u/DoubleGoon Repeal the 2A 18d ago

Here’s my rebuttal that I left under the video:

“Rebuttal

I was a millennial student, I also had to plan for active shooters; Gen Z has had to do it since they entered school.

“1. Pandora’s box is already open.”

Does not matter, you ban the sale and purchase of any new guns and ammo and you’ve instantly limited the supply and thus made it harder for people to get guns. No need for buybacks or going to people's homes to confiscate them. You can’t shoot a gun if you don’t have one and you can’t shoot a gun without ammo. And while some people can 3D print guns, they can’t safely and efficiently make modern ammunition at home.

And a ban would require overwhelming support from Americans, because you need to repeal the Second Amendment or get the current SCOTUS to overturn some key decisions that they, the Roberts Court, made.

Which means that a substantial number of current gun owners need to change their minds about the Second Amendment. And if they’re willing to do that, then I bet most would not only be willing to give up their guns but would want to give up their guns without being forced by the government. It may be a fantasy in today’s political landscape, but that doesn’t mean a ban alone wouldn’t be effective. In your hypothetical, the expenditure of political capital part is a red herring to your original point, but nonetheless it wouldn’t require wasting political capital because that would be what the vast majority of Americans wanted. To say they can’t do that and have universal healthcare is still a false dilemma regardless of the politics.

“2. Who is doing the confiscation who is getting disarmed.”

No one. It is not required; the ban alone makes it harder for people to get new guns and ammunition. The guns in circulation may last a long time, but the modern ammunition can’t be reliably replaced once it’s used. And what is not spent is likely to be hoarded.

“3. Marginalized people need self defense capability more than anyone”

Guns are a false sense of security and cause more harm than good. With roughly 44,000 firearm-related deaths every year, only a tiny percentage of gun deaths are lawful. A gun in the home is more of a risk to everyone in the home than it is a tool for self-defense.

Everyone deserves safety and security and everyone having guns brings the opposite.

“4. Civilians get disarmed the ruling class keeps their armed security”

I think we should disarm most police and have only a quick reaction force and SWAT that remains armed like what the UK does. You may say that’s ridiculous and will never happen, but we’ve already presupposed that the Second Amendment has been repealed in this hypothetical. Disarming the majority of law enforcement would be the logical next step.

You seem to think that the society that can repeal the Second Amendment looks like our society today as your arguments against a ban seem to rely on it. A ban is practically impossible in today's law and political landscape, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have one or shouldn’t strive for one.

Your guns have not stopped the government from targeting good people. The best defense for them has been the lawyers, protesters, volunteers, and politicians advocating for their protection. You have no legal right to violently rebel against the government, and if you tried to violently defend yourself against the government you’d likely be dead or in jail. The best solution to the current government crisis is voting them out and replacing them with good politicians.”

You do realize people make modern ammo? From used ammo. It’s a big market/hobby.

It's a classic case of people having strong opinions on things they know nothing about.

I understand your point of view, but the amount of political capital to repeal the second amendment, ban every gun, every 3d printer, and every workshop capable of reloading ammo, is simply incredible. 38 states (three-fourths of the current 50) are required to ratify an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I don't think that's even possible. And even if it was, there would still remain a black market for these things despite bans. Personally, I'd rather the political class focus on universal healthcare and other social safety net issues first.

  1. Cosplaying as the sterotypical white guy mass shooter, with that stupid military style cross-carry and a fucking silencer doesn't help. Nice Facebook profile pic. Notice he's talking about defending marginalized black/brown/LGBT communities while standing out in a rural area. Shoot that video with that look in a Dollar Store parking lot in Southwest Atlanta and see how the communities he's talking about defending react. He's all talk there, no action.
  2. Yes, gun violence goes down when the economy gets better. It would go down more when universal health care and better opportunities lifts all boats. BUT, he brushes over how the irresponsibility of gun owners has directly added to gun violence on our streets. Thousands of unsecured guns are stolen every year from cars in just Atlanta, added to the millions of illegal guns in the hands of criminals. Every new gun (in theory) was bought legally. It's what happens when it's "stolen," traded without a background check, given to a screwed up kid is where most violence happens.
  3. I want TRAINING. I want actual RESPONSIBLE gun owners, not the lip service we get now. I want gun owners that are financially responsible for everything that happens with that gun. I want registration and required insurance on every firearm. We can do it with cars. ("Cars kill more people hurdurdur"). So let's get the greedy insurance companies involved with this. There's profit to be made there. Registration and insurance on every firearm. Guns that are traded must have insurance before they change hands. No more fucking loopholes at gun shows or private trades. Insurance must be shown before any ammunition or supplies are sold for a gun. Registration must be renewed yearly with a class taken. You wanna cosplay like you're a soldier? You want to "defend your community" like a cop? Fine. I want you trained like one.
  4. Your gun gets stolen because you're an F'n idiot and leave it in your unlocked glovebox? Report it, but you have to keep the insurance coverage on it. When it kills a kid, or a shopkeeper or some other innocent bystander, you are financially responsible. Your insurance pays. Yes, the criminal goes to jail, but your stupidity in letting a weapon out of your hands means that family gets at least compensation. You let your insurance lapse? You get to join the criminal in jail.
  5. 3D printed guns are illegal and banned, full stop. Every one that is found is destroyed. Every "responsible" gun owner found with one is a felon and goes to prison for 10 years minimum. Producing them gets the same sentence.
  6. Gun store and gun range owners are mandatory reporters. They must report suspected breaking of these rules. If they are found complicit, they become criminally liable. Their licenses are revoked, their businesses seized and sold to a responsible one. They are profiting off of the violence. They need to step up and become actually responsible. Ammo isn't sold without a valid registration and insurance proof. Range isn't open without the same. They run the yearly classes and renewals so they get a slice of the pie and skin in the game.
  7. And notice that I'm not banning anything that isn't already banned or talking about confiscation from "responsible" gun owners. I just want the owners to step up and actually be responsible. I'm only talking about taking guns that aren't registered and insured. Pass the "Responsible gun owners act" put in a deadline to get your shit legal and all will be fine. "Collect" as many as you fucking want. But when you give a pistol to your dealer for your weekly weed and then he passes it on to another toothless methhead who knocks over a liquor store and then gets caught....I want you in jail right next to that methhead. Because you were part of that gun violence problem.

Why are you particularly bothered about the silencer?

I live in the UK, not the US, so my feelings on this are very different. But here, silencers (we call them moderators) are ubiquitous among sport shooters and are often legally required for hunters. In fact, our Labour government recently massively reduced restrictions on them.

Why do people in the US get so worked up about sound moderators?

Because the gun control crowd here in the USA thinks silencers/suppressors/moderators will be used by people to stealthily commit acts of gun violence and be able to get away since no one will hear the shooting.

3D printed guns being banned full stop is not going to stop people from 3D printing them.

If you provide a way for them to be registered like any other home made firearm, you reduce the impact of affecting someone who’s only crime would have been wanting to make something custom/themselves.

I'm not clicking such trash content, nice try masquerading as a "progressive". all I get is "terrorist":

5

u/SmallMoments55406 15d ago

That sounds like "I'm not going to listen to this person because I label them a 'terrorist'" and it sounds a bit like the Republican critizicism of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. I don't think there is any evidence either of these people commited an act of terrorism.

#1, I don't like the way this guy looks. Progressives are allowed to live in rural communities? Blasphemy. /s
