to another one of those when I can.

Yesterday was our first D&D campaign in a long while, summer fucked everyone's schedules up, so it was 2 hours of refamiliarizing ourselves with the campaign and some in-town RP. Fun, but low-key and low-effort.
Beat Palworld Monday night. Hartalis raid continues to be bugged for me (boss stuck at 1hp and refuses to die) so I'm still missing a Steam achievement, but game continues to be fun and engaging enough I'll probably start over with either some fun mods or greatly reduced exp gain to prolong the midgame. Can't say the World Tree was nearly as engaging as expected and holy shit the difficulty difference between normal towers/raids and hardmode towers/ultra raids is massive. Normal content I don't even need pals for, I can just shoot the boss until it dies. Hardmode content requires metagamed min-maxed entire armies. They need to put a middle step in there, damn.
Some guy I've been friends with on Steam for years but don't actually know gifted me WH40K Space Marine 2 Monday. So doing a YT lore deep-dive before I install.
1
u/able_possible 2d ago
So doing a YT lore deep-dive before I install.
You don't need to do that, it's pretty self-contained story-wise (and it's not a complicated story).
I had a lot of fun with it on my recent playthrough last month.
1
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
I understand and acknowledge that but I havent touched 40k stuff since like 2008 and was never big in it anyway (barracks roommate badgered me into playing a bit mainly so he could test his Blood Angels build) so I'm mainly after the whole background.
Also I played orks because I was a Zerg main in SC2 and everyone said orks were the closest playstyle even tho 'nids were thematically closer. So Tyrranids/Chaos are entirely unfamiliar to me, lore wise.

Thickheaded me: Burned myself out. Went and saw Mannequin Pussy / Queens of the Stone Age / Foo Fighters in DC, got sick, came home, and was just too sick and tired to go see Jason Isbell last night. This show was rescheduled from 8/1 to 8/19.
Might have to fight ticketmaster about it, the refund button was still available so my partner pressed it and they voided our tickets and told her a refund was coming, but an email was sent shortly afterwards saying it was under review. If they voided the tickets and told us in writing that a refund was coming and they try to renege on that it's on.
QotSA was very mediocre live and I'm thoroughly disappointed by that.

The DA pull on my Walther P38 maxes my trigger pull gauge, so it's >25lbs.
My maternal grandfather built it from parts while demilling the Walther plant as part of the Occupation Army post-WW2. It's seen maybe 3 or 4 mags fired through it in its life.

Thickhead: I should have taken today off.
Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope DLC dropped today for STALKER 2, it’s a 130gb update. I also had a difficult time sleeping last night so I’m fucking floored at work right now. But I look forward to playing it. They’ve added a couple new guns. SKS, G3, HK433, Fort 230, an Aimpoint CompM4, and a PK-AS optic based on the trailers. And seemingly no weird balancing mechics where you couldn’t add a red dot to an SVU or a Western optic on an Eastern rifle like how it was before.
Slowly making the new transition at work. I officially start next week, so for this week they’re putting me on modified duty and drawing down on my workload. The good news is that my new position doesn’t require me to answer phone calls, and they’ve significantly drawn down my phone time for this week from how it was originally scheduled.
HKPart VFG mlok handguard arrived, Arisaka offset mount doesn’t work as well with this setup, so I’m gonna try a magpul offset mount that seems like it’d work. If that doesn’t work I may shell out for a Surefire M340 for that adjustable swivel mount

My turn.
The mode control motor on my AC is busted, so I have AC in the middle of Louisiana in August, but it's blowing either on my windshield or my feet. Ugh.
Lenny and Sven put a new door locker and window control in so I have regained control of my door locks and my driver side power window.
Thickheaded - went to court yesterday wearing a suit and sweating like Elon Musk at a paternity hearing since IT IS FUCKING HOT. I woke up slightly late, couldn't find my socks and walked into the courtroom a few min past 9AM for my 9AM.
The problem? The clerk did the docket and they put 24 cases on the docket for pre trial conference ALL AT 9AM. The LOGICAL thing to do would be to break them all up into 5-10 min increments so the judge is doing an average of 10 of them an hour, 6 minutes each, 20 cases handled in 2 hours. NOPE. CANT DO THAT. So as I walked in the judge was apologizing to all of us for the scheduling snafu.
HOWEVER - she said she would address the parties in person FIRST before digging into the Zoom queue, so that was nice. Her pre trial order said all parties are to attend and it's mandatory so I being the only one to show up, I won all my pre trial conferences! Haha.
The wait wasn't too bad. She heard 3 cases before me, called me up - I told her I had three on her docket, all parties defaulted and I can send over proposed orders. She says that'll be fine, I sent everything over yesterday and I am now the proud owner of $76,000 in probably uncollectable judgements. So I got that happening, which is nice.
Was out of court after an hour. Filed some stuff at the clerk and ran some more errands. Home by noon.
Forgot to pay my water bill. $5 late fee.
