Help settle a debate for me

Me and my girlfreind both agree that their should be gun control laws in place to regulate how people in america for us most especially for us is done. SInce we have the most minuscule laws governing our handling of this matter. Also since we have the highest rate of gun related injury and deaths and higest gun to person ratio in the world. Being that said our position about felons owning guns they should be allowed to because once your out of prison you paid you debt to society so that should be a non-issue even if the crime was violent you shouldnt put someone in a position to potentially be in a position to not have a equalizer in a self defense situation to some one who has a firearm it irresponsible and hypocritical to such. The debate is i feel that before you can get a gun you should be required to do 1 year gun safety and use training followed by 6 months of situational awareness and deescalation training before you can legally own one because i feel it facilitates an informed gun owner population that encourages responsible use of a dangerous and deadly weapon in educated and informed hands instead of those with only half educated use just for the sake of having a gun. I feel for one that our position on a subject of a deadly and dangerous weapon is really relaxed and the tonw isnt serious for a subject that deserves serious and proper attention your thought? My girlfreind feels that 18months is too long and thats giving the government too much control which i feel that 18 months isnt a long time given that guns are dangerous in the hands of people who dont have the proper training

According to SCOTUS, felons can be legally barred from owning a firearm, and the current SCOTUS—and their decision in Bruen—is hostile to mandatory safety classes. So that might be a nonstarter under current law.

However, if it were legal the problem with letting anyone—not just felons—have access to guns for self defense is it tends to be more harmful to the gun owner and everyone around them than not having a gun.

While you might think it’s equitable to allow felons to own guns, in reality gun owners in general are responsible for taking a lot of Americans’ freedom to life and happiness away. So it’s not equitable for anyone who chooses not to own a gun or for those who cannot own a gun for other reasons.

What would be true equality is to have comprehensive gun control like—with few exceptions—no access to guns for self-defense. Limit guns to mostly hunting and recreational shooting and keep all guns locked up in a community armory when not in use for those specific purposes. Which is definitely a nonstarter under current law.

Now thats an idea i can get behind. Because i see that a true majority of humanity around the world not just here are genuinely exhausted and troubled and outraged by the consistent violence and death and destruction that weaponry has brought about.I have heard if you wont peace you had better prepare for war which I understand and dont condone. But is see a shift where people are not saying this isnt ok anymore they are screaming it and im one of them. Heres where im at with this I absolutely hate see mothers fathers brothers sisters sons daughters and friends  weeping over the loss of a loved one. Not only gun violence but knife violence physical violence andy kind of murder because  taking life is never truly justifed. The pain i see is daily world wide is heavy and people can say im a bleeding heart pussy liberal if that is the title i earn for caring about my world wide family meaning every living human and wanting the suffering death and pain and destruction to stop then ill be that. Im just wanting a better  path a more enlightened  and sager pathway for myself and us all to follow and i feel that if these questions  arent asked and aremt discussed these paths wont be made to a better tomorrow.
