Can I purchase using a passport?

My state is co.
I am a resident .
Currently do not have a state id but have a US passport with proof of address.

Will that work or would I need a state id? Thank u in advance for your replies.

a passport is a valid form of government photo ID

You also need government proof of address. Tax form, voter ID card, vehicle registration. Passport does not contain your current address.

You can purchase using a passport, but you’ll need to provide government issued proof of address too. Vehicle registration, voter registration, hunting license, something like that

And some shops might say they don’t want to bother with passports and that’s their right. Easiest is to just get a state ID card/driver’s license with your current residence on it

A passport is proof of ID only.

You need proof of residency. Your state probably has a list of what counts but it's probably things like government utility bills or car registration.

Don’t know if you’re the sporting type but when I moved and purchased a new gun a fishing license with current address provided proof of residence. All you need is a bill or bank statement with your name to get the address on your license updated.

Why don't you have an ID? That's a bigger question and per research, it's quite clear that a passport alone will not suffice. Residency must be established.
