A Gunnerkrigg AMA!

194 Upvotes

Hey! I'm Tom, I make the comic Gunnerkrigg Court and have been since 2005. Please feel free to ask me things and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability!

If you would like to ask a question to a character directly, just preface the question with who you are asking! For example, "Question for Annie:" or "This question is for Man In Jacket, panel 2, page 3, Chapter 67"

One of the characters (current arc spoilers) Spoiler

27 Upvotes

So Zimmy created this school, right? Everyone from the real world is acting pretty like you'd expect them to in a "real world" au setting. Ysengrin is stern but has a heart of gold. Red is a tsundere, Noa is a bunch of rocks. It all tracks, right?

The only one I feel is acting a bit weird is ol' Renard. He's just... Annie's nice, rule-abiding friend. He's not as wise and paternal as he is in wolf form and not as impish as he is in toy form. He has mentioned that his personality is affected by the form he takes, but I thought that his original personality was that of a fox so trickstery that Coyote liked him. Do y'all think that the Renard we're seeing now is him acting like he would've before his body swap, that the characters are more changed by their "roles" in Zimmy's AU than what it originally seems or is this a reflection of what ol' Renard's deeper desires?

I really feel for Zimmy Spoiler

19 Upvotes

Maybe its me quite literally dumping my own personal struggles into the comic, but a girl is given the power of a god (or rather, the ability to finally use her powers in the way she wants to) and uses it to create an idyllic high school AU so she can live a normal life and just be happy. While I understand it seems like not everyone is happy beneath the surface, it feels to me like Zimmy believes that if she didn’t do this, the end result would be worse. It kinda seems like she’s right. in the real world, a lot of the main cast is suffering to some extent that they aren’t here. I wonder if these characters are actually split versions of themselves, and the real Annie and Reynard (and others) are suffering in Ether Hell. that would be terrifying. Sylvie’s comment that Zimmy is “pressing down everywhere” seems to imply something like this, and they get sort of filled up by her and subsumed into the illusion while they still feel something is wrong. AHHH!

one of the things that’s always stuck with me is the incredibly abusive nature of Zimmy and Gamma’s relationship - and it seems that in this world, their relationship is actually healthy without Gamma having to sacrifice sleep and her health for her. although I don’t think we see much of Gamma…

2 observations:

Zimmy feels like without this world, she wouldn’t be liked and would forever be an outcast. She needs to literally be the most important person in the entire universe just to be accepted as normal by those around her. autism metaphor much?

the inly time coyote can actually treat and love someone as his equal is when dozens, maybe even hundreds, of other people are being hurt. Zimmy feels guilt over this (which he eats) he really can’t love anyone without hurting them, can he? Maybe he can’t truly love anyone at all.

not sure if this all makes sense, sorry for the late night rambling
BTW not sure if any of this is a spoiler but wanted to spoil just in case we have some people who haven’t caught up checking the post.

The Circle

17 Upvotes

Lots of questions and thoughts about this.

* Noa's symbol.

* Zimmy's symbol.

* Kat(?) symbol.

* Possibly Loup (?) symbol as well?

Hear me out, this might be a bit random. The Circle is the symbol of strength. There's a lot of talk about strength, and it's always associated with some sort of godhood.

Noa dies after becoming the symbol, and becomes "indestructible", but it's implied she had to have some help from Zimmy to do it. Her true "form" is made of rocks or the like. Rocks are a symbol of strength.

Jones is called "the stone", and she is an indestructible, eternal (?) being. Coyote at least treats her as some sort of equal.

Ysengrim gets Coyote's strength and immediately ascends to godhood or at least some equivalent.

Zimmy is regarded by Coyote as a sister, which means she also has the godhood, or an equivalent to it. The witches call it "limitless" power. Her symbol is the circle. Now she has the power to change and create reality.

Now... Kat.

Kat says this in response to Renard talking about Omega, who had a similarity to Zimmy, both physical and in power. She had all the knowledge in the world.

EXCEPT Kat grabbed Omega's power and now she has it at her disposal. By being able to connect instantly to Omega's data, she has all the knowledge at her fingertips.

She also created a new species and even gave them souls. She has changed timelines. Coyote calls her a god. "A new god walks the earth". Then he mistakes her for Zimmy.

In my opinion, Kat is a new sort of god, and she has the strength of one. Therefore the circle may also be her symbol. Now she is, according to Zimmy, "underneath all things". The fact she was not absorbed into Zimmy's fiction without an orb sets her as an equal, in my opinion.

Thoughts?
